READING
Read the text about giving presents.

Imagine you’re going on a business trip to another country. You will be met by people from that country and you
want to take some small gifts with you. What should you buy? First of all, don’t take Belgian chocolate to Belgians
or French wine to Parisians. Your hosts know more about which ones to buy than you do. One good idea is to
take something from your country with you. However, be careful with religious customs. Don’t take leather to
Hindus in India. Why? Cows are important for Hindus and it would not be respectful to give a gift of leather.

Also don’t give knives or scissors since in many countries they symbolize breaking a relationship. When you
take a gift from your country, be sure it really was made in your country. Don’t take something with a “Made in
Taiwan” label on it if you are going to China. Also don’t give clothing to people if you don’t know them well since
it might seem too personal.

When you give the gift, be careful. If you are giving a gift in a Muslim country, don’t give it with your left hand.
The left hand is unclean. Give it with the right hand. However, if you are in an Asian country, give and receive
gifts with two hands to show respect. When giving gifts, small errors can cause serious problems.

3 Now answer the questions. Are the statements below Right (A) or Wrong (B)? If there is not enough
information to answer, choose Doesn’t say (C).
