My Spring Internship at The University of Texas at Dallas (UT Dallas)

I am very excited to write about my Spring 2020 internship at The University of Texas at Dallas
(UT Dallas), which is one of the top business schools in Texas and is located in Richardson,
Texas.
During my internship program, I worked in the UT Dallas Office of Admission & Enrollment
Technology. Part of the mission of the Enrollment Management (EM) tech team, “-is to provide
technical solutions, services and support for all enrollment management personnel toward the
goal of recruiting and enrolling excellent students at UT Dallas.”
As an Information Technology and Systems (ITS) student and part-time student worker, I felt
like I was not being challenged enough, so I asked my supervisor if I could help them with any
IT related projects. Fortunately, my supervisor and her team were able to offer me an EM CRM
Data Analyst Internship, which required working closely with Salesforce CRM, data
management tools, and data analysis.
As soon as I received the approval for the internship, I started familiarizing myself with free
resources to learn about my upcoming responsibilities. I signed up for a Salesforce trailhead
account and logged in to UTD’s LinkedIn Learning to find online courses to get certifications in
these areas.
Additionally, my internship included two projects:
1. Weekly Prospect Data Load Process- My role was to perform extract, transform, load
(ETL) process activities. On a weekly basis, I extracted raw, prospective student data
from a source system, transformed the data (format and remove duplicates) and loaded
the data into our destination CRM system to assist recruitment and communication
teams’ efforts in reaching out to prospective students.
Also, I was responsible for creating Weekly Prospect Data Load Process and Data Flow
Diagrams to visualize the process. After completing the diagrams and presenting them to
my supervisor, I felt very proud when I was told that my diagrams will be used across the
teams to explain the process.
2. Fall 2020 Freshman Prospect Data Report- I worked on a report with Fall 2020
Freshman Prospect Data. The report was in Excel format and included tremendous
amounts of CRM data from multiple prospect data sources. I was instructed to explore
the data, note findings and use data visualizations such as charts and graphs to display the
characteristics of the data as well as help answer initial data analysis questions.
Next, I was tasked with identifying any potential duplicates and the data points the
duplicates matched on. Additionally, I transferred my Excel work to a PowerPoint
presentation to present my findings. This project strengthened my data analysis and
Microsoft Excel skills as it included some functions which I wasn’t familiar with.
Lastly, I would like to acknowledge my ITSS Professors Rashmi Varma and Atanas Hansen. I
must admit that, the work I have learned in their classes has helped me a lot throughout this
internship. Also, my UT Dallas Enrollment Management Team, especially Andrea Tapia and
Wray Weldon for your mentorship and guidelines.
