FAQs: Case Championship 2020

1. Why should I participate in a case competition?


- A case competition is a differentiated learning method. Use this opportunity to apply
popular concepts in finance and treasury to industry problems. They are also a great
value addition to your CV.

- This is a unique case competition because other than participating and competing with
the best minds to solve industry problems, you will be getting EY CAFTA’s Certificate of
Participation in your chosen stream. This will reflect that you have gone through
advanced learning material and received training by EY professionals pertaining to that
stream.

2. What is a case and how does it work?


- A case is a written description of a business challenge or opportunity, typically involving a real
business case, in need of a new strategic direction. Case competitions make this method of
learning more realistic by challenging you to work and think in a problem-solution direction.

3. Who can participate in the case championship?


- If you are an undergraduate student across any stream, you are eligible to participate in the
undergrad case championship. For MBAs, you are eligible to participate in the business school
case championship.

4. When are registration for case championship opening?


- Registrations for both undergraduate and business school competition open on 1 August 2020.

5. Are there any discounts available on registration fee?


- There are no discounts available.

6. When will the registrations for the case championship end?


- Registrations end date:
o For undergraduate students: 25 September 2020
o For postgraduate students: 25 August 2020

7. What is the registration fee?


- For postgraduate candidates:
o INR 5,000 (Individual)
o INR 9,000 (team of two)
- For undergraduate candidates
o INR 2,500 (Individual)
o INR 4,500 (team of two)

8. If I’m registering in a team of two then how will I make the payment?
- Registration amount for a team of two:
o For postgraduate candidates: INR 9,000
o For undergraduate candidates: INR 4500
- The above amount can be paid under “team” category by either of the team member on the
registration portal.
- Follow the process given in Question 9.
9. How do I register for the case championship?
- To register, click on register now in your respective sections (undergraduate or postgraduate).
- After clicking on the link, the payment page will open. You are expected to fill in the details on
the payment page.
- You will get an option to:
o Select the stream in which you’re participating
o Type of participation (individual or team)
- After selecting the stream and participation type, make the payment for the competition (this
is the registration fee for entering in the competition.
Note: (1) You can select more than one streams for participating. You can also email at
cafta@in.ey.com to check on the process. (2) After you register for the process, you will be
contacted to submit your identity card as a proof of your eligibility.

10. What are the streams?


- For undergraduate and postgraduate students, case questions will be based on specific areas.
The case questions are challenging problem statements that practitioners within these areas
are attempting to solve. Streams are defined separately for undergraduate and postgraduate
students.
- Each of the streams are tagged to certain learning collaterals which include handbooks and
recorded webinar sessions. This will help you get trained in the area you’d want to solve the
case study before the release of the case question.

11. Can you help me understand what learning collaterals I will be getting in each stream?
- You will be provided with the following collaterals:
o Written handbooks that provide practical knowledge around application of concepts in
finance and treasury in the space that you choose.
o Recorded videos where EY professionals will explain these concepts from practitioner’s
point of view. For example: within the data analytics stream, latest BI tools will be
introduced to help an individual solve cases related to that area.

12. How many case questions will be there?


- One case question will be announced for each stream. Depending on the stream you have
registered for, you will solve the question for that stream.

13. Why are streams defined differently for undergraduate and postgraduate students?
- The difference in streams is dependent on the level of depth and expertise that is required to
solve the case question of each stream.
- Evaluators will also keep in mind the differences while evaluating.

14. Am I eligible if I do not have any prior knowledge of any stream or no prior case experience?
- Prior knowledge of a stream or case experience is NOT a requirement. You are eligible as long
as you have a valid college ID (undergraduate or postgraduate) to show as proof during
onboarding.
- To bring everyone to the same level of understanding, we will be providing you with learning
collaterals that will ensure better understanding of the area before you solve the question.

15. I have registered for the competition, but I have not received any learning collaterals. What should
I do?

16. If I register on the last day, then will I have enough time to go through the learning material?
- We believe it will take you 8-10 hours to go through the learning material. It has been our
experience so far that this is the average time taken for a student to prepare for the short
quiz.
- Please make note that you will be giving the short quiz on 30 August (for postgraduate
candidates) and 3 October (for undergraduate candidates).

