THE ARTICLES
1. THE INDEFINITE ARTICLE “a – an”
(un/una)

A. We use a before words that begin with a


consonant sound.
EXAMPLES:
- a classroom
- a lion
- a factory
- a big city

B. We use an before words that begin with a


vowel sound.

EXAMPLES:

- an academy
- an exercise
- an apple
- an Italian boy

Watch out!
We have exceptions:
When u is pronunced yu at the beginning
of a word we use a not an. For example:

a university / a universe / a union / a unit

When h is silent at the beginning of a


word we use an not a. For example:

an hour / an honest man

2. THE DEFINITE ARTICLE “the”
(el/la/los/las)

A. In English there is only one form of the


definite article. It doesn’t change for
singular, plural or gender
EXAMPLES:
- the book - the books
- the boy - the girl
