Lightwell offers fixtures including systems such as LoRa, TviLight,

Lightwell is a hardware system integrator and product development company. It doesn’t

operate cloud-services, will not analyse big-data, will not operate a communications
network and doesn’t create rules and regulations in order to achieve interoperability.
What we do is to look at what technology is available, analyse what the trends are and
optimise our design on these long-term projections. Meaning, since Lightwell is active
in the Public Lighting business, that we designed a pole that can help achieve the goals
Smart Cities are all about: LightMotion is this solution towards a more sustaibable future.

 Building a Smart City
starts with Lightwell

To understand the trajectory is to understand the starting point. In the

debate on Smart City development there are two visions:
The first is that in order to achieve maximum results all rules and
regulations, technology and urban planning visions must adapt. An almost
revolutionary change is needed, making the starting point an empty space
of endless possibilities. Lightwell brands this vision as “Future Cities”.

The second vision is the existing situation: already well developed Cities
with all kinds of regulatory forces and stakeholders that sometimes are
hard to convince to join this new wave of technological opportunities to
achieve Smart City goals. Lightwell likes to call this approach “Energising
Cities”, taking the existing situation and improve it via system-integration.

The LightMotion in The Hague

(to be installed in October 2018)

This project will be the first public space LightMotion project

under the umbrella of Smart City development by a major
City in The Netherlands.
Installation Company BAM Infra will make a new connection
(3x25A) to the power grid. Charging sessions will be enabled
and hosted by EV charging operator New Motion. Luxis
fixtures equipped with Luminext Smart Lighting will be
the solution for the constant power supply, guaranteeing a
simultaneous lights on/of moment with the surrounding public
lighting.

The Elaad approved LightMotion is the result of years of innovations, testing,

pilots and working together with partners around the world.
In Denmark a LightMotion was installed at the DOLL-centre. This pilot gave
Lightwell valuable infromation about durability and user-data insight.

You may not know him, but Friso’s designs were
and still are widely used throughout Dutch society.

Friso Kramer His chairs were in the school classrooms, in offices

and lunchrooms. His public lighting designs were
installed by the millions. His designs are collectors

museums. His name fits well in a list with Martijn
Visser and Dick Bruna, designers who continue the
Dutch modernistic tradition of Berlage, Mondriaan
and Rietveld.

The Friso Kramer LED is a typical example of classic

Dutch design combined with innovative technology.
Lightwell asked Kramer – responsible for the
design of the inverted-cone streetlamp that has
dominated the streets of the Netherlands since its
appearance in the 1960’s – to update the product.
It was released at the Stedelijk Museum in 2012
in Amsterdam by Elderman Gehrels and was very
wel recieved as a perfect example of balancing
innovative technology with Dutch Design.

Lightwells “Friso Kramer”

Downtown Amsterdam.
At the old navy base in the City Centre of
Amsterdam, Lightwell was the leading partner in
the creation of a living lab. Lighwell combined
a private LoRa gateway in combination with LoRa
Lora Smart Lighting, a future proof pole-design Ready
(“add-on ready”) and the newly developed Friso
Kramer LED direct in 2017. The Marineterrein
organisation was the client and together with
Ziut we where able to create exactly what
they wanted: Dutch Design in combination with
future proof technology that can be used for
other Smart City solutions as well. The private
Gateway guarantees a fee-free communication
network under own control so that future
partners have an open access to the network.

The Luxis SRD2 is a real Smart Lighting fixture, and the big brother of
the SRDS2. This luminaire can go up to 21.000 Lumen, and is the first
to be used in the DC movement. It is also the first in which Zhaga is a
standard used technology.

At the Port of Amsterdam, Lightwell supplied Luxis Direct Current fixtures
for the innovative DC-public lighting network. Lightwell is a founding
partner in the DC-movement. DC technology can and probably will
become a future standard in Smart Grid development.