17. What kind of work am I expected to do on the competition?


- During the tenure of case championship, candidates will be provided with learning collaterals.
You are expected to go through this learning material and understand how to apply traditional
concepts in finance and treasury.
- You will then be asked to take a short quiz relating to the stream you’re participating in.
- Based on the results of the quiz, if you’re in the top 45 teams, you will move to round 2. In this
round, you will be sent a case question relating to your stream that you will have to solve. To
solve this, you need to come up with the best possible solution according to you for the given
problem statement.
- As a solution, you are expected to build a PPT response and a video response that you will have
to submit within stipulated time.

18. Can you give me the details of the short quiz? How much time will I take to prepare for it?
- The short quiz will be conducted on 30 August (for postgraduate candidates) and 3 October (for
undergraduate candidates). This will be an hour-long online quiz comprising 30 objective/MCQ
questions. These questions will be a mix of practical and theoretical questions based on the
learning collaterals provided to you.
- We believe it will take you 8-10 hours to go through the learning material and prepare yourself
for the quiz.

19. When will the results be announced for round 1?


- Results for the short quiz will be announced on 1 September (for postgraduate candidates) and
5 October (for undergraduate candidates).

20. What is the passing percentage?


- Depending on the marks scored:
o Undergraduate: Top 45 teams will be selected for round 2 (15 teams for each stream).
o Postgraduate: Top 45 teams will be selected for round 2 (15 teams for each stream).

21. What if I don’t make it to the top 45 teams?


- If you don’t make it to the top 45 teams but have completed the quiz, you will get a CAFTA
Certificate of Participation in your respective stream, which will clearly reflect that you have
participated the competition and completed hours of learning in the area.

22. In case I’m participating in a team. How will my short quiz be scored?
- In case of a team, the best of two scores will be considered.

23. If I’m not selected for round 2, then how will I be informed?
- Results for the short quiz will be announced on 1 September (for postgraduate candidates) and
5 October (for undergraduate candidates).
- You will be informed through email on the email address with which you registered for the
competition.

24. I have not been selected in round 2 and have not received my certificate? What should I do?

25. How are the top 45 teams split between streams?


- Top 45 teams will be selected for round 2 consisting of 15 teams from each stream.

26. What type of time commitment would I look at if I were to participate?


- You would need approximately 8-10 hours of training time and 15-20 hours to prepare your
case study solution.

27. How many case questions will be there?


- One case question will be released per stream.

28. Who will design the case question?


- CSC (Case Study Committee) will be designing the case questions.

29. Who all are a part of Case Study Committee (CSC)?


- EY professionals are a part of CSC.

30. Will I get to interact with CSC at any point?


- CSC will be doing webinars to discuss the expectations around case championship.
- Please send an email at cafta@in.ey.com to check on the upcoming webinars.

31. How difficult will the case be?


- It will be difficult enough to keep the competition fair and reasonable. The level of difficulty will
also vary for a postgraduate and an undergraduate candidate. Evaluators will also keep in mind
these differences while evaluating the case.

32. Is there one correct answer to a case?


- A case study is a complex situation that needs some type of resolution. Accordingly, there are
multiple answers possible. Please include with your submission a bulleted list regarding the
outcome of the case as this will give the judges additional information for which to make a
decision. You will also be expected to develop a video presentation of your solution.

33. What do I need to submit for my case solution?


- You need to submit a PPT and a video.
- PPT should not be more than 10 slides.
- Video should not be more than 10 minutes. Through the video, you must explain the entire
thought process behind the case, the challenges you resolved and the limitations of the study.

34. My PPT is good but I’m not confident in making the video? Is it necessary?
- Yes, it is necessary. The top three teams from UG and PG will be selected to present their
case in front of some of the big names in the industry. So, you are expected to be articulate
and presentable.

35. Is there a template that we must follow for building our PowerPoint presentation?
- When the case question will be released, you will receive a template along with instructions
from our side. This is simply to ensure standardization.

36. When I’m doing the video recording, what should I keep in mind?
- Keep your camera in landscape mode.
- Ensure that your full face is visible.
- Ensure that the lighting is adequate and there is no glare.
- Be dressed appropriately in formals.
- The video should not be more than 10 minutes.
- Through the video, you have to explain the entire thought process behind the case, the
challenges you resolved and the limitations of the study.

