(viii) Quality Control Tests and Their Frequencies :
(a) Tests Prior to Construction :-
The quality control tests and their frequencies for borrow material would be as shown in the following table :-
Quality Control Tests and their Frequencies for Borrow Material, Earthwork For
Embankment And Sub grade (Before Construction)
NOTES
* Test for free swell index to be conducted only in case of expansive soils.
** Presence of deleterious content can be initially through color and existence of
any organic matter. Where such observations need for further testing, simple tests at
(i) and (ii) above shall be carried out. Detailed testing as per IS : 2720-part 22 and 27 shall be done
only after presence of deleterious content is confirmed by simple test.
*** For hill roads, the frequency of tests may be increased depending upon the variability of strata met.
(ix) It is necessary to achieve the desired quality control, the Executive Engineer and Assistant Engineer
should exercise Quality Control checks as per the frequency mentioned in the following table for
embankment and Sub-grade construction :-
(x) The Quality Control Tests on Earth work for subgrade (in cutting or filling) and their frequency, prior to
construction, shall be as per Table 4 (B)
(xi) The Field Quality Control Tests during construction shall be as per Table -5.
(xii) The Quality Control checks by AE/EE shall be as per Table-6 (B) for Sub-grade
The GSB layer is laid on top of sub-grade. It functions as a drainage layer for the pavement. Material for sub-
base shall be natural sand, moorum, gravel, crushed stone, crushed slag, brick metal, kankar or combination
thereof, depending on grading requirement.

Where the sub-grade is clayey and impermeable with CBR less than 4 and annual rainfall more than 1000mm, it is
desirable to provide a drainage layer of dust free coarse to medium sand of 100mm thickness over the sub-grade
in full formation width.
Quality Control Requirement :
1. Materials :-
(I) Grading :- The grading for granular sub-grade (GSB) should conform to the requirements given
in the following table :-
Grading for Granular sub-bse Materials
IS Sieve Designation Percent by weight passing the IS Sieve
Grading I Grading II Grading III
75 mm 100 - -

(ii) Atterberg Limits :- The material passing 425 micron sieve, when tested according to IS:2720 (Part-5)
shall have liquid limit and plasticity index not more than 25 and 6 respectively.
(iii) On clayey sub-grades, the percent passing IS Sieve 0.075 mm shall not exceed 5.
(iv) The wet aggregate impact value (IS :5640) shall not exceed 5.
(v) CBR value : The Material with a minimum soaked CBR value of 20 will be acceptable for Granular sub-
base. In case, the sub-base material of the requisite soaked CBR value is not available within
economical leads, the base material, meeting any of the specified grading and other requirements with
a soaked CBR value of not less than 15 can be permitted, with the approval of the competent authority.
(vi) For drainage layer, grading should confirm to the requirements given in the following table :-
Grading of Coarse to medium sand for Drainage layer
(2) Horizontal Alignment : The edges of the sub-base shall be correct withing a tolerance limit of (+) 30 mm
in plain and rolling terrain and (+) 50 mm for hilly terrain.
(3) Surface Levels :- The tolerance in surface level for granular sub-base will be restricted sub-base will be
restricted (+) 10mm and (-) 20 mm. A grid of 10m by 2.5 m may be formed to check the surface level.

(ii) Screening :-
(a) Physical Requirements; Screening material is used in WBM to fill the voids in coarse aggregates. Screening
should normally consist of same material as the coarse aggregate. However, where economic considerations so
warrant, non plastic material such as marum or gravel with liquid limit less than 20 and plasticity index less than 6
may be used. Fraction passing 75 micron should not exceed 10 percent.
(b) Grading : The screening should conform the grading specified in the following table :
Grading Requirement of Screening Material
(iii) Binding Material :- Application of binding material may not be necessary when the screening used are of crush
able type. Binding material of used as a filler material shall comprise of a suitable material approved by the Engineer
having a Plasticity Index (PI) of value less than 6 for subbase/ base course and 4-10 for surfacing course as determined
in accordance with IS 2720 (Part-5). The quantity of binding material will depend the type of screening, for estimation of
quantities, the following may be adopted :
Quantity for 75mm Compacted thickness WBM = 0.06 - 0.09 m3 / 10m2
Quantity for 100mm Compacted thickness WBM = 0.08 - 0.10 m3 / 10m2

Quality Control Tests
(i) Tests Prior to Construction :
The quality control tests to be carried out prior to construction are indicated in the following Table :
Quality Control Tests prior to Construction
Sl.No. Type of Test Frequency
1. Aggregate Impact Value Test (IS:2386 Part 4) One test from each
identified source.
2. Aggregate Water Absorption Test (IS:2386 Part 3) -do-
3. Grading Test of Aggregates (where water -do-
absorption, as at 2 above, exceeds 2%) (IS:2386 Part 5)
4. Grading, LL and PI of Crush able Screening (IS: 2720 Part 5) (where -do-
Screening are to be used from the same source as the Stone
Aggregates, this test is not needed
5. LL and PI of the Binding Material, when used. -do-
(ii) Tests During Construction
The quality Tests to be carried out during construction are indicated in the following Table :
Quality Control Tests During Construction
Sl.No. Type of Test Frequency
1. Grading of Stone Aggregates and At least 2 tests to be carried
Screening (IS:2386 Part I) out for a day’s work.
2. Flakiness Index of Stone aggregates (IS:2386 Part I) -do-
Volumetric Analysis :
The test is conducted to make sure that the adequate quantity and composition of material have been
used in the construction. For conducting the test, dig a pit 0.5m * 0.5m in the area, where random checking is to be
carried out. Take out all the WBM material from the pit. refill the pit with the dug material without camp acting. If the pit
can be filled by using not more than 65% of the dug material, it is indicative of adequate compaction and use of
specified of all materials combined together.

BITUMINOUS CONSTRUCTION - PRIME COAT
The Surface of all granular layers, on which a bituminous course is to be laid, should be cleaned of all loose
material and dust by air-jet or wire brushes or other approved means and should be correct to line, level and camber,
within the tolerances specified for base-course.
Prime Coat over Granular Base :
The work shall consist of application of a single coat of low-viscosity liquid bituminous material to a porous
granular surface, preparatory of a single coat of low-viscisity liquid bituminous material to a porous granular surface,
preparatory to the super-imposition of bituminous treatment or mix. The primer to be applied on the WBM surface,
before laying BT, shall be slow-setting bitumen emulsion-Grade : SS-1, complying with IS 2887.
Normal temperature range of spraying emulsion should be 20U C to 60U C. It shall not be applied, when
weather is foggy, rainy, windy, temperature in shade is less than 10U C or when there is standing water on the surface of
WBM, Primed surface shall be allowed to cure for atleast 24 hours. unabsorbed primer should be blotted with sand
using the minimum quantity possible.
The rate of application of bituminous - emulsion for prime coat for WBM/WMM surface shall be 6-9 Kg. per 10
Sqm. surface area.
(ii) Quality Control Checks : The Junior Engineer shall carry out checks daily and record the result in
the own handwriting.
TACK COAT
This work shall consist of the application of 2 single coat of low viscosity liquid bituminous material to an
existing bituminous road surface preparatory to another bituminous construction. Tack coat is to applied over primed
WBM surface immediately before taking up PMC.
The biner for tack coat shall be Rapid Setting Bituminous Emulsion Grade : RS-1 complying with IS - 1887.
The normal range of sparying temperature for emulsion shall be 20U C to 60 U C. The surface shall be slightly damp, but
not wet.
