pick one and decide what the members should do and what they want
to do given the circumstance.

Example:

Waving back
to someone
you do not
know.

What you should do: Move on.

What you want to do: Pretend you have another friend behind them that
you were actually waving at, and really commit by waving furiously until
it looks like you might be calling attention to fire.

1. Standing with your crush in an elevator.

2. Entering a party on your own and standing around with no one to talk to.
3. Saying goodbye to someone, and then realizing he is going the same
direction as you.
4. Meeting somebody you hate in the hallway.
5. Accidentally touching hands with a stranger in a bus.

 The five groups will take turn in sharing their answer in class.

Discussion:

Reading of the poem Sonnet 29 by George Santanaya.

Analysis

Comprehension questions:
1. What does the opening line of the poem mean?
2. Who is being addressed by the poet?
3. Why does the poet consider the faiths of the old his daily bread?
4. What makes the persona happy?

Abstraction

The persona is happy and contented despite his inadequacies in life.

Others might be rich in material possessions but impoverished in spirit. The
persona humbly recognizes his need for God and receptivity to God’s
provision of spiritual being in Him. He then finds satisfaction in seeking His
kingdom first.

A rhyme scheme is the pattern of rhyme between lines of a poem or

song. It is usually referred to by using letters to indicate which lines rhymes;
lines designated with the same letter all rhyme with each other. Therefore, it
is the pattern of end rhymes of lines.

Application

If you are in the same circumstance with the persona of the poem,
how do you think are you going to deal with it?

IV. Evaluation
Give the rhyme scheme of the poem.

The Bludgeoning of Circumstance

It struck me hard, yet I’m not dead

I’ll only forge beyond ahead
And never lose my ground, my stance
To bludgeoning of circumstance

It stuck its blade, it tried to kill

And let blood drip from my heart’s will
But through my soul was slightly bent
To bludgeoning of incident

Never did I to it give in

Instead I forged ahead to win
At last it struck with sharp his lance
And took me down, this circumstance

And let me bleed, its shrill laughter

My woes, my thoughts of dole after
Belittled me to nothing more
Till I dropped wan and cold and sore

Yet gave up, ne’er before I’ve done

And tried I to rise like morn’s sun
And with my light I veered from sight
All circumstance and dark its, might

And then I stood up and with my blade

I did knick-knack and brought the fate
That long I waited ever thence
The death of darkest circumstance
