Steps to a Rational
Christmas Shopping
(using Behavioral Economics Principles)
by FQ Mom Rose Fres Fausto
Do you shop at the last minute? Or on an empty stomach? Do you shop alone or with companions? Do you have a
list? Do you start with big-ticket gift items?
Chances are, you already have your set ways of doing your holiday shopping. I wish to share with you some steps
you may consider so you don’t blow your savings or exhaust yourself to celebrate the birth of the Baby in the manger. I
don’t think He’d like that to happen to you. I guess He would want you to be a bit more rational in doing your Christmas
shopping. So let’s apply some Behavioral Economics principles in the steps.
Behavioral Economics (B.E.) is a relatively new field that is the fusion of Economics and Psychology. It highlights the
social, psychological, and emotional aspects in the actual human behavior, as opposed to the rational (always maximizing
utility and minimizing cost) assumed in traditional Economics.
In today’s lingo, what we’re trying to do is to hack our predictably emotional shopping behavior so that we don’t end
up miserable after the holiday season. Here are the steps.
1.Have a shopping plan. Treat it like a mission with time, strategy, and end goal all listed down. Choose your
shopping venue well to avoid driving from one place to another. Time is a valuable resource. Calendar a shopping
appointment with yourself. In B.E., this is called a commitment device. This will help you prepare mentally for the
event, instead of doing it on a whim.

2.Sleep well, eat well. Have a restful sleep at night, then have a good breakfast taken at a strategic time. That is, not
too early so as not to be hungry after only an hour of shopping. Protect yourself from the perils of the B.E. principle
called ego depletion. It is the human tendency to make irrational decisions when we’re in a “depleted state” (i.e.
hungry, angry, etc.)
3.Leave the credit card. If you’re not yet disciplined in the use of your mighty plastic, don’t bring it. The B.E. principle
called pain of paying states that we feel the pain more when we pay with cash compared to signing those charge
slips. What’s more, shopping with cash automatically puts a stop when the cash supply runs out. But if you want
to bring your credit card just as a “security blanket,” agree on a trigger with your spouse or FQ Buddy, similar to a
password that should be activated by both of you before you can start using it. I’ll leave that up to your creativity.
4.Self-affirmations before shopping. B.E. studies show that when we remind ourselves of our positive traits before
we go shopping, we tend to shop less. This, my friend, is the very basis of retail therapy. Someone who feels
terrible would need more stuff to feel better about herself. The problem with this therapy is that it seems to be
the opposite of the meaning of the word therapy (treatment). At best, it’s palliative. But of course, retailers don’t
want to use that word.
5.Dress up well. We always hear the advice to shop in comfy clothes but please don’t overdo it. You still have to
look good (comfortably so). Why? Salespeople are only human and they have a tendency to treat well-dressed
customers well, and do the opposite to those who are not. I know a story of someone who was not treated well by
the saleslady because she wasn’t properly dressed. To show her financial capability, she exaggerated her purchases
on that day. So we see two irrational behaviors at work here. Unfortunately, the cost was carried by the customer.
6.Schedule a break. Hungry stomachs and tired feet make irrational decisions—i.e., ego depletion discussed in no. 2.
7.Shop alone. We are affected by our companion such that when she starts buying stuff that’s not within our budget,
we might do the same. This is called mob/herd/pack mentality—our tendency to be influenced by peers in our
behavior. Moreover, there’s also pressure to make the purchase right away if someone’s waiting for us.
8.Stick to the plan. Detours will most probably increase your purchases, or at the very least, waste your time.
9.Buy the less expensive items first. There is a B.E. principle called anchoring, which is the human tendency to use
the number first suggested to us as a basis or anchor (no matter how unrelated the number is). So, if we’ve already
made a big-ticket purchase at the start, chances are, it would be easier for us to purchase higher-priced goods after.
