Town of Longboat Key

Press Release
SUBJECT: Force Main Leak
DATE: July 28, 2020, 2:00PM
CONTACT: Tom Harmer, Town Manager
tharmer@longboatkey.org
941-316-1999

• The Town continues sampling and testing of Sarasota Bay waters in accordance with
protocols established by its independent contractor, Environmental Science
Associates (“ESA”).

• On July 27, 2020 the Town received additional test results based upon its standard
sampling protocol for testing that occurred on July 15, 2020 by ESA. Results are
attached and convey some of the lowest bacteriological results to date.

• Copies of the latest test results can be obtained by request from the Town Clerk’s
Office. E-mail Trish Shinkle at tshinkle@longboatkey.org, or call 941-316-1999. (This
due to test results from a 3rd party and not in website ADA format).
• Once sampling and testing in accordance with ESA protocols have been completed,
ESA will provide the Town with a final report, which will be made available to the
public. All activities are coordinated and consistent with direction of FDEP and ESA.

• Forensic evaluations into the cause and extent of the force main leak are ongoing.

Isaac:

As of yesterday, these are the results I have for enterococci and fecal coliform bacteria.  As you can
see, the samples along the transect show the lowest values recorded, on average, over the past
sampling events.  The red lines represent the 10th percentile threshold (TPT) values of 130 and
43/100 ml for enterococci and fecal coliform bacteria, respectively, which are the State of Florida’s
indicator bacteria for Class II waters.  Water quality standards for Class III-marine waters, aka
“swimmable/fishable” are set at higher values than those for Class II waters.

I believe that one more event – next week – coupled with another round of source tracking work
would be all that is required, for this effort.

Thanks,

Dave
