No China, Yes India – Apple to start manufacturing of Iphone 11 in Chennai

Historically, Apple’s former device models such as iPhone SE (Gen 1) and iPhone XR have been manufactured and
assembled in India. It is for the first time that Apple’s top-of-the-line model is to be manufactured domestically.

iPhone 11 which is the brand’s flagship device is being now manufactured by Foxconn at its Chennai plant. This
marks an achievement for the Government’s Aatamnirbhar India initiative.

Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal announced this news on Friday, 24 th July. Goyal wrote,” significant boost to Make
in India! Apple has started manufacturing iPhone 11 in India, bringing a top-of-the-line model for the first time in the
country."

Additionally, Apple has plans of making iPhone SE 2020 (latest addition to Apple’s mobile device range) in India in its
Wistron plant near Bangalore.

What’s in it for Indian economy?

Foxconn, the leading supplier for Apple has planned to invest $1 billion to expand its operations in India. Also,
Pegatron – the second largest iPhone assembler – too is having investment plans in India for setting up a local
subsidiary in future.

This move indicates the shift of global manufacturers’ choice from China to India which can potentially benefit both
the Indian consumers (in terms of expected economical prices) and influx of new job opportunities in the country.
