HOW DOES TOURISM AFFECT DEVELOPING COUNTRIES
How does tourism affect developing countries?

Tourism has become one of the main sources of socio-economic activity in developing

counties. Most countries are currently relying on tourism. This is due to the great advantages

drawn from tourism (Jenkins, C. L., & Henry, B. M., 2012).. But despite the advantage, there lie

some disadvantages that are associated with tourism as well. Therefore, here are some of the

impacts of tourism on developing countries.

Firstly, tourism create about one tenth word’s source of employment (Mill, 2007). There

are many who have been employed to work in tourist attraction areas. There are guards who

ensure that the areas are safe for the animals as well as for the tourists to visit, there are

attendants who ensure that the tourists get the best services they need as well as educators who

help tourists understand different phenomenon in the sites.

Also, tourism acts as the source of government revenues. The charges at the tourism areas

are always paid as revenues to the government. This acts as main source of funds for the

government (Gössling, S., 2017).. Also, those employed in the tourism sites are taxed to create

revenues. It’s approximated that tourism creates 10 percent of the world’s revenue. This has

really helped in development. The revenue from foreigners acts as major source of foreign trade

(Pleunaron, 1999). This is a great tool in ensuring a balanced foreign trade (Britton, 1982).

In addition, tourism acts as a tool for international unity. It brings countries together and

hence can help a developing country have better foreign relations. This ensures that better

developments are made in the host country. This creates an environment for peace and harmony

between different nations.

But there are some other negative effects of tourism as well (Sasidharan, V., Sirakaya, E.,

& Kerstetter, D., 2016). It may lead to inflation. Prices of some goods may be increased to meet

the demands hence inflation in the county. Also, it’s a source of social evil. It brings some social

problems due to interaction with different cultures (Britton, 1982).
