USEFUL
MATERIALS
What’s New
9
Make a quick list of the materials found in the sections for cooking,
housekeeping, laundry, gardening, baking and sewing.
What are the good effects of the materials in your list? The usefulness of a
certain material depends on its properties. There are materials that are durable and
therefore can be reused many times. Though there are some that are not meant to be
reused, creative and inventive people still find other ways to use them.
In the first column is a list of materials found at home, in school and in the
community. In the second column, write the uses of the materials listed in the first
column.
In the second column, write a word/ group of words associated to the given word in
the first column. Do this in your module.
What is It
Materials are considered useful when they served their purpose or even beyond.
Some useful materials can also be reused, take for example, bottles are made to
contain any solid or liquid material. When they are already empty, they can still be
used for other purposes – as a flower vase, a coin bank, or a house decor. Whether a
bottle is made of plastic or glass, it has a property that makes it reusable. Useful
materials may have properties such as durability, resistance to water, heat or acid,
flexibility, elasticity and hardness.

What other materials in your home can you consider as harmful? Why do you
consider them as harmful materials?
What’s New
Picture of left-over foods, food scraps, rotten fruits and vegetables, bleach, gasoline
Left-over foods, food scraps, rotten fruits and vegetables are examples of safe waste
materials. Household materials with warning signs such as poison for bleach and
flammable for gasoline.
16
Safe waste materials are not poisonous or toxic. Some of it can even be reused
or recycled. Example of safe waste materials include paper, clothing, plant parts and
food. Paper and clothing can be recycled while plant and food can easily decompose
and can be used as source of organic fertilizer.
What is It
Look at the given pictures of the materials. Write them on the first column.
Then, put a check ( ⁄ ) on the second column if you find the material useful, and (X) if
you consider it waste.
For those materials which are considered as waste, which among them must be
disposed of with extra care? Highlight the words with shade of green crayon.

When do we say that a material is useful? A material is considered useful when it serves
its purpose or even beyond. The usability of a certain material depends on its properties.
There are materials that are made to last long and therefore can be reused many times. There
are also those not meant to be reused, though they can be utilized to serve another purpose.
On the other hand, harmful waste materials cannot be dumped straight into a landfill.
These materials can be toxic or harmful to living things when not disposed properly. These are
the following: toxic, can cause injury, cannot be dumped straight into a landfill, can pollute the
environment easily and takes too much time to decompose.
What’s In
Look at the words in the box. Identify them using the description below:
