Self-Regulation
This Theory focuses on how people explain their successes and failures. It puts all the many
thousands of answers and explanations given by performers into just three categories:
•Stability (consistent or variable)
•Locus of causality (external or internal)
•Locus of control (not under our own control)

Self-Efficacy
• Self-efficacy is the belief that you are
capable of carrying out a specific task
or of reaching a specific goal. Note
that the belief and the action or goal
are specific.

• Self-efficacy has three main effects:

• Choice of tasks
• Persistence at tasks
• Response to failure
Self-determination theory
• This theory suggests that
people are motivated to
grow and change by three
innate and universal
psychological needs and are
able to become self-
determined when their
needs for competence,
connection, and autonomy
are fulfilled
Self-Regulation Theory
• A system of conscious personal management that
helps us control what we think, say and do.

• Self-regulation is generally required when there

is a motivational conflict. Ex. Should I run away
from the fire or should I rescue victims of the
fire?

• There are 4 components of Self-Regulation:

• Standards: Of desirable behaivor.
• Motivation: To meet standards.
• Monitoring: Of situations and thoughts that precede
breaking standards.
• Willpower: Internal strength to control urges.

SRT is applied in the following situations :
• Impulse control – Preventing careless actions and financial issues by acting
impulsively.
• Illusion of control – People who are led by internal goals tend to exercise control
over others. They seek control even in places which are beyond them. This leads
to a stressful situation. To cope up with this feeling, they start having illusions of
control.
• Goal attainment and motivation – One can use this theory to regulate their daily
chores and habits to meet a certain goal.

Motivation level is
determined by two
factors, the need to
achieve and the need
to avoid failure