10.Record your purchases. Once you get home, or as soon as practicable, update your Excel file and input the items
you purchased together with prices and tick off the items done. Ticking off gives a sense of accomplishment. If
you’re not yet done, plan your next trip and follow the ten steps all over again.

Last WORD
If you seek God first, increase will happen. Because God will add “all these things” to your life.
I see this in my own life. As a young teenager, I put God first. When I did this, at the back of my mind, I resigned myself
to a life of poverty, to mediocrity, to a very narrow religious world. Because I thought that was what being religious meant.
Here I was, expecting that my life would become boring, dull, and monotonous. I guess that was how my classmates
saw me. My name, “BO,” must have meant “boring and old,” because they saw me go to the chapel and read the Bible
every day.
But the very opposite happened.
When I was thirteen, I started serving God. I started preaching, composing songs, playing the guitar, leading worship,
organizing events, writing skits, raising funds . . .
When I was fourteen, I started the Light of Jesus, worked for the poor, and lived in the slums.
When I was fifteen, I was already crisscrossing the archipelago, sharing the Good News.
When I was sixteen, I won a Bible quiz that made me travel the world.
I remember that school year, our English teacher asked everyone to report to class about “What I Did Last Summer.”
My classmates said the usual stuff that kids say: “Last summer, I watched a movie.” Or, “Last summer, I played
basketball.” Or, “Last summer, I went to the beach.”
When I gave my class report, I said, “Last summer, for forty-one days, I traveled to twenty-one cities in Israel and all
over Europe—all by myself. I went to the Sea of Galilee where Jesus calmed the storm. I visited Mt. Calvary where Jesus was
crucified. And I entered the empty tomb where Jesus rose from the dead. After that, I went to the Vatican where the Pope
lived. I checked out the Eiffel tower in Paris. I ate pizza in Venice, saw the red light district in Amsterdam, and ate sausages
in Frankfurt. I had to go through a lot of dangers, too. I almost got bullied in Austria, almost got robbed in France, almost
got molested in Germany, and almost froze to death in Zurich, Switzerland . . .”
You can just imagine the reaction of my classmates. Everyone’s jaw was on the floor.
To this day, my life is exciting.

Believe me, if you put God first, your life will be exciting, too.
I urge you: Put God first. And He will add all these things into your life.
My Spiritual Error
If you look at history, you’ll see that different religions have spawned their own
fanatics. What are fanatics? Fanatics are people who focus on their religion and forget
everything else. Sometimes, they forget their families, or their health, or their work, or
their recreation—for the sake of their religion or their church.
Fanaticism is NOT the will of God. Throughout history, religious fanatics cause so
much pain, so much murder, so much war . . .
All religions will have their fanatics—Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Budhism . . .
Sadly, many times, the fanatics become the models for their religion. They become the
religion’s superheroes. They become the religion’s benchmark. And everyone else will
measure their lives against this extreme benchmark—and, thus, find their lives horribly
inadequate.
But it’s not religions per se that create fanatics. It’s the twin evils of ignorance and
insecurity that create fanatics.
Misunderstanding Jesus
It’s easy to become a fanatic if you select certain Bible verses and misinterpret them. For example, it’s easy to
misunderstand Jesus when He said, “If anyone comes to Me and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and
children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be My disciple” (Luke 14:26).
Why did Jesus use the word “hate?” A lot of misguided people have taken that verse and have caused so much
heartache in families.
The Greek word for “hate” used here is miseo, and Bible scholars say miseo can also mean “love less.” In other words,
Put God first before your family. (The newer Bible versions reflect this second meaning.)
Jesus could never have meant “hate your family” because all over the Bible, God says, “Children, obey your parents,”
and “Husbands, love your wife the way Christ loved the Church,” and “Wives, submit to your husbands . . .” (Here’s a basic
rule of reading the Bible: Let Scripture interpret Scripture.) According to Paul in the book of First Timothy, you can’t be a
pastor, elder, or deacon if you’re not a good husband and a good father.
