User’s guide
Authorised usage and intended usage
The TP8705 is a PMR-band hand-portable two-way radio. This radio must not be used unless you have a valid licence
for the use of the radio in your country. Usage of the radio may be limited under the terms of your licence to a limited
geographical area. Possession of the radio may not be authorised in your country unless you have a valid licence. The
radio must only be used on the frequencies for which it is licensed.
The radio has been approved for use in most European countries. Other countries in which the radio has been approved
may be listed below. Certificates of compliance can be found at the end of this guide.
The radio is intended to be used for voice and / or data communication in the relevant PMR band. It is not intended to
be used in an environment where the presence of vapour, dust or other substances constitutes an explosion risk.

Driving
Use of the radio normally requires one free hand. It can be dangerous to drive while operating the radio, since only one
hand is then available to control the vehicle, and operating the radio controls or looking at the radio display may distract
you. You should not operate the radio while driving, unless a hands-free control unit is used. You may chose to leave
the radio powered on while driving, either using an external antenna (recommended) or the rubber antenna supplied
with the radio. If you drive with the radio switched on, you should pull in and come to a halt before replying to a call or
making a call. Local regulations in your area may prohibit the use of a two-way radio in a vehicle or while driving.
Operating environment
Battery care
The battery must be handled with care. It must never be disposed of in a fire or in municipal waste. The battery can
explode if placed in a fire, or if the battery terminals (the metal studs at the bottom and at the back of the battery) are
short-circuited. Do not allow any metallic object to touch two or more of the battery contacts at the same time. Apart
from the risk of explosion, short-circuiting will destroy the battery. Do not attempt to charge the battery in any charger
other the chargers designed for the TP8000 series. See the section on battery charging and maintenance.

Tuning procedure
Requirements
• RF test set, or rf signal generator, frequency counter, and dummy load
• Test box for TP8000, test jig and jumper flat cable
• Core trimming tool
• DC voltmeter with offset / non-linear response, to measure 1.2 – 2.0 V (for RSSI measurement)
Test conditions
• Start RF level from generator 2μV EMF
• Radio set-up for 5W power level on test channels.
• Radio programmed with either the final customer frequencies or the default frequencies. Radios can be
programmed with the default test frequencies from the keypad (existing user settings and frequencies will be
deleted!) To do so, turn on the radio while holding the and buttons. When “Select VHF UHF” appears in
the display, release the on/off button , followed by the and the button. Then select UHF (3). The default
profile will take a few seconds to load. The default test frequencies are as follows:
1. Low limit frequency = 400.100 MHz
2. Mid-band frequency = 435.100 MHz
3. Upper limit frequency = 469.900 MHz
Adjustment
1. Set channel to mid-band frequency. Adjust RX VCO (L13) for 2V at test point.
2. Key the transmitter (PTT switch or TX switch on testbox). Adjust TX VCO (L23) for 2V at test point.
3. Select the highest channel programmed (Channel 3 if using the default test frequencies). Key the
transmitter and adjust for correct frequency with P1 and correct power level (5W) with P2. Monitor
current consumption. If it exceeds 2A, reduce the transmitter power level until maximum current drain is
2A on any channel selected while sending at maximum power level.
4. Check that output power remains constant (within 2dB) and that TX VCO voltage is 1.5 – 3.5V on lower
and upper limit channels.
5. Adjust RX LO (L16) for max. DC voltage on test point (normally between 0.3 and 0.5V). It may be
neccessary to remove the brass core completely.
6. Adjust L1, L2, L5 and L6 for max. RSSI voltage (between 1.2 and 1.5V) at RSSI measuring point on test
jig.
7. Adjust L9 for max. AF output at AF output measuring point on test box.
8. Check that sensitivity is normal and that the RX VCO voltage is between 1.5 and 4V on upper and lower
limit channels.

