Prototype Detailed Lesson Plan in Science 8

Fourth Quarter, Week 3

I. Objectives:
A. Content Standards: the concept of species; the species as being further
classified into a hierarchical taxonomic system
B. Performance Standards: report (e.g., through travelogue) on the
activities that engage in to protect and conserve endangered and
economically important species.
C. Learning Competencies/ Objectives: classify organisms using the
hierarchical taxonomic system

Competency Code: S8LT-Ivh-20-4

At the end of the discussion, the learners are expected to:
a. Describe the organisms according to their characteristics;
b. Classify worms according to their Phylum
c. Recognize the need to classify worms; and
d. Explain the importance of worms in the ecosystem.
II. Content: PHYLUM PLATYHELMINTHES, NEMATODA AND ANNELIDA

III. Procedure
Teacher’s Activities Learners’ Activities

1. Reviewing previous lesson or presenting the new lesson

 The teacher will have a short activity.
 Students will identify to which Phylum each picture belongs.

2. Establishing a purpose for the lesson

 Have you ever seen a worm?
 Can you tell me worms that you know?

Activity 1
The teacher will group the class into 6 groups. Each group will be
given a set of pictures where they will be asked to group the worms into 3
classifications. The aim of the activity is to let the student group the
pictures according to their physical characteristics.

 How did your group classify the worms? What is/are your basis?

3. Presenting examples/instances of the new lesson

 Students will be grouped into 6. The 6 groups will be subdivided

into 2 for the next activity where there are 3 types of fact sheets
which describe the characteristics of Phylum Annelida, Phylum
Nematoda, and Phylum Platyhelminthes.
 Each group in every set will be given 1 fact sheet to read and take
note the characteristics of the given Phylum. In this activity,
students will be able to change or correct their answer in Activity 1.

4. Discussing new concepts and practicing new skills #1

 Each group will have 1 representative to explain their work. He/she
will explain to the class why they classify the set of worms as under
Phylum Nematoda, Annelida, and Platyhelminthes. Two groups will
be assigned in every Phylum to explain their work.
Guide Questions:
 What do you call to the organisms that belong to this Phylum?
 What are the characteristics of worms under Phylum
Nematoda? Platyhelminthes? Annelida?
 What are examples of worms are in this Phylum?
 What is/are your reason/s why you classify the worms under
this Phylum?
 Students will be graded according to the attached rubric.

5. Discussing new concepts and practicing new skills #2

 Again, how
are worms
classified?
 Are
worms
important?
How
important
they are?

6.Developing mastery
Students are asked,”Is there a need to classify worms?” In the discussion,
students must come to an idea that, there is also a need for worms to be
classified, like any other organisms. Classification makes the organism easier to
be identified and distinguish among any other organisms. It may also help in
identifying whether the worm is parasitic or not (an additional
information/discussion about the parasitic worm may be done).
7. Finding practical application of new concepts and skills in daily living
When gardening, what will you do if you can find worms in the soil? Do you kill
them? Or play with it? Do worms need respect also?

Worms are living organisms. It has life and role in our ecosystem. Like
worms, it needs respect just like humans—we need and demand respect. Worms
might be small but they have life and role in this world. Worms such as
earthworms are used in gardening in your T.L.E for soil fertilization even leeches
are being used in medical field. Even big or small, light or heavy organisms,
every living organism have the right to live and need to be respected.

8. Making generalizations and abstraction about the lesson

Using a Venn Diagram, students has to compare and contrast the three Phyla. They
have to write down the common and distinguishing characteristics of each Phylum.

9. Evaluating learning
Direction: Identify in which Phylum each organism belongs discuss what makes
the organism belong to such Phylum.

10. Additional activities for application or remediation.

III. REFLECTION
Teacher:
A. No. of learners who earned 80% in the evaluation:
B. No. of learners who require additional activities for remediation who
scored below 80%:
C. Did the remedial lesson work?
No. of learners who caught up with the lesson:
D. No. of learners who continue to require remediation:
