Personal risk assessments

The Trust is undertaking a personal risk assessment on certain groups of staff who may be
at a greater risk of being seriously affected by COVID-19. The groups which have been
identified are:

• Pregnant colleagues.
• Extremely clinically vulnerable colleagues who are currently shielding.
• Male colleague who are over 55 years of age.
• Female colleagues who are over 65 years of age.

Line managers have been informed and will contact staff to conduct the welfare discussion.

15/07/2020 teamHDFT Staff Bulletin -... - ALI, Abid (HARROGATE AND DISTRICT NHS FOUNDA...

In order to support staff, the Trust is monitoring the completion rates – these are displayed
in the below tables.

15/07/2020 teamHDFT Staff Bulletin -... - ALI, Abid (HARROGATE AND DISTRICT NHS FOUNDA...

A welfare discussion needs to take place with anybody who is clinically vulnerable. This
means with one or more of the following underlying health conditions:

chronic (long-term) mild to moderate respiratory diseases, such as asthma, chronic

obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), emphysema or bronchitis
chronic heart disease, such as heart failure
chronic kidney disease
chronic liver disease, such as hepatitis
chronic neurological conditions, such as Parkinson’s disease, motor neurone
disease, multiple sclerosis (MS), or cerebral palsy
diabetes
a weakened immune system as the result of certain conditions or medicines they are
taking (such as steroid tablets)
being seriously overweight (a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or above)
Please do not be alarmed if you fall into any of these categories, the Trust simply wants to
ensure that all precautions that could be taken are being taken. If staff fall into any of these
categories or have concerns regarding personal circumstances and COVID-19 please
contact line managers in the first instance.

Reminder - face masks

There has been feedback that boxes of face masks are being taken from mask stations at
Harrogate District Hospital.

This action reduces the supply for colleagues around the hospital at locations where they
are needed and in places where supplies must be retained for the protection of colleagues,
patients and visitors.

Please, at mask stations, only take one mask to be used as intended.

If masks are required for a particular area, please contact the PPE Team on 7966/7967 or
email hdft.ppe@nhs.net

Mandatory essential training

Most mandatory and essential training (MEST) was paused in March as the volume of
Covid-19-related work in the Trust increased. As part of the recovery process, there are
plans to restart training in a phased manner over the next couple of months.

Where possible training should be carried out using remote delivery. All face to face
training will take place with distancing measures in place; where this is not possible due to
the activity involved, a risk assessment will be undertaken and mitigating measures
identified. The Learning and Development team will be working through the current
bookings gradually over the next few weeks and contacting trainers and those attending
the training sessions to confirm they will be going ahead. If you have any queries please

email the Learning and Development team on hdft.learninganddevelopment1@nhs.net

Please be patient as the team are currently extremely busy organising the restart; they will
respond as soon as possible.

Line manager webinars

Thank you to colleagues who have so far joined the weekly webinars on MS Teams.
Colleagues are continuing these weekly for the next couple of weeks, and after that
will schedule more sessions if they are felt to be valuable.

The next few dates are listed below.

The sessions are aimed at supporting line managers to ask questions and clarify issues
regarding HR practice.

Understandably, much of this will relate to working during a pandemic, but the group isn't
restricted to this - any aspect of HR practice is up for discussion, with a view to supporting
the workforce as much as possible.

New defibrillators coming to a resuscitation trolley near

you!

The Resuscitation Department are deploying new defibrillators across Harrogate District
Hospital later this month. It is necessary to change the defibrillators as the ones currently
used are old and in need of replacing.

The Trust is moving to a two tiered defibrillation system - there will continue to be one
make of defibrillator, however two types of defibrillator will now be in use depending on the
https://email.nhs.net/owa/#viewmodel=ReadMessageItem&ItemID=AAMkAGU2YjViMDY3LTUxYzItNDU0Ni05OGVhLTFiNWM5OTcwOWY2MQ… 6/16
15/07/2020 teamHDFT Staff Bulletin -... - ALI, Abid (HARROGATE AND DISTRICT NHS FOUNDA...

patient groups being cared for and the type of cardiac arrest seen. The make of
defibrillators is the same so they will look and sound familiar.

In most wards and departments the plan will be to

use a Lifepak 1000 AED, this is very easy to use
and allows ward/department colleagues and the
resuscitation team to deliver a shock quickly if
indicated and more importantly will emphasize the
importance chest compressions, breaths and
timing. The ease of use and simplicity will help to
focus on these and reduce stress and
anxiety. These will also be the defibrillators in use
in non-clinical areas such as the canteen, main entrance etc so colleagues will be familiar
and used to using them if the need arises.

Some areas of the hospital will have the Lifepak 20e which is a newer version of the
defibrillator currently in use. There is little difference to notice in the day to day use of this
defibrillator compared to the current Lifepak 20s, it will still default to AED mode when
turned on to enable it to be used by anyone trained to use it in an emergency. However it
has additional benefits such as end tidal CO2 monitoring and much improved data capture
to assist debriefing.

The Resuscitation Department will provide information, training and support to help make
this transition as safe and smooth as possible by visiting ward areas, providing information
in the resuscitation trolley folders and on the intranet site. The defibrillators will be available
to look at during the Basic Life Support drop-in session on Thursday 16 July and at a stand
outside Herriot’s canteen on Friday 17 July.

New defibrillators for community locations will be replaced following the deployment in
Harrogate District Hospital and will be arranged with individual areas to ensure the
equipment is accessible.

The Resuscitation Department would like to ask that the upcoming change is
highlighted at ward/department meetings, handovers and safety huddles please so
that colleagues are prepared as well as possible and have the opportunity to seek
advice if they would like.

For further information please contact the Resuscitation Department on 01423