Version 1.01
7. Logic board, version TP281i
Description
General
The Tp281i board contains the logic, audio, display, keyboard, infrared port and power supply circuits of the TP8000
hand portable radio
Power Supply
The 7.2V line comes from the battery via the RF board. When the on/off button is pressed (initial radio state = OFF),
the gate of MOSFET Q1 is pulled low via D5, turning on Q1, which supplies 3 separate 7V rails via D13, D15 and D16.
At the same time, the base of Q10 is pulled low and Q10 switches on, delivering a high to pin 8 of IC2, the inverted
shutdown (SHDN) input of the switched converter. The LTC1174-3.3 device used in this position retains high
efficiency over the full range of output current demand. IC2 starts up and provides 3.3V to most of the logic circuitry,
including the PIC microcontroller IC7, which carries out the start-up sequences. The 3.3V supply is also used by the
analogue circuitry on the radio board. Pin 2 of IC7 goes high at the end of the initial start sequence, turning on Q5a,
which holds the gate of Q1 low thus maintaining Q1 in the ON state. The initial start sequence lasts 200ms, so if the
on/off button is pressed for less than 200ms, the radio will not turn on. When Q5a or Q5b is switched on, the base of
Q10 is held low, maintaining a high at the inverted shutdown input of IC2, keeping the converter active. When the full
start-up sequence is completed, pin 34 of the main processor IC12 goes high, turning on Q5b and holding the gate of Q1
and the base of Q10 low, maintaining the 3.3V and the derived supplies, thus keeping the radio in the ON state. A 12V
supply is derived from the 3.3V supply by DC – DC converter IC1. IC1 is active only when pin 10 of IC7 goes high
during a boot start. It provides a 12V source to the main processor IC, IC12. This 12V input is used to “burn” the
internal flash ROM during a boot start, under control of IC7, the PIC processor. IC10 provides a precision 3.3V
reference, derived from the +7Vfilt rail, to the main processor. The reference is used by the 2 on-chip D-A converters,
which provide band-tuning voltages for the radio. IC4 holds the reset input of the PIC processor high on start-up until
the 3.3V supply stabilises. It also resets the PIC controller, causing a reboot of the radio, if there is a fault on the 3.3V
rail. IC24 provides a regulated 5Vsupply, derived from the +7Vfilt rail. IC25 is a DC – DC converter which converts
the 5V from IC24 to +10V, used by the band-tuning op-amps IC8a and IC8b.
PIC
IC7, a PIC 16V505, is a low-power 8-bit microcontroller with an internal 4MHz oscillator. It has 1K x 12 bit of internal
program memory (EPROM) and 72 bytes of RAM. It is a one-time programmable (OTP) device. It executes the start-up
sequence, which has 2 variants:
1. Normal start.
The reset line (/RESET) to the CPU is released. The PIC then waits 200ms while the CPU initialises. On
completion, the logic part of the TP8000 radio is ready for normal radio operation (the additional time required
for the radio to actually become operational depends on the PLL lock time etc). If the start up sequence is not
executed correctly, boot mode will be entered automatically.
2. Boot mode.
Boot mode is used to update the radio software. If pin 11 at J1 is pulled low, pin 3 of IC7 follows low. Boot
mode can also be entered from the radio menu. In this case, pin 3 of IC7 is driven low. IC7 generates a bit rate
clock, which goes from pin of IC7 to pin 4 of retriggerable monostable IC27C. Pin 2 of IC7 goes high, turning
on the 12V DC-DC converter and illuminating the blue LED. Then pin 12 pulses high, flashing the red LED. Pin
12 strobes with incoming IrDa RxD data. Pin 10 of IC7 goes high, supplying 12V to pins 10 and 75 of the CPU,
enabling writing to the flash PROM. Pin 8 of IC7 also goes low, resetting both the CPU (pin 63) and the display
driver IC23 (pin 16). At the end of the write operation, the /UM output of the CPU goes steady-state high (pin 13
IC7) and the PIC controller returns to normal operation.
24
CPU
IC12 is a H8/3048F microcontroller. It integrates system supporting functions with a H8/300H CPU core.
It has a 32-bit internal architecture with sixteen 16-bit general registers. The on-chip supporting functions include 128
Kbytes of flash ROM, 4 Kbytes of static RAM, a 16-bit integrated timer unit (ITU), a programmable timing pattern
controller (TPC), a watchdog timer (WDT), a serial communication interface (SCI), an A/D converter, a D/A converter,
I/O ports, a direct memory access controller (DMAC), and a refresh controller. The microcontroller communicates via
serial ports with the IrDa device and with the rf board via radio bus. Serial communication is also carried out via the
GMSK bus to an optional digital audio board, via the C bus to audio processing devices, via the I2C bus to the keypad
encoder, the clock and to the squelch threshold-setting device. There is a serial interface between IC12 and the display
driver IC23.
• RX PLL lock
• TX PLL lock
• TX power output
• Battery state
• Internal / External handset status
• Key
• PTT 2
• Tone key
• Interupt from keypad
• Temperature sensor
• Battery voltage

