Steel Bridges
The British Constructional Steelwork Association Ltd is holding a
Conference on “Steel Bridges” on Wednesday 4 December 2002 at One
Great George Street, London SW1. The Conference is supported by
Corus Group plc, Highways Agency, and the Steel Construction
Institute. The objective of the “Steel Bridges” Conference, which is
aimed at designers, main contractors and steelwork contractors, is to
review the latest developments in the design and construction of steel
bridges.
The Conference will commence at 1400 hrs in the Telford Theatre and
conclude with a buffet supper at 1800 hrs in the Great Hall. The topics to
be covered in the Conference include:
• Good practice in design and construction
• Selection of appropriate steelwork contractors
• The Highways Agency’s new procurement procedures for steel
bridges
• Project case studies
• Technical updates - materials, design and specification
The project case studies will cover a range of bridge types, each
illustrating various aspects steel design and construction. All delegates
will receive a copy of the new book Steel Bridges, to be published by
BCSA in December, and a copy of the Steel Bridge Group Guidance
Notes, published by SCI.
The aim of the new Steel Bridges book is to provide guidance upon the
practical aspects of fabrication which influence the efficient design of
steel bridges. Extensive consultation has taken place with experts in the
design, fabrication and erection of steel bridges and therefore this
publication represents a compilation of many years’ knowledge and
experience. Steel designs based on these concepts have proved
competitive against more traditional designs in concrete and steel.
References are made to BS 5400 Part 3 and Part 6 and their application
in practice is demonstrated. Examples are given of “good” deck layouts
and cross sectional arrangements, fabrication details and economic
design solutions to specific bridge requirements.
The Steel Bridge Group Guidance Notes is a series of individual
separate notes, plus glossary, collected in a hardback ring binder, that
provides guidance to the steel bridge designer. The Notes draw on the
expertise of the members of the Steel Bridge Group.
After the Conference there will be a hot buffet supper served in the Great
Hall. The evening will end at 1930hrs. The Conference fee is £95 plus
VAT (£111.63) per person. This includes attendance at the Conference,
documentation, a copy of Steel Bridges and the Steel Bridge Group
Guidance Notes, refreshments and supper.
