Virtual Starfish Dash 5K Run/Walk

 The Starfish Dash 5K Run/Walk is a free, official Fiesta event, where the San
Antonio community can learn more about chromosome 18 conditions, discover
community resources at the health and wellness fair, and participate in family-
friendly activities, including a 5K run/walk. Due to COVID-19, the Starfish Dash
will be moved to online where community members can learn about health and
wellness resources available to them in a comfortable, safe environment while
also raising funds and awareness for the Chromosome 18 Clinical Research
Center. The Starfish Dash 5K Run/Walk will have a live kick-off event on
November 14, 2020 at 8:30 am, but participants will be able to complete the 5K
at the time most convenient to them leading up to and following the kick-off.

Chromosome 18 aims for an annual increase in participation and satisfaction for

the Starfish Dash. To achieve this, we use donations such as The Awesome
Foundation sponsorship in order to improve participant experience by improving
the resources available and growing the health and wellness fair. Donations also
help us keep the event free which further incentivizes community participation.
This is integral to the success of not only the event, but also Chromosome 18, as
attendees will have access to a wide variety of health and wellness resources
virtually available as part of the event. Ensuring a high-quality event allows
Chromosome 18 to ensure that it is meeting the needs of the community while
working to raise awareness for chromosome 18 conditions and research.

Funds received through this grant would go directly toward keeping this event
free of charge and open to all community members. Funds will also be used to
help improve the experience for Chromosome 18 families while staying
connected for this virtual event as well as increasing the number of health and
wellness vendor participants to all attendees. This funding will be used to
continue our mission to improve the lives of individuals with chromosome 18
abnormalities.

The Chromosome 18 Registry & Research Society (Chromosome 18) and the
Chromosome 18 Clinical Research Center (CRC) were founded by Dr. Jannine
Cody when her daughter, Elizabeth Cody, was diagnosed with a chromosome 18
abnormality. Dr. Cody made it her mission to support families affected by
chromosome 18 conditions. Since then, Chromosome 18 and the CRC have
been helping individuals with chromosome 18 abnormalities through
community building, expanding education, and advancing research.

In what way will this project benefit the San Antonio community at
large?

Chromosome 18 Registry and Research Society primarily services the San

Antonio community, helping individuals affected by chromosome 18 disabilities
get the support, treatment, and resources they need to overcome obstacles they
face so they may lead healthy and productive lives. The Starfish Dash is one of
the largest fundraisers of the year for Chromosome 18. This event raises both
awareness and funds for Chromosome 18 and the Chromosome 18 Clinical
Research Center. the only research center in the world which focuses on
chromosome 18 abnormalities and providing treatment recommendations for
both families and physicians.

With funds raised through this event, Chromosome 18 provides individuals

diagnosed with chromosome 18 abnormalities direct access to invaluable
resources. This includes connecting families with educational resources and
support networks, hosting educational events, and funding research for
treatment and preventative care options. Raised funds during this event will help
keep the CRC funded, which will in turn continue to benefit the individuals who
rely on Chromosome 18.

Is there a deadline for this project?

The event will start on 11/14/2020. Since it's a virtual event, participants can
complete the 5K at whatever time most convenient for them leading up to and
following the kick-off.