The Drechtsteden Dordrecht, Alblasserdam and Sliedrecht have joined forces and entered into a unique partnership
with contractor Ziut.
Together they have put out a tender in the form of LED Mast luminaires to meet EU standards in the field of energy.
Over 7 suppliers competed with a total of over 30 fixtures. Lightwell has, as winner with the Luxis Small fixture, won 3
out of 5 lots.

 Drechtsteden & Lightwell:
Together towards a Smart City

The relationship between Drechtsteden and Lightwell started in 2017, after Lightwell won the big public lighting
tender. The result of the tender was very clear: Lightwell put forward the best deal in combination with the
highest quality, beating all relevant competitors in the market. All fixtures were put to extreme testing by the
tender-organization and after a lot of vetting Lightwell proudly signed the contracts.

Part of the deal is that up until 2022 Lightwell will supply the Cities of Dordrecht, Sliedrecht and Alblasserdam
with all fixtures meant for bicycle lanes, residential areas and high-traffic roads. Lightwell is one of the few companies that is an official Philips

In Drechtsteden, the first modules of Signify, called CityTouch, are already in use, creating an installed database of
over 400 Luxis fixtures. Around the Netherlands, over 2000 Luxis fixtures are now future proof and ready for
creating a first and easy to implement layer of Smart City infrastructure.

Luxis fixtures can also be quipped with 2 Zhaga connectors (one on top, on at the bottom of the fixture). The
second connector can be used for censoring. So a Municipality can also create a network of sensor-ready fixtures,
and decide whenever it wants to add motion, CO2 or other censors. Or think about the potential of renting-out
these sensor-locations to other businesses who can implement an earnings-model based on a grand network of
sensors.

This is why public lighting fixtures are the most easy, most accessible entry-point for Smart City development.

 Rotterdam & Lightwell:
A partnership in innovation

The City of Rotterdam and Lightwell are long-time partners.

Lightwell supplies the City all 6m and 8m pole LED fixtures.

Because of an 8-year contract that started in 2014, we worked
together, over the years, on several Smart City projects and even
presented the LightMotion solution together during the Infratech Fair
in 2017. The Luxis fixture is used in numerous Smart Lighting projects
in the Netherlands and beyond, and the Rotterdam Central District
is one of the key focus areas for this technology. The Luxis fixture is
used in combination with several different Smart Lighting systems
in Rotterdam, among others Signify City Touch, LoRa, Luminext and
Tvilight. At the Havenspoorpad location Rotterdam we tested out
7 different systems in 2016 to make sure interoperability is possible
while using different Smart Lighting systems simultaneously. Lightwell
provided all the Luxis fixtures with the different Smart Lighting
systems.

Street lights are the backbone of urban infrastructure and
one of the most important public assets.
Street lights are also an important consumer of energy,
accounting for 19% of the global electricity use, and costing
Europe €10 billion each year. Furthermore, roughly a third
of all European street lights still run on a 1930s standard,
resulting in massive energy waste and CO2 emissions.

Flying over the continent at night, one would see the
earth entangled in a dense network of bright lights—many
of those burning without a single person around them,
consuming energy non-stop and stimulating light pollution.
It is not surprising that, according to estimations, Europe
can save up to €3 billion in energy costs each year, just by
adopting new lighting technologies.
It made us wonder—what if we could make sure that
there’s always just as much light as needed, and precisely
where it is needed? Could we phase out the obsolete street
lamps that turn our cities into ceaseless energy consumers?
Could we offer an alternative way of lighting up the streets,
without ever compromising public safety?
Over the years, we have developed and perfected the
technology that allows this, and even more. We began
by inventing an advanced wireless street lighting solution.
We moved on to developing the comprehensive sensor

In order to simplify everything we developped a very user friendly coding system which allows you to always
find out which type of luminaire is placed, which type of light, dim-profiles, telemanagement system, etc.

The structure of the code starts with the product name, following by light output, amount of LEDS, CRI
colour temperature, Optics, Light Cover Shape, Driver, Telemanagement and options.
To make it a bit easier, we gave each step a colour with an example.