37. How will the case study answers be judged?


- A CSC consisting of professionals from EY has been created to serve as competition
judges. Each of the committee members will individually rate the case studies and the votes
will be tallied. The information will be sent to the committee for final deliberation (and to break
any ties) and the winner will be announced.
- Marks will be allocated to each team on the submission on:
1. Clarity of thought: It is the ability to think clearly and make others understand your thought
process well.
2. Content and writing style: The content should be written appropriately in a presentable
manner. Please stick to the template we will be providing for the case solution.
3. Depth of research: You need to go through various sources (like academic journals, company
websites and so on) to know the Industry sentiments, approaches undertaken by different
companies for consulting cases and so on.
4. Practical applicability and relevance of solution: The solution should be a feasible and logical
one. Through the video, you must explain the entire thought process behind the case, the
challenges you resolved and the limitations of the study.
5. Presentation:
o PowerPoint presentation (As per the template shared with the case question)
o Video submitted : For the video, we will also be judging on the basis of your presentation
skills, how articulate you are, clarity in speech and the points raised.

38. What if I have participated in two streams and I’m selected for round 2 in both? Will I get more
time?
- No extra time will be given in such a case.

39. What if I participated in two streams but I’m selected for round 2 in only one stream?
- You will be getting the case question for the stream you are selected in. You will get EY CAFTA
certificate of participation for the other one.

40. During the case study if I have any doubts, who should I contact?

41. When will the result of round 2 be announced?


- Winners for round 2 will be announced on 30 September (for postgraduate candidates) and 5
November (for undergraduate candidates)

42. How many winners will be declared?


- Total 9 teams will win in undergraduate and 9 in postgraduate segment
- There will be three teams (winner from each stream) from UG and three teams (winner from
each stream) from PG - who will be declared as CAFTA Case Championship 2020 winners.
- Next 6 teams (from UG and PG each) will be awarded the opportunity to do a live project.

43. What will I receive if I don’t qualify for round 2?


- You will have access to the learning materials but will not be given a certificate of participation.

44. What will I get if I qualify for round 2 but don’t win?
- If you don’t qualify any round but have completed the assessment, you will get Certificate of
Participation in your respective stream, which will clearly reflect that you have gone through
the learning material in that area and also indicate the rounds you have qualified.

45. What will the winning teams receive?


- EY CAFTA Certificate of Participation in your respective stream, which will clearly reflect that
you have gone through the learning material in that area and received training by EY
professionals pertaining to that stream.
- Both in undergraduate and postgraduate teams, following will be the winners:

- Opportunity to present your solution at EY CAFTA Leadership event to EY Professionals and
industry experts.
- Opportunity to work on one-month live project (flexibility in the choice of month, applicable
up to six months) and get a live project certificate.

46. How will I receive the gifts if I’m in the winning team?
- You will be asked to fill a form to provide us the details for delivery. Feel free to email us to

47. What is EY CAFTA Showcase?


- EY CAFTA Leadership Event or CAFTA Showcase: National leadership conference and felicitation
ceremony is a large-scale virtual conference, which will be organized covering the following:
o A platform to present your solution to the case study to leaders, experts and working
professionals.
o Panel discussions and interaction with professionals on contemporary issues, emerging
technology trends in finance and treasury.

48. When will the leadership conference happen?


- Once the winners for round 2 are declared, a date will be announced tentatively in the month
of December 2020 or January 2021 for the leadership conference.

49. Will the conference happen offline/online?


- EY CAFTA Leadership Event or CAFTA Showcase: National leadership conference and felicitation
ceremony is a large scale virtual conference.

50. What is a live project?


- Live project is a consulting project you will be working on alongside EY professionals, in a group
of four to five people.
- The current cases EY professionals are working on will be allocated to you to work on. You will
be given communication on different aspects like expectations of the corporate, scope of work,
expected deliverables, etc.
- In the end, you will be designing a PPT as a final submission.
- You will also be sent the final solution that is presented to the client. So, you can then match
the final deck presented to your own to see where you can improve.

51. Can I choose the month in which I want to do the live project?
- Yes, you have the flexibility in the choice of month. This is applicable up to six months.
