36 hours – 1st term
Instructor: Johannah A. Remata

INTRODUCTION

As per Wikipedia, the word “Dance” come from an Old German word Danson Which
means “to stretch”. All dancing is made up of stretching and relaxing. as an art form that
generally refers to movement of the body, usually rhythmic and music, used as a form
of expression, social interaction or presented in a spiritual or performance setting.

Now the question is how to dance? Before you will be able to dance you have to learn
and understand the rhythm first.

Rhythm, from the Greek word ῥυθμός, rhythmos meaning "movement marked by the
regulated succession of strong and weak elements, or of opposite or different
conditions" (Anon. 1971, 2537).

Rhythm is related to and distinguished from pulse, meter, and beats. It may be defined
as the way in which one or more unaccented beats are grouped in relation to an
accented one and can always involves an interrelationship between a single, accented
beat and either one or two unaccented beats.

In the performance arts, rhythm is the timing of events on a human scale, of musical
sounds and silences that occur over time or the steps of a dance. To get rhythm when
dancing means producing a rhythmic relationship to some music that is playing. To be
able to produce rhythm to some music, you have to be able to produce rhythm first.

In this course, you will be able to know how to dance with rhythm. The close relation
between dance and music around a rhythmic pattern – how to determine the rhythm of
the dance, to give its emphasis or to how to maintain the same beat. It is designed for