Imagine if one day, I called my two sons and told them, “Benedict and Francis, I want your 100 percent focus on me
and me alone. I want you to attend to my every need. Forget about your school and forget about ever getting a job and
forget about ever getting married. Focus on me, your dad, alone.”
Sick, right? If I did that to my kids, it means I’m a very selfish, emotionally unstable, insecure, and neurotic father.
But some people picture God to be like that. They picture God telling us, “Focus on Me and forget everything else.”
If God did that, then there’s something wrong. We’re worshiping an abusive, selfish, and neurotic God.
Alas, some people relate to that kind of God.

Faulty Logic
Many years ago, I attended a huge archdiocesan Charismatic gathering. In that prayer meeting, a leader
shared this story:
One day, his daughter talked to him and said, “Daddy, it’s my eighteenth birthday this Friday. I know Friday is also
your prayer meeting day. But just this once, can you skip your prayer meeting so that I can have dinner with you?”
And he answered his daughter, “Sorry, what you ask for is impossible. God comes first in my life.”
And the crowd actually applauded him. I didn’t. I couldn’t.
I’m not saying we shouldn’t put top priority on our spiritual activities. We
should. For example, I always tell people to commit to The Feast each week. Don’t
let a little rain stop you from coming. Don’t let a little late-night party on Saturday
stop you from coming. Yes, you need to put God first.
But the Charismatic leader’s example was absurd. There are fifty-two prayer
meetings in a year. Your daughter celebrates her eighteenth birthday once in a
lifetime.
Let me point out his faulty logic.
First of all, the prayer meeting is NOT equal to God. The church is NOT equal
to God. The ministry is NOT equal to God.
It’s because of this fanaticism that there’s such a thing called as PKS or
“Pastor Kid’s Syndrome.” It’s so common, they invented a name for it. They’ve noticed that some pastor’s kids rebel against
religion. Why? One reason is the kids end up resenting God for stealing away their parents from them. (Misunderstanding
the word “hate” in Luke 14:26 is deadly.)
But God did not take away their parents from them. It was these parents who imagined their God at war with their
kids. Which is insane.
When my first son was born, holding him in my arms, I told myself, “From now on, I’m a part-time preacher, and a
part-time writer, and a part-time entrepreneur—but a full-time dad.” If I succeed in everything else but fail as a father, I fail.
In my spiritual journey, I’ve realized that God does not call us to be FANATICS; He calls us to be FRIENDS.
God does not call us to escape the world and reject it; God calls us to engage the world and redeem it.
What is the opposite of fanaticism? Balance.
At this stage of my life, I’ve finally discovered the blessing of balance. Which goes to show that I’m now an old soul.
(Just my soul; my body is still young!) Because spiritual thinkers say that one sure sign of maturity is that you realize that
balance is everything. As Thomas Merton said, “Happiness is not about intensity but balance.”
Let me now talk about how balance applies to our finances.
1. Faith

Many religious people worship a fanatical God who is impossible to please. No matter what they do, He
is always angry, or irritated, or annoyed, or offended.
I’m sorry, but that’s not my God.
My God is a God who—even before I do anything good—is already celebrating my goodness. A God who really, really,
really likes me.
2. Fire
You’re rich if you’ve discovered your life purpose, your God-ordained mission—and you’re fulfilling it every day.
You’re rich if you know you’re living your destiny.
3. Family
You’re very rich if you have abundant love in your family. The greatest investment in the world isn’t business, real
estate, or the stock market; The greatest investment in the world is to spend time with your family.
My weekly schedule revolves around dates. I have a weekly “romantic date” with my wife. I have a weekly “boys
date” with my sons. I have weekly “family date” with my wife and kids. And I have a weekly “extended family date” with all
my sisters and their husbands and their children. My life is so rich because I’m rich in my family life.
4. Friends
You’re very rich if you have faithful friends—friends you love and friends who love you.
