The present Mariual contains recommendations on the repair of the car, which consists primarily in a replacement of worn out or damaged parts, assemb- lies, and units with standard and/or repair-size ones. The selection in a repair of pairs (shaft — hole), resulting in an assembly with fits corresponding to those specified in the Manual is a prerequisite for attaining a long trouble-free service of a unit or as- sembly after the repair. The sizes of the maximum permissible wear of parts, specified in the Manual, should not be regarded as absolute, since a pair with such actual dimensions at which the fits will correspond to those indicated in the Manual can be selected at a repair for a part whose wear exceeds the permissible amount. Then a rather prolonged period sets in, when the technical condition of the engine remains practically unchanged. As parts wear out, blow-by past piston rings in- creases, compression in cylinders lowers, oil leak through various clearances grows, and pressure in the lubricating system drops. Hence, the effective out- put of the engine drops progressively, while the ga- soline and oil consumption rises. The technical condition of the engine is determi- ned by the engine performance; the fuel consumption; the oil consumption; the compression in cylinders; the noise emitted by the engine when running. The technical condition of the engine is most cor- rectly determined by tecting it on a special test stand BO. Warm up the engine and chassis units by running the car at medium spe- eds for 30 min before starting the tests. Tightly shut the door windows. The free-wheeling distance of the car is delermi- ned in two runs in opposite directions. Riding at a speed of 50 km/m, disengage the clutch rapidly as the car has reached the reference line and at once throw the gearshift lever to the neutral. The maximum speed is determined in riding from a flying start in the highest gear for an I-km test di- stance. The car acceleration should be sufficient to reach a steady (maximum) speed by the moment of entering the test distance Measure the time of passing the test distance by the car with a stopwatch, turning it on and off as the car passes the kilometer posts defining the test distan- MeTpOBKX croAGoH, orpammmpawuX mepmuil yra ToK. 3a xeiierRUTeMbHOe aiaeHHe MakcuMaitbtofi ckopoerit aBTomoGi.is tIpHnuMaioT cpeanee apubme- Tueckoe Hs cKOpocTe!, HoaysieNNBX n ABYX saednax BO B3AHMHO NPOTHBONOAOXABX HANpaBaeMAX, BBITOA- HenHBIX HeTOcpemeTACHHO OANA 3a ApyTHM. Assumed as the actual value of the maximum car speed is the arithmetic mea n of the speeds measured for two opposite-direction runs performed one just aiter another. The car speed is found from the formula: Vv. eo (km/h), where 7 is the time of passing the I-km test distan- ce, 8. Pickup. For a full estimation of ihe engine perfor- mance, it should be tested for the pickup, which is accomplished by measuring the time of passing a I-km distance from standstill with a successive gear- shitting under the same conditions (engine thermal conditions, car load, road, weather, etc.) as above. Accelerate the car from standstill in the first gear by rapidly depressing the accelerator pedal. Start off the car smoothly. Shift gears rapidly and noiselessly under the most iavourabie conditions (on reaching the following speeds: in the Ist gear, about 15 km/h; in the 2nd gear, 30 km/h; in the 3rd gear, 50 km/h. Take measurements with the car riding in both directions; the measurements should immediate- ly follow one another). The time is measured irom the moment of star- ting-off till the moment of passing the boundary of the I-km distance. Calculate the average time from the measurement results. If the maximum car speed determined in the tests is not less than 85 km/h, and the acceleration time, not over 55 s, then the engine develops the required power. A more than 15-% decrease in the maximum speed from the rated one and a more than 25-% increase in the acceleration time on a 1-km distance with the car running gear in a proper technical condition and the above-mentioned test conditions observed indicate an inadequate output of the engine and a need for a more detailed check of its technical condition and for revealing the causes of a drop in the output. Economy Test Service Fuel Economy. The fuel economy perfor- mance of the ear, i. e, the relation between Tuel con- sumption Q (1/100 km) and car speed V (km/h) is shown in Fig. 4 The fuel economy in service greatly depends on the road and weather conditions, riding conditions (speed, load, distances and frequency of travels), and driver's skill, Because of this, the service fuel economy cannot be used as a basis for drawing a correct enough con- clusion on the technical condition of the car, and the more so, of the engine (since the fuel consumption is greatly affected by the state of the car running ge- ar). A correct characteristic of the technical condition of the engine is a reference fuel consumption, deter- mined in a fuel economy test. 13 Samep KonTpombHoro pacxona saKmowaeres 9 oupexenennt —pacxona tonanpa npu — ckopocrH 