In addition to the data ports, the controller has the following bi-state outputs:
• On
• Battery test
• End user mode
• TX power level (3-bit output)
• External / Internal microphone switch
• External / Internal loudspeaker switch
• Beep output
• Red LED
• Blue LED
• Squelch switch
• Backlight
The program code in the internal flash PROM is divided into two operational areas: the main operating program and the
boot program. Bootmode is entered via the keyboard (password protected), or by shorting pin 17 of J1 to ground. New
program code can then be loaded via the IrDa link.
EEPROM
IC6 is a 64 kByte EEPROM. It stores the user-configurable parameters, such as channel names, frequencies, Tx power
levels, timer values, tone system, tone sequences, etc. Communication between the EEPROM and IC12 is via the I2C
bus.

Technical Manual TP8000 type 8705
Version 1.01
25
Keypad encoder
IC5 is an 8-bit I/O expander for I2C bus applications. Here the ports are only used as inputs. The keypad consists of 21
keys, each of which has 2 independent pull-to-ground switches. The switches are isolated by diodes. Note that the array
is not a simple 4X4 matrix; although 16 keys ground one row and one column each, the remaining 5 keys pull down 2
rows or 2 columns. Each time a key is pressed, an interrupt is sent and a byte is sent on the I2C bus to the main
controller. If 2 or more keys are pressed at the same time, the binary value of the byte sent to the controller does not
correspond to a valid entry in the look-up table, and the controller ignores the input.
Temperature sensor
IC22 is a temperature sensor. The output is +10mV/°C, and the device has a lower measuring limit of -30°C. The
temperature measurement can be used by the radio software to offset temperature drift in various areas, such as squelch
detector output level. If enabled by the radio software/setup, the internal temperature can also be shown in the display.
IrDa
IC3 is an infrared communication IC. Unlike the IrDa used in the earlier versions of the board, the HSDL3201 does not
process/condition the pulse streams on the RxD and TxD lines. An external pulse stretching and shaping circuit is used
on the RxD line, retriggerable monostable IC16B. The time constant of the monostable is switchable between 9600 and
19200 bps with IC27B. On the TxD side, a bit rate clock must be generated. This is done by IC7 in boot mode (output
on pin 6), or by IC12 (output BR_SM on pin 71) in normal mode. The TxD bitstream is shaped and clocked by
retriggerable monostable IC16A and IC27C, with the monostable time constant switchable by IC27D.
Band-tuning amplifiers
IC8a and IC8b are the Tx and Rx band-tuning amplifiers respectively. They increase the range of the band-tuning
output of the internal D-A converters in IC12 from 0 – 3.3V to 0 – 10V. C13 and C14 provide filtering to minimise h.f.
noise on the RX_BAND and TX_BAND lines.
Clock
IC9 is a micropower clock IC. The clock is powered via R23 when the radio is turned off. Capacitor C20 allows the
clock to continue to run during battery change. The alarm function of the clock IC sends an interrupt via pin 3 to wake
up the microcontroller. If enabled/setup in radio software, the time can also be displayed in the display.
Squelch circuit
IC13b amplifies the high frequency component of the detector audio (AF). A DC level corresponding to the level of hf
noise is produced by D8, D9 and associated components. IC26 is a 10-bit D-A converter, which converts a binary
string sent by IC12 over the I2C bus into a variable DC current. The variable voltage drop across load resistor R83 is the
reference at the inverting input of comparator IC13a. When the level of hf noise detected falls below the threshold set
by IC26, pin 89 of IC12 is pulled low.

