2.1. General Description of eMotionUSB
The eMotionUSB is an advanced TFT-LCD-Controller board to connect video- and power-source and control
signals over a single 24pin USB type-C connector.
For operating as LCD controller the eMotionUSB has to be connected to a power- and video-source by a full
featured USB type-C cable (EMCA). The power- and video-source has to deliver displayport-video over
alternate mode. Control of the eMotionUSB can be done by the integrated USB2.0 channel.
Optional a keyboard with IR-receiver can be connected to the eMotionUSB for controlling.

The eMotionUSB can drive a TFT and the LEDs. It has an onboard buzzer, a keyboard for controlling the
OSD and a speaker can be connected. An USB 2.0 device can be connected at the connector panel. A
touch panel which is mounted on the TFT and which has an USB-interface can also be connected to the
eMotionUSB.
All active components of the monitor are supplied by VBUS over the USB-Type-C cable.
The current over the USB-Type-C cable (i.e. I_VBUS) is limited to 3A by the emotionUSB.
Therefore the power consumption of all active components should be counted together.
That means:
- Power consumption of TCON-Board of TFT
- Power consumption of LED-driver of TFT
- Power consumption of touch-controller
- Power consumption of onboard buzzer (if used in the monitor)
- Power consumption of speaker (if used in the monitor)
- Power consumption of external USB2.0 device (if it can be used in the application)
- Power consumption of eMotionUSB itself (approx. 1W)
The following table shows the max. power for the several input voltages which can be used to drive a
monitor.
Additionally an approximately monitor size for every voltage is given (this size can differ depending on the
used active components)
Max. VBUS delivered by Max. current on VBUS Max. Power for all compo- Max monitor size

+5V 3A 12W ~ 6”
+12V 3A 25W ~15”
+20V 3A 35W ~ 21”
Note: in the table there are only the standard voltages for VBUS (i.e. +5V, +12V and +20V) shown. If the
signal and power source can deliver a different voltage in the range +5V … +20V the calculation has to be
done separately. Please see chapter 5 for more details for this calculation.

5.1. Power Supply Voltage over VBUS

At startup of this system Source – EMCA – eMotionUSB the power-source delivers +5V on VBUS. That
means the eMotionUSB is supplied by +5V first. The maximum input current for eMotionUSB is 3A@5V. This
value is defined by Ra on CC-line which is configured by CCG3 firmware.
V-LEDs
At startup the ramp-switch is open and only the USB-PD-Controller is supplied. According to the USB-Type-
C specification the USB-PD-controller negotiate with the power source the amount of power which is
necessary for the monitor. If the power-source can deliver this amount of power it will apply it at X500. When
+VBUS is stable with the new value the power-source sends a message to the USB-PD-controller. After
receiving this message the USB-PD-controller will close the ramp-switch and the monitor will go into normal
operation mode. The ramp-switch is limiting the rise-time for the input voltage and thereby also limiting the
inrush current on +VBUS.
The range for +VBUS in normal operation mode which can be delivered by the power-source is from +5V to
+20V (according to USB-Type-C specification). That means that +VBUS for normal operation mode can be
only +5V or +12V.
It is not sure that every power-source can deliver the necessary amount of power which is needed by the
monitor! In this case the eMotionUSB will not go into normal operation mode.
As shown in the image above one output of the eMotionUSB has to supply the LEDs of the connected TFT.
These LEDs normally need a +12V supply voltage. As mentioned before there are power-sources which can
only supply +5V on +VBUS. On the other hand there will be power-sources which can deliver +20V on
+VBUS.
To cover the fact that +12V are needed at the output with an input voltage range from +5V to +20V a
buck/boost-converter is implemented on the eMotionUSB. This converter delivers +12V at its output if a
voltage within the range of +5V to +20V is supplied to its input.
From this +12V the other voltages which are needed for the eMotionUSB in normal operation mode are
generated by step-down converters, additionally the +12V will be used to supply the LED-inverter.
Note: for all the maximum current values (I_V-TCON, I_V-LED, I_USB2.0) in the following chapters the total
power amount of the monitor has to be considered.
5.4. Panel Supply Voltage V-TCON
The panel supply voltage is generated from the +12V voltage on the buck/boost-converter. The eMotionUSB
can generate 3.3V, 5.0V panel supply voltage (12V as panel supply voltage is not available!). The panel
supply voltage can be selected by firmware of eMotionUSB. The max current is limited to 2.0A.

6. OSD (On Screen Display) / Optional Control
The eMotionUSB can operate with an external OSD board (optional item).
Generally the OSD offers the user various possibilities of customizing the appearance of the TFT display. By
using the OSD board, brightness, contrast, input selection, OSD appearance and much more can be
adjusted easily.
The eMotionUSB supports a 5 button OSD. Other customized OSDs (4button/6button) may be realized upon
request.