55...60 km/h c texnieckn HenpaBtoli xoqoRoH wa- CTHIO NPM coBMOReHHH YeaoBHT RenTANHA, HIOKeH- Hbix pature. Fuel should be fed to the carburettor from special graduated flasks or from a graduated tank, Take measurements only after normal engine thermal conditions have fully set in The calculated reference fuel consumption is re- ated to the predetermined speed. The actual speed should differ from the predeter- mined one by not more than -+-1 km/h. If the reference fuel consumption does not exceed 10 1/100 km, this indicates that the engine is in a good working order. The oil consumption by the engine is usually mea- sured for a period between oil changes at riding con- ditions typical for a normal service. Drain oil, with the oil filler neck open, for 10 min to allow it to completely flow down from crankcase walls. If the oil consuption exceeds 160 g per 100 km, the engine should be repaired, the replacement of worn out compression and oil-control piston rings with new ones being as a rule necessary in this case, An increased oil consumption may also result from coking (loss of mobility) of piston rings, excessive intake and exhaust valve stem clearances. Compression Test The compression in the engine cylinders is measu- red by a compressometer with normal valve clearan- ces and warmed-up engine (Fig. 5). To conduct the test, screw out the spark plugs and fully open the carburettor air choke and throttle. Next, insert the rubber tip of the compressometer into the spark plug hole of the Ist cylinder and press the tip tightly to the hole edge to form a seal. Then turn on the starter and keep it on until the pressure in the cylinder stops rising (but not longer than 10 s). The storage battery should be fully charged in order to provide for engine crankshait rotation at a 6.7 s*! (300... 400 rpm). Note: The engine crankshaft speed can be determined by measuring the fan pulley rotation speed with a frequency meter. ‘The fan pulley rolation speed should be not less than 67 s~! (405 rpm), since the transmission ratio of pulleys is of 1.5: 1. Having written down the maximum pressure in the cylinder, vent the compressometer. Measure the compression in turn in the remaining cylinders in a similar manner. The compression in cylinders of a normally operating engine varies over a rather wide range, from 7 to 10 kgi/em®; the difierence in comp- ression between cylinders should not exceed 1 kgi/em? The compression value thus measured substan- tially depends on the thermal state of the engine and crarikshaft speed in the test. The obtained compression value cannot serve by itself as a ground for putting the engine into repair; its measurement is resorted to for finding out more exactly the cause of a trouble. When the cause of a drop in the engine output is searched for, the compression test readily indicates the cylinder’ where the compression value is much lower. The following faults may be expected in such a cylinder: untight seating of valve heads on seats; broken or stuck piston rings; speed of 5.0. haoxoe ynaornene ronoaKoit uiLnutapos. Higher readings of the compressometer in this case most often indicate a sticking of piston rings, but if the compression value remains unchanged, this indicates an untight seating of valve heads on their seats or a poor seal between the cylinder end and cylinder head; set the piston to the T.D.C. on the compression stroke, brake the car with the hand brake, engage the highest gear, and feed compressed air under a pre: sure of 2...3 kgf/cm? into the spark plug hole. An air leak through the carburettor will indicate untight- ness of the intake valve, while a leak through the muffler, untightness of the exhaust valve Check of Noise of Running Engine With a sufficient practice, the technical condition of the engine can be judged from the noises it emits when running. By listening to the noises, it is possible to reveal increased clearances between mating parts, accidental breakages, loosened fastening of parts. It is to be borne in mind that operation of the piston group, camshaft drive, valve gear, ete, in an air-co- oled engine is well heard due to an absence of a li- quid jacket and owing to a finning. Therefore, do not regard the following noises as symptoms of a troub- le: irregular engine knocking which merges into an aggregate noise; periodic knocking of valves and tappets at nor- mal valve clearances; pronounced knocks in the engine, disappearing or appearing when the engine crankshaft speed changes; uniform, not sharp high-tone noise emitted by the running camshaft drive. It is essential to remember the noise of a normal- ly running air-cooled engine so as to be capable to distinguish abnormal knocks that result from s¢me trouble. An experience gained in listening to liquid-co- oled engines cannot be applied without corrections for judging the technical condition of an air-cooled engi- ne. While detecting an increased noise or some knock- ing in the engine is comparatively easy, only expe- rienced mechanics skilled in diagnosing such faults can determine the area of a knocking and its cause. Some directions