Projectiles: Types of Projectile Motions
Projectiles: Types of Projectile Motions
• Projectile motion is basically the motion of an object that is moving in the air
and experiences a gravitational force.
• The two types of projectile motions are; Horizontally launched projectiles &
Non-Horizontally launched projectiles.
• Important Kinematic Equations are:
• Projectile motion is basically the motion of an object that is moving in the air and
experiences a gravitational force. Examples of a few projectile motions are football,
javelin and cannon balls as they all follow a parabolic trajectory which is a curved path
and fall to the ground due to earth’s gravitational force.
• To initiate a projectile motion, a force is applied to an object that causes the object to
move and once moving on a curved path, the only two forces that act upon it are air
resistance and gravitational force.
• The particle has an initial horizontal speed of ucosθ, which is unchanged throughout
the motion.
• Vertically the particle has an initial speed of usinθ. It falls under gravity and is
accelerated downwards with an acceleration of g ms-1,where g = 9.8 ms-2 (approx.)
Change of vertical & horizontal components
General Points
The strategy is to consider the horizontal and vertical components of the motion separately,
and use the equations of motion in each direction.
use s = ut + ½at2 vertically (if it is returning to the same height at which it started
find the time taken for it to finish its journey (as above), then use s = ut horizontally
The maximum height attained occurs when the particle is momentarily stationary, before
falling under gravity. The vertical component of speed is zero at this point (v=0).
Range(R)
The range is simply the horizontal component of speed multiplied by the time of flight.
Time of flight
The time of flight is calculated from the vertical component of the velocity. It is the time it
takes for the particle to go up, reach its maximum height and come down again.
Method 1
So, this is twice the time to maximum height.
If the time to maximum height is t secs. Then the time of flight is 2t.
Consider motion up to maximum height. This is attained when the final velocity v = 0.
Method 2
Hence:
t = 0 or
Question 2:
A boy throws a stone horizontally off a cliff. It hits the sea 2 seconds later, at a distance of 40
m from the foot of the cliff.
Calculate the
(a) height of the cliff
(c) direction in which the stone is moving when it strikes the water.
Question 3:
A bullet is fired horizontally at 850ms-1 from a height of 1.8 m above the ground. Calculate
the
(a) time it takes to hit the ground
Hint:
Start vertical speed = 11sin45o Start horizontal speed = 11cos45o. Need to find time
for jumper to return to ground.
02. A boy throws a ball with a speed of 40ms-1 at an angle of 30o to the horizontal.
Assuming the ball is projected from ground level,
Find
(a) the time taken for the ball to reach its greatest height
(b) the horizontal distance travelled by the ball
03. A girl stands at the top of a cliff, and throws a stone with a speed of time
displacement-time graph vertical displacement parabola 20ms-1 at an angle of 10o
above the vertical. It hits the sea 3 seconds later. Find
(c) the highest distance above the cliff reached by the stone
(c) the time at which the velocity is at an angle of 45o below the horizontal