Microphone amplifier
IC17b and IC11a forms the preamplifier for the internal Microphone and IC11b is the preamp for the ext. Microphone.
The Microphone gain may be set by IC21 and IC28 via the Radio menu. IC16 is a limiter securing that the max.
deviation is limited before entering the audio processor. The pre-emphasis for the Tx voice audio is incorporated in IC
17b. Microphone switching is controlled by IC12. A high on pin 37 enables the internal microphone. A high on pin 36
enables the external microphone.
Ampilfier IC17a is delivering the “beep” tones from IC12 to the speaker amplifier.
Rx voice pre-amplifier
IC15a de-emphasises the Rx voice audio.
Loudspeaker amplifiers
In all standby/mute/Tx modes, the loudspeaker amplifiers run in a power-saving mode, with low current drain. The
microcontroller enables one or both of the loudspeaker amplifiers when a ring signal is produced or when radio audio
should be heard from the loudspeaker. Pin 38 of IC12 goes high to enable the internal loudspeaker amplifier and/or pin
39 goes high to enable the external loudspeaker amplifier via Q14b and Q14a respectively. IC20 is the amplifier for the
internal speaker. IC18 is the external speaker amplifier. Both amplifiers are used in a bridge configuration to provide
maximum output level. Depending on the radio software version and radio settings, the selection of internal/external
loudspeaker (and microphone) may be controlled by level at pin 3 of IC12 (EXT line on logic board, BOOT/AL line on
radio board).
Vibrator circuit
The radio can be configured for a “silent” call. In this configuration the loudspeaker remains muted when the radio
receives a call. The vibrator motor M1 causes the radio to vibrate, alerting the bearer of the radio of an incoming call.
A pulse train is at pin 51, IC12 switches Q11 to drive the vibrator motor.
Backlight
A high at pin 2, IC12 switches on Q13, biasing Q12 and Q8 on, and illuminating the LED backlight array.
Display
Display driver IC23 drives the dot matrix display LCD1. Data is transferred serially from IC12 to IC23. The display
driver has a built in supply voltage regulator with a temperature co-efficient which matches that of the display to
provide maximum display contrast over a wide variety of operating temperatures.

General
The TP391b board contains all the radio-frequency circuits of the TP8705 hand portable radio
Power Supply
The 7.2V battery feeds the board direct via two studs mounted on the underside of the board. The battery is internally
fused. The 7.2Vsupply exits the board via fuse F1 and pin 10 of J1 to supply the logic board. Most of the r.f. circuitry is
fed from the 3.3V line supplied from the logic board via pin 13 on J1. There are two 5V regulators, IC7, which supplies
the TXVCO, and IC4, which supplies the RXVCO. IC7 is active only in TX (KEY) mode.
Reference oscillator
X02 is the temperature-controlled reference oscillator. The 14.85 MHz output at pin 3 feeds both the Rx PLL (IC5) and
the Tx PLL (IC8) at pin 8. After 2 stages of band-pass filtering, the third harmonic supplies the 44.55 MHz second local
oscillator input to pin4, IC3. A REF_MOD input (pin 17 of J1) is provided for optional low-frequency TX modulation
applications
Rx PLL
The RX_BAND tuning voltage rough-tunes the VCO to the approximate operating frequency, by altering the reverse-
bias on varactor diodes D10 and D11. The VCO buffer Q4 feeds Fo to pin 6 of the PLL IC, IC5. The control voltage
output is on pin 2. This signal fine-tunes the oscillator to hold it on frequency and in phase-lock with the reference
oscillator. An additional stage of buffering and gain is provided by IC6, followed by a tuned band-pass filter, before the
signal is fed to the balanced mixer, IC2.
On radio start-up, the main processor loads the Rx channel information serially to the PLL via the RX_DATA line (pin
12, IC5). If the Rx PLL loses or fails to achieve lock, pin 14, the LD output of IC5 goes low, turning on Q3 and pulling
the RX_UNLOCK line high.
Tx PLL
The Tx PLL can be configured to run in both Tx and Rx modes or in Tx mode only. This is under software control. The
TX_BAND tuning voltage rough-tunes the VCO to the approximate operating frequency, by altering the reverse-bias
on varactor diodes D15 and D16. The VCO buffer Q15 feeds Fo to pin 6 of the PLL IC, IC8. The control voltage output

is on pin 2. This signal fine-tunes the oscillator to hold it on frequency and in phase-lock with the reference oscillator.
The TX_MOD line modulates the VCO by superimposing a lo-level af voltage on the control bias to D14.
In normal operation, the time constant of the PLL, determined by R79, C107 and C108, and by variable internal
configuration of the dividers in the PLL IC, is long to enable low frequency / data modulation.
On radio start-up, the main processor loads the Tx channel information serially to the PLL via TX_DATA line (pin 12,
IC5). When both inputs of the OR gate IC9 are low, the output is low, turning on Q11 and Q13 and powering the driver
and output stages. In Tx KEY mode, the /KEY line is low. If the Tx PLL loses or fails to achieve lock, pin 14, the LD
output of IC5 goes low, turning on Q9 and pulling the /LOCK line high, causing a high at one of the inputs of IC9 and
disabling transmitter operation.
Three additional stages of buffering and gain are provided by IC12, Q18 and Q2, delivering drive to the output
transistor Q21.
