“ADDRESSING CHALLENGES IN DELIVERING REMOTE

LEARNING FOR OFFLINE LEARNERS”
A Webinar
by: Ms. Liza L. Macalinao

Why do we have to continue in learning? What education can do? This period
is a time for us educators to work even harder for Filipino children. If we, the
educators, are experiencing a lot of difficulties in facing this school year
along with the pandemic, how much more will it be for the students? One of the
DepEd Directors came up with ideas to ensure learning continuity: 1. Curriculum
Adjustment, 2. Alignment of Learning Materials, 3. Multiple Learning Modality,
and Teacher and Parent Training. Teachers must be sensitive to equity,
consideration, and concerns. We have varied students that came from different
families that’s why we must include the inclusion. There must be no students who
will be left behind.
Who are those considered as offline learners? These are the students with no
gadgets at home, no internet access, and/or students with poor skills in using
gadgets and online platforms and materials. How are we going to make these types
of students learn? How are we going to reach them out? How are we going to
deliver the lesson content if there’s a lot of students who doesn’t have internet
access (offline learners)? Remote learning provides an opportunity for students
and teachers to remain connected and engaged with the content while staying from
their homes. We, teachers, need to develop challenges such as providing learning
materials designed for those types of students, we need to provide learning
space, have a good communication, and stable monitoring sessions of the progress
the students have made. While lesson designs in Offline Learning are seemingly
similar to what we have been doing in the classroom, the challenges lie on
adjusting our time for due dates, for example, by providing an allowance to any
learning space issues they have at home. This is specially true in giving them
asynchronous tasks. We also have to adjust the simplicity and complexity of our
lesson content and such will be indicated and/or reflected on how well they do on
the weekly assessments we provide them.

Structure of Remote Learning

1. Time – Give time for the students to learn and answer the task. Understand.
2. Communication – Learners must know HOW and WHEN they are expected to
communicate with the teacher.
3. Technology – This can’t just merely rely to the gadgets, we have modules, test
booklets, and other printed materials that will be of great help to most of the
offline learners.
4. Lesson Design – It has to be simple, complete with extensions and remediation
activities. We’re not always present to assist the students learning from home
specially for the offline learners. It must have questions answering lessons they
have learned.

Due to this pandemic, parents will be of great role in the education’s new
normal system. As teachers, we must find ways to make this learning manageable,
purposeful, and engaging with the help of the parents. We can provide guidelines
for parent-student relationship in learning via handouts or any printed
materials, via audio or videos and many other ways to ensure the learning of the
students.

Strengthening the relationship with the learners will be easy if we, the
school, the parents, and the government will collaborate.
