Discourse Analysis Assignment

I. The Text

The dialogue took place at coffee shop near my house at 4 o’clock in the afternoon. It happened a day
before football match between Indonesian Team and Thailand Team which took place in Jakarta,
Indonesia.

We used to gather and have a chat in the coffee shop in the afternoon. There are four people in the
coffee shop that evening, they are X, Y, Z, and me. X is a civil servant in a government office in Nganjuk.
He is a senior high school graduate. Y is a student of a private college in Kediri. Z is the coffee seller.

That afternoon, we gathered there and had a chat while waiting for the coffee. After a while, X
borrowed Y’s new cell phone. The dialogue below took place after X borrowed the phone and was trying
to operate it.

.........

X : Iki ana satus. Pur separo wani?

Y : Pur endi?

X : Iki piye?

Y : Tombol sing tengen.

X : Indonesia.

Y : Yo .. panggah … gak wani.

Z : Sik .. maine neng endi?

X : Neng Indonesia.

Y : Lek maine neng Jakarta, yo .. panggah … kalah. Nek maine neng Watudandang lagi

Indonesia menang.

X : Lek iyo, duwite wis kumpul iki. Engko sore jupuken neng Wak Jo.

II. The Analysis

The conversation above is an example of informal communication. The speakers have known each other
and bond very well. Therefore, although X actually is older than Y and X is also a respected person in the
area (a civil servant is considered as a respected member of society in this country) but Y didn’t use basa
kromo in that conversation.

The first utterance of X above (“Iki ana satus. Pur separo wani?”) is also evidence that they bond to each
other very well. The utterance actually is an ellipsis of a very long utterance. If they don’t share the same
understanding of the background of the utterance, it will be impossible for Y to understand the
utterance. The utterance actually means: Our ‘gang’ will have a bet on the football match between
Indonesian team and Thailand team. We have already collected a hundred thousand rupiahs. You will
get a hundred thousand if you win, but you will only have to pay fifty thousand rupiahs if you lose. Do
you dare to answer the bet challenge?

Y : Pur endi?

The utterance above means that Y is ready to answer the challenge. He is gathering some information
before he states his agreement or disagreement concerning the circumstances of the bet.

X : Iki piye?

Y : Tombol sing tengen.

The adjacency pair above is a side sequence within the conversation. The topic of the whole
conversation above is about the bet upon the football match. While in the quotation, X and Y are talking
about the operation of the cell phone.

X : Indonesia.
It means that they believe Indonesian team will lose the game.

Y : Yo .. panggah … gak wani.

There are two pauses in this utterance. These pauses are the ‘vehicle’ for Y to make a joke in that
atmosphere. Y’s utterance means: “Alright … of course …” After the second pause, normally people will
conclude that Y will take the bet, but in this utterance he said, “No deal!”

Z : Sik .. maine neng endi?

Z was ignoring Y’s joke and continued digging up the detail information about the bet. It doesn’t mean
that he disrespected Y. It even means that Z understands perfectly about the nature of the joke type.

X : Neng Indonesia.

Y : Lek maine neng Jakarta, yo .. panggah … kalah. Nek maine neng Watudandang lagi

Indonesia menang.

Y is making joke again by playing another two pauses within his utterance. He even added some more
joke behind his previous utterance. “Nek maine neng Watudandang lagi Indonesia menang.” The
utterance becomes a joke because all speakers in the dialogue share the same background knowledge
about these hypotheses:

 Wherever the game played Indonesian team will still lose the game.

 The Indonesian team’s supporters from Watudandang district are fanatics and have tendency

to become hooligans.

 Indonesian team will still lose the game although it has very fanatic supporters who are ready

to play rough.

X : Lek iyo, duwite wis kumpul iki. Engko sore jupuken neng Wak Jo.
X is sure that Y will ignore all the hypotheses above and will take the bet. X’s last sentence gives us clear
evidence that X knows Y well and X is sure that he will answer the challenge.
