Motion - “A body is said to be motion when it

change its position from its surrounding is know

Characteristics of Linear Motion

 Linear motion (Translation) occurs when all the parts
of a body move the same distance, in the same
direction, in the same time. The term linear refers If all the parts of the body move through

 The same direction

Motion if not non linear.
Example- Long jump; path of the athlete body’s

(Law of acceleration or Momentum)

and push a car, the car will have more

1. It is easier to push an empty shopping cart
 “Rate of change of momentum is directly than a full one, because the full shopping

Concept of Momentum-The quality of motion

possessed by the object or it is product of mass
and velocity of the body.
 When mass is in kilograms and acceleration is
in m/s/s, the unit of force is in newtons (N). P = MV
M (mass) = kg.
V (Velocity) = M/SC
Unit of measurement for P = kg m/sec.
 One newton is equal to the force required to
accelerate one kilogram of mass at one Example problem:  What is the momentum of an
object with mass of 2.00kg and a velocity of
meter/second/second. 40.0m/s? 
p = (2.00kg)(40.0m/s)
= 80.0 kg•m/s

F=mxa
How much force is needed to accelerate a

 Acceleration ‘a’ can be expressed as the change in
velocity per unit of time. 1400 kilogram car 2 meters per second/per
a = v2-v1 second2
t Formula is -
 F = m x a
v2 = Final Velocity
v1 = Initial Velocity  Fill in given numbers and units
t= time  F = 1400 kg x 2 meters per second/ second2
Substituting this for ‘a’ in the foregoing equation we  Solve for the unknown
get
F = m(v2-v1)
t
 2800 kg-meters/ second2 or 2800 N
= mv2-mv1
t
Ft = mv2-mv1

Second law is fully expressed by the equation.

 F = m x a. = a = F
M
a = acceleration of the body
 We know that objects
F = Applied Force with different masses
M= Mass of the Object

rate.
a = 150 m/s2

 m = 0.50 kg
 However, because of
 F=? the 2nd Law we know
F = ma
that they don’t hit the
ground with the same
F = (0.50 kg)(150 m/s2 )

F = ma F = ma