on the technique of listening and determining faults are given in Table 1. A conclusion as to a need for repair is drawn in each particular case on the basis of all the tests and checks carried out, rs Tobauya 1 t Tposepxa rexnnvecnoro cocrostn asurarean no wynwocrH Fexaerce | pemie | ———————- Boswoseine nosmexcrann Mesto apocayuinanna| corommne | Beg epartep enya pwns noco6 yerpanenun B swan wacru | He sani | Flepeuen- | Peoxiii weraaamecxuh | OcaaGaeme xpenizenna | He aonyeraeren Cpesaine mrnpron gux- | Baxpemsre saxon xaprepa Koneta: | crt mt epeautero YoHa axonitka eiupyroun saxon B mnxwei wacru | Mporper | To xe | Tayxoit musxoro roxa | Ocrabaenne _nocaaxn | K sxenayarauin aonys- | Hocrenesnoe naaeue | Semestre onopst xaprepa Kone onop xonewwaroro wana | Kaetex 20 coxpaneuia | aamaeiin a encteame | xopembe noxunné oro asta aw yneniaenea aaaop | Aanaenua wacaa ci | ewaakie xi 3 Koper rnomummn: | creme exasitt B paiione uuam- | Xoaoanwh | Xozocron | Cysoh menxarouwi cry | Yeemmenmat — sasop | K sxcnayarauun aonye- | Yoeansensh — paexoa | Saveunre nopunie apoB xou (yatemmaerey no wepe | xexay.o6xoh nopunnn | xaeten 40. aoeTuacinw | wacna nporpesa auuaveas) | W wiameapoxt npesensitoro pacxo.a Boxouan nosepx- | Mporper | To xe | Orueranaisi _anonsnit | Ocna6aene oceans | He aonyexaerca Tloaowxa ceana no: | Sanemire cex0 Kaa sooty HAIApOR cryx, peako _suiaeamo- | cara kaanaia spesterme nopunia, ro- | nana Ite ha mysca paGorte 09K: WHOLpOR Bepxuza vaers | Xozoaut | To xe wos ssouxusi | Hawoe pa6ouero ropua | He xonyexacres Hisnoe xyaasxos paenpe- | 3aew#te nospensaen- xaprepa, Kozeiva roawarenn aeanrembiora waa nue toakaTeat B paftone sexru-| tporper | Ha cpea- | Yerko nuszeamouien | Oreyrersyer cxaaxa_p | To xe Tosser nsHoc 1 | Sasenute osu. fea mix aero. | YM or” paGorm Hoa: | noaisumikax reneparo paapymientenoauman: | iat ‘Tax apaute- | tirnson fexeparopa | pa, aoe noxuimtKoo kop reneparopa To me To xe | Ha uacro- | Illy mucoxoro rona | Hapymenne pextina pa- | To xe Mleperpes anurareas | Onueruse _wacanwuit tax ppauie: | (00H) Gon veititanropa isa peuiarop m nponeps- tons None. wenens eonporinre Te conpReHA KO uaroro 5a tig EHcTeN Ona. te oa. cheveMt O30 aa puule si ein peau B rovxnen vaeru | He saan | Tlepewen- | Pessumt werasannecenit | Buinzonscune exaaau- | He aonyexaeren Saaup warvnmsx amex | Samemre —eroanise Kaprepa wosenva: | crt wish crv tue waryua xoseiaroro nasa eran rusautomobile.ru 81 Table 1 Checking Engine Technical Condition from Noises Place of tstening | chetinal | Qvgating Nature of knocks. cause Manis of further | eration wih knking. Table 2 specifies nominal sizes, tolerances, clea- rances and interferences for the main mating’ parts of the engine as well as the maximum. permissible part wears and clearances. Using the Table, determi- ne the parts to be replaced because of their wear. DESIGN Crank Gear The longitudinal and cross-sectional views of the engine are shown in Figs 6, 7. The crankcase (Fig. 8) is of a tunnel type, cast of the MJI-5 magnesium alloy; solid side walls jointly with the front, rear, and inner transverse partitions impart the requisite stiffness to the crankcase. Bores are provided in the crankease rear wall for mounting the drive of the ignition distributor and oil pump, which are driven from a gear on the engine camshaft (gear ratio of 1: 1). Two longitudinal passages are formed in the crankcase on its left-hand side: passage /4 serving for oil withdrawal from the oil pump to the centrifu- gal oil cleaner and passage /5 serving for oil supply to crankshaft bearings. Four bores 8 arranged in pa- irs at an angle of 90° are made in the crankcase upper part for fitting the cylinders. The cylinders and cylin- der heads are fastened with studs /6 screwed into the crankcase. The support of the crankshaft middle main bearing is split, of two halves, and secured to the crankcase with two vertical bolts 4 (Fig. 9). The crankshaft iront and rear main bearings are solid ones. Rear ma- in bearing 15 (Fig. 17) is press-fitted directly into the crankease wall and locked by a lock, while front main bearing 11 is press-fitted into front support 10 and locked by a pin, The crankshaft main bearings are fabricated from a special aluminium alloy. Above the bores for the main bearings, supports 3 (Fig. 8) for the camshaft are bored out in the crankcase mid dle, front, and rear walls. Eight bored-out crankcase lugs accommodate tap- pets. The crankshaft (Fig. 10), a three-bearing one, is a high-strength cast iron. The diameter of main journals is of of crankpins, (50705) 33 mm, The diametral clearances between main journals and shells in a new engine are as follows: rear (at the flywheel end), 0.085...0.125 mm; middle, 19 55-002) mm} mm; the crank radius is of Ta6auya 2 Homunanuise pasMep, npegeabbe Waxlocks; aa20pH H HATSFH B OcHoRMUX coNpATaeMMK NeTAARX Conparaenne seven ‘Basen (enna) » cocamonnn SSepad seat Resch Oseonavente w xanwenorame | PANEP ne, seorens Jase] eaasanenue u nanneronanne | PA2M*P no, tereny. apexeano ™m min | max | “Sechayaraun 968-1004015-B. 968-1002021-A Topaens (aanerp 106%) Uamuap, .
