1 General requirements
1.1 Basic functionality of the portable on-line partial discharge measurement and
temporary monitoring system for various assets
A portable on-line partial discharge measurement and temporary monitoring system for various assets
and shall provide the following functionalities:
- The device must be suitable for multiple assets types, such as generators, motors, power
transformers, cables and accessories
- Sensitive detection of partial discharges based on multi-channel synchronous technology on all
three phases of the asset under test
- The software of the monitoring system shall include both monitoring features (e.g. trending,
alarming) and diagnosis features (e.g. defect localization, time-domain and frequency-domain
signal visualization)
- The monitoring software shall have a user-friendly web interface that can be securely reachable
from any location in the local network
- Intelligent alarming system with proven reliability against transient signals
- Data trending with the possibility of correlating data from multiple locations (of the same phase) in
one display plot
- The system must allow for easy setup, installation and configuration of new and existing assets
under test
- The monitoring capabilities shall store raw and derived data for several months and have an
internal storage of measurement data > 450 GB
- The system shall have gating functions to suppress disturbances/noise.
- The system shall have Partial Discharge source and noise source separation functions through 3-
Phase-Amplitude-Related-Diagram. 3PARD
- There must be the possibility of extension to a 4th channel for UHF measurements.
- The portable system shall be controlled by Diagnostic and Monitoring Software, to perform spot
measurements and longer duration monitoring measurements respectively.
- The operating temperature needs to be in the range of -30 °C … +55 °C
2 Technical requirements
For those cases when more sources of signal are detected at one location, an automated signal
separation based on a multi-channel synchronous technique shall be performed (3-Phase Amplitude
Relation Diagram – 3PARD). The separation technique shall have been commonly used in the field for
more than 15 years and shall be readily accepted by manufacturers and other users.
2.2 Sensors
The sensors installed at the asset shall be used for the PD detection. The sensors are connected to the
acquisition unit with double shielded coaxial cable via IP65 connectors.
The installation of the PD sensors shall not affect the clearances at the asset and shall not endanger in
any way the safe operation of the asset. Existing experience with the sensors shall be provided by the
portable measurement and monitoring system supplier.
The inductive sensors shall enable the PD detection in a frequency range from 80 kHz up to 25 MHz or
above.
The capacitive sensors shall enable the PD detection for voltage levels of 17 kV and 24 kV
The transformer bushing sensors shall enable the PD detection in a frequency range from 16 kHz to 10
MHz .
All sensors shall be designed in such a way that they can be left as a continuous installation at the various
assets and have a simple access point for save measurements or monitoring.
The unit itself must have a rugged design and allow for simple installation.
The PD signals shall be acquired by a four-channel, synchronous, FPGA-based acquisition unit and
processed by a digital band-pass filter which enables the unit to be operated both as a narrow-band and
as a wide-band PD detector. Therefore, the acquisition unit shall be suitable for both conventional (IEC
60270 compliant) and unconventional measurements (outside IEC60270 recommendations). The fourth
channel of the acquisition unit shall enable the improvement of the signal to noise ratio by means of
features, such as, channel gating available in the diagnosis software of the system.
The fourth channel of the acquisition unit can also be used for UHF measurements.
The main characteristics of the acquisition unit shall comply with the following technical data:
The acquisition unit shall be type tested and shall comply with the following standards and environmental
conditions:
- Protection class – IP 65
- Electromagnetic compatibility:
o Emissions:
EN 55011/22:
o Immunity:
EN 61000-6-5: MV/HV substations
- Safety standards – EN61010-1:
- Environmental conditions:
o Operating temperature: -30 °C … +55 °C (-22 °F … +131 °F)
o Storage temperature: -40 °C … +80 °C (-40 °F … +176 °F)
o Humidity: Up to 95 % r.H. (non-condensing)
Additionally, the acquisition unit of the monitoring system shall adhere to the specifications and the
guidelines of the council of the European Community for meeting the requirements of the member states
according to the EMC directive 2004/108/EU, LVD directive 2006/95/EU and the RoHS directive
2011/65/EU.
The monitoring software shall collect the data via an acquisition software component, which can also be
used for detailed diagnosis, when required. The diagnosis software shall have a user-friendly and intuitive
user interface, with the following functionality:
- Quasi integration of the PD signal for the apparent charge calculation; calculation of all other
relevant quantities indicated by IEC 60270 (pulse repetition rate, phase, peak charge etc.)
- Separation of multiple sources of signal based on multi-spectral synchronous technique: 3-Center
Frequency Relation Diagram (3CFRD)
- Separation of multiple sources of signal based on multi-channel synchronous technique: 3-Pulse
Amplitude Relation Diagram (3PARD)
- Automatic recording and replaying of data sets for post processing, including all PD relevant
information for in-depth data analysis
- Visualization of the PRPD patterns of all accessories along one cable phase in one screen
(required for AC voltage after installation testing)
- Channel gating options in order to improve the signal to noise ratio
- Adjustable filter settings
- PD sampling rate of 125 MS/s
With the purchase of the portable on-line partial discharge measurement and temporary monitoring
system for various assets the following services shall be available:
