GENERAL MAINTENANCE

BEFORE USING.
ROUTINE MAINTENANCE
Every month
2. Inspect swive1for wear and/or leakage, noting the area that the bail contacts the traveling
block, the too1joints, and the connections for the drill fluid lines. IF WEAR AND/OR
LEAKAGE IS PRESENT, DO NOT USE UNTIL UNIT IS REPAlRED.
When Required
Remove the two (2) W' NPT hex bushings, Item # 4610cated in the Bonnet, Item # 16.
Remove the 3/8" pipe plug, Item # 41 located in the Box, Lower Oil, Item 22
Completely drain the old oil from the bearing case, be sure that the old oil is properly disposed
of.
Install the 3/8" pipe plug, Item #41 back into the oil box and tighten.
Fill bearing case with a good grade SAE 90 gear oil through one (1) of the two (2) W'
NPT holes located on the bonnet.
Fill until oil exits the other holes, wait two (2) - three (3) minutes and add additional oil.
Check the W' NPT hex bushing with the vent, Item #46/47B (insure that the vent is free and can
open and close). NOT PROPERL y VENTING THE BEARING CASE CAN AND WILL
CAUSE FAILURE IN THE UPPER AND LOWER OIL SEALS.
Install the two (2) Yz" NPT hex bushings, Item # 46 and tighten.
Clean and remove all excess oil from the exterior of the swivel and the work area.
Remove the OR-358-90, Item#13 (Drwg B-130AorB) from the top ofthe Spindle Adapter, Item
# 30.
Remove the eight (8) S-SHCS-0.50-1.50, Item #18 from the Spindle Adapter, Item # 30
Remove the Gasket, Item #51 from the top ofthe stem (maybe located in the inside ofthe
removed Spindle Adapter.
Remove the two (2) Set Screws, Item # 29 locking the Retainer, Bearing, Item # 31 to the
Bonnet, Item # 16
Remove the O-ring, Item # 33 from the outside diameter ofthe Retainer, Bearing.
Remove the O-ring, Item # 19 from the outside diameter of the Stem, Item #24
Clean the Spindle Adapter, Item # 30, check for grooves on the seal area. Repair or replace if
grooves are greater than .0313 (1/32") deep per side.
NOTE: The lips of both the upper housing seal are to hold oil inthe bearing case. Please install
correctly.
Drain the oil from the swivel, follow the first part ofTO CHANGE OIL OF BEARING CASE,
do not fill with oil.
Unscrew the Sub, Item # 25 from the Stem, Item # 24 (LEFT HAND THREAD)
Remove the eight (8) Bolts, Item # 23, securing the oil box to the bearing housing.
Remove the Box, Lower Oil, Item # 22 by sliding it down the spindle.
Remove the O-ring, Item # 40 from the oil box
Clean the removed Box, Lower Oil, Itero #22 and the now exposed Sleeve, Lower Wear, Itero
#43
Check the Sleeve, Lower Wear, Item # 43 for grooves in the seal surface area. Replace if greater
than 0.031 (1/32") per side. NOTE; Ifthis part requires replacement, it is a sweat on fit and will
require heat to be removed. Please allow ample time of the spindle to cool before installing the
new parto After installation is complete, the installed part may be cooled with a wet towel. This
part must be cool before oil seals are put in contact.
NOTE: The lips ofthe lower oil seals are installed to hold oil in the bearing case.
Bring swivel down to a safe working height, stop rotation, and mud circulation.
Unscrew and remove (ONLY) the four (4) Bolts, Item #27 (Drwg. B-158B or C) these are the
bolts on the bail side ofthe bonnet. NEVER REMOVE MORE THAN FOUR (4) BOLTS IN
THIS AREA WHILE REMOVING THE PACKING CAPSULE.
Collapse Packing Capsule by prying the Flange, Upper Packing, Item #2 down towards Packing
Box, Item # 1
Remove the OR-358-90, ITEM #13 and clean the face ofthe Adapter, Spindle, Item # 30 and
clean the upper face ofthe bonnet where the Flange, Upper Packing, Item # 2 seals.
Install the four (4) Bolts, ITEM #27 and tighten equally in opposite directions, ALWAYS
TIGHTEN THESE BOLTS FIRST.
Pry the lower half ofthe Packing Capsule down and install and evenly tighten the six (6) Bolts,
Item # 17.
Lubricate the Packing through the Zerk Fitting, Item #10 located in the Packing Box, Item #1
Close Kelly Cock and pressure test to 5000 PSI or Iess. Note a pressure greater than 1000 PSI is
required to seat the single piece of packing in the Flange, Upper Packing. If this is not done,
leakage could be present in the area ofthe Flange, Upper Packing until working pressure exceeds
a pressure of 1000 PSI.
Disassemble the oId Packing Capsule and clean all removed metal parts
Inspect and replace all metal parts that are damaged and/or show excessive wear
Install one (1) piece ofPacking, Item # 9, into the Ring, Bottom, Item # 3
Install O ring, Item #12 into the outer gro ove ofthis Ring, Bottom
Install one (1) piece ofPacking, Item #9 into each ofthe Ring, MiddIe, Item #4
Install one piece of Packing, Item #9 into the Ring, Orease, Item #5
On a flat clean surface place the Ring, Bottom, Item # 3 with the packing up and install one (1)
of the Ring, Middle, Item #4 with Packing up
Install O ring, Item # 11 into the o-ring groove in the top ofthe Ring, Upper, Itern #6
Place the Flange, Upper Packing, Item # 2 onto the top ofthe Packing Box, Item # 1
Instan the last piece of Packing, Item #9 into the other Ring, Bottom, Itero # 3
Install the O ring, Item # 12 into the outer gro ove of this Ring, Bottom, Item # 3
Install the Ring, Lock (Item # 7) onto this Ring, Bottom, Item # 3
Instan this assembly (Ring, Bottom, Item # 3, Packing, Item # 9, Ring, Lock, Item # 7, and
O ring, Item #12) onto the short end ofWashpipe, Item # 8
Note: CHECK TO INSURE THE EXTENSIONS OF THE RING, LOCK SLIP ONTO
THE FLA TS PROVIDED ON THE W ASHPIPE.
Slide the Washpipe Assembly (Washpipe, Item # 8, Ring, Bottom, Item #3, Packing, Item #9,
Ring, Lock, Item # 7 and O ring, Item # 12) into the Flange, Upper Packing, Item # 2 and
through the assembled Packing Box.
Turn completed Packing Capsule on its side and instan the O ring, Item # 11, into the grooves on
the two (2) Ring, Bottom, Item # 3 and wire the Packing Capsule together.