To have this kind of wealth, you need to do two things:
First, choose to be a friend. Be a phenomenal friend—and you’ll attract
phenomenal friends, too.
Be a person of class.
I’ve met these people. You feel God’s love in them. When people talk to
you, you don’t text on your phone. You give them your undivided attention.
You also give uncommon courtesies such as opening doors and going out of
your way to greet people. When you’re eating at the table, you serve them
before filling your own plate.
When you speak, people experience God’s love. As the Bible says, “Let
your conversation be always full of grace” (Colossians 4:6).
Second, choose your friends. Drop people who abuse you or don’t
respect you or look down on you. Look for people who lift you up and bring out the best in you.
Don’t just accept the most available people; attract the most abundant people.
One of the greatest treasures in life are your friends.
5. Fitness
6. Faculties
By the mere fact that you’re attending The Feast, you’re enriching your mind. Not only the messages
at The Feast itself, but at The Feast, you’re constantly bombarded with various ways of enriching your mind:
You’ve got books to read, seminars to attend, small groups to join, and ministries that will make you learn.
7. Fun
8. Finances

Are you looking for strong connections?
Here’s where you can connect with the
Source of Miracles.
Hi!
A few weeks ago, while talking a brief walk in the mall, I managed to overhear a few teenagers grumbling about
the Wi-Fi connection.
“I’m going to die! There’s no Internet connection here!” one of them said.
“Let’s go to another mall. I hate it here. I can’t even post in IG!” another said.
They kept grumbling about the slow connection, and about how they can’t check their comments and likes on
social media, and about how they’re going to just “die” without Internet.
It made me think.
Their concerns are legitimate, but not in the way you might think.
Hear me out.
But it made me wonder why they were so desperate for it. What do Facebook, Instagram, Viber, and all other
social media platforms give us anyway? Why do we spend so much time connected to the Internet?
People hunger for connection. They want it so bad, they think they’d die without it.
Relationships are so important, and people try to pursue it in different ways. Nowadays, we find it in social
media—in the likes and comments and shares that we receive, in the validation we feel when people say good things
about our posts. We became so addicted to social media because it made us feel “connected.”
But it’s not enough. People are still sad. People are still hungry for connection. People are still desperate for
attention. And they keep finding it, keep searching for it, keep pursuing it in all the wrong places.
I understand that there’s a big hole in our hearts. But this is an emptiness that only solid, real, and true connections
can fill.
People resort to addictions because they need one thing: LOVE.
But I’m addicted to being connected with GOD. With my family. With my dear friend. Real people. Real relationships.
Real connections.
I’d like to invite you to connect with God. Join me, travel with me, journey with me.
Let’s go to where Jesus, the Living God, walked, preached, breathed, lived, and died.
Join Me in a
“Receive Your Miracle”
10-Day Pilgrimage to the Holy Land
February 3 to 13, 2020
Special Bonus:
You’ll Also Join a Feast
Right in the Middle of the Judean Desert!
The first time I set foot in Israel—the Promised Land—I cried. It was so overwhelming to be at the place where
salvation was bought and paid for with the Blood of Christ.
We’ll go to Calvary where Jesus was crucified; Bethlehem, where Jesus was born; and Galilee, where Jesus
preached; and so many other incredible places.
It’s always a joy to see the actual places that you read in the Bible. It’s like the Bible coming alive—in technicolor—
before you.
It’ll be a ball!
Even now, I’m praying for all those who will go with me (I call them pilgrims): May God give my pilgrims a deeper
spiritual connection. May the Lord inspire my pilgrims to new directions in their life. May my pilgrims discover their
mission and embrace it more fully, through this pilgrimage.
I see a pilgrimage as a long holy retreat—except that instead of staying in one place, we’re constantly moving.
We’re moving towards God.
If you want to join me and be my pilgrim, e-mail us at beaconlightevents+pilgrimage@gmail.com now.
