As a field of practice, it has


some aspects in common with other fields of management, such as publici administration, hospital
administration and business management.

Concept of Management

The concept of management has been used in Functional; Human relations; leadership and Decision
making; productivity and integration sciences.

Different authors on management have defined the term management according to differernt concept.
Classified on the basis of their concept, following are the important definition of management.

1. Functional concept: according to this concept, management is what manager does.

Louis Allen: Management is what a manager does.

James, L. Lundy: Management is principally the task of planning, coordinating, motivation and
controlling the efforts of others towards a specific objectives. Management is the task of planning,
executing and controlling.

Henry Fayol: To manage is to forecast, and plan, to organize, command, to coordinate and to control.

2. Human Relations Concept Human being as input: According to this concept Management is an art of
getting things done through other.

J. D. Mooney and A. C. Ralley: Management is the art of directing and inspiring people.

Lawrence A. Appley: Management is the development of people and not the direction of things.
Management is personal administration. Management is the art of getting things done through the
efforts of other people.

S. George: Management consists of getting things done through others. Manager is one who
accomplishes the objectives by directing the efforts of others.

3. Leadership and Decision-making: According to this concept, Management is an art and science of
Decision-making and leadership.
Donald J. Clough: Management is the art and science of Decision-making and leadership.

Ralph, C. Davis: Management is the foundation of executive leadership anywhere.

Ross Moore: Management means Decision-making.

4.Productivity concept process and product input: According to this concept, Management is an art of
increasing productivity.

John, F. Mee: Management maybe defined as the art of securing maximum prosperity with a minimum
of effort so as to secure maximum prosperity and happiness for both employer and employee and give
the public the best possible service.

F. W. Taylor: Management is the art of knowing what you want to do in the best and cheapest way.

5. Integration concept: According to this concept, Management is the coordinator of human and
material resources.

Kelth and Gubellinl: Management is the force that integrates men and physical plant into an effective
operating unit.

Barry M. Richman: Management entails the coordination of human and material resources towards the
achievement of organizational objectives.

Robert, L. Trewatha and M. Gene Newport: Management is coordination of the human and material
resources essential in the effective and efficient attainment of objectives.
