You have now read about different ways of dealing with juvenile crime. Choose one question
and develop a well-written answer (150-200 words). Refer to the readings if necessary. (Crime
busting: what works? Methods of punishing & Michael Fay’s Caning)

1. Some people believe that you must accept and abide by all the laws and punishments of the
country or town in which you live. Others disagree. Do you believe that you always have to
agree with the laws and punishments wherever you live? Are the laws always made to protect
you? What can people do when they disagree with the laws?

2. The juvenile punishments presented in the above mentioned articles have both supporters and
critics. Which punishments that you have read about in the articles do you find acceptable?
Which punishments do you find unacceptable? Why?

ANSWER 2:

I find teen courts appropriate for the juvenile delinquents. For instance, if a teenager who has stolen
something gets sentenced to a year in prison, will get his young mind exploited by other criminals who
have already done hideous crimes. Consequently, after the completion of his imprisonment, he will get
more aggressive and criminal minded and then will prove to be a greater threat to society than he was
before going to the jail. In teen courts, teenagers are not sentenced to harsh punishments rather they
are sentenced to do community work and or writing essays and their criminal record is also erased. By
this way they not only serve their penance but they also move on from their pasts.

The punishment which I find very absurd is punishing the parents. Apart from the fact that one should
not be charged with crimes done by someone else there is a psychological aspect attached to it also.
Parents are always overprotective for their children, so they can do anything to save their child from
getting harsh treatment. As a result the real offender does not get penalized by the law but instead
one’s parents, who have done nothing wrong, are fined.
