What’s the Matter, Module 1

 Content Standard
The learners demonstrate understanding of ways of sorting
materials and describing them as solid, liquid or gas based on
observable properties.

 Performance Standard

SCIENCE 3
 Learning Competencies
Classify objects and materials as solid, liquid, and gas based on
some observable characteristics.

 Specific Learning Outcomes

 Define what is matter.
 Describe the different properties of matter.

What is matter? (Day 1)

Overview of the Lesson

Observe your surroundings. The world around

you has materials that come in various colors, shapes,
sizes, and textures. Each has mass, weight, and
volume. These materials are called matter. This
module will help you understand the phases,
properties and the classifications of matter and the
changes that materials undergo. So, just keep calm
and let’s begin our Science adventures.

Discussion:
Let’s learn about matter. Matter is all around you. The air you
breathe is made up of made up of matter. The water you drink
and the food you eat are both made up of matter. Your whole
body is also made up of matter.

SCIENCE 3

What is matter?

 Anything that has mass and occupies space.

What are three states in which matter can exist?

 Solid, liquid, and gas

How can you tell the difference between a solid, a liquid, and a gas?

 Solids have a definite shape, meaning they do not need a container to give them shape.
Solids retain their own shape. Solids also have a definite volume, meaning they take up
the same amount of space no matter where or into what container they are placed.

 Liquids do not have a definite shape. They take the shape of the container in which they
are placed. However, like solids, liquids have a definite volume. This means they take up
the same amount of space in any container in which they are placed.

 Gases, like liquids, have no definite shape but take the shape of their container. Unlike
liquids and solids, gases do not have a definite volume but spread out to fill the entire
container in which they are placed.

Measurable Properties of Matter (Day 2)

1. Mass
Mass is different from weight. What do you think is their difference?

 Mass measures the amount of matter in something. The amount of gravity does not
change the amount of mass. So, an object’s mass would not change on the Moon,
even though it would have a different weight.
 Can be calculated using a triple beam balance or a scale.
 The unit for mass ALWAYS use grams (g) or kilograms (kg).

2. Weight
You’ve probably weighed yourself at home, at the doctor’s office, or in the gym. But what does
that number mean?
 Weight - measure of the pull of gravity on an object.
 Spring scale- is an instrument used to measure weight.
 The unit for mass is expressed in Newton (N).

3. Volume

How about the volume? You’ve already know the mass and weight. What is
volume?

 Volume - the amount of space an object takes up.

 It is expressed in cubic centimeter, milliliter, or liter.

As your short activity, in your notebook, list some instruments that are used in measuring
mass, weight, and volume.

Observable Properties of Matter (Day 3)

OBSERVABLE PHYSICAL PROPERTIES- Properties in which you use your five senses
to get information about an object.

1. Color- The color of object can be seen and is a physical property of matter. Color can
help identify a substance. For example, sulfur is usually yellow in color, iodine is usually
red in color.

2. Texture – the visual and tactile quality of a surface.

3. Shape- matters come in different shapes. Matter may be circular, square, rectangular, or
triangular. Some have irregular shapes.

4. Size- Matter comes in different sizes. Matter may be small or big. It may be long or short.

II. Complete each sentence with the word solid, liquid, or gas.

A (13)____________________________ has a definite shape. It does not

take the shape of its container. It also has a definite volume because it can be
measured. A (14)____________________________ does not have a definite
shape. It takes the shape of its container. It does have a definite volume because it
can be measured. A (15)____________________________ does not have a
definite shape. It sometimes takes the shape of its container and sometimes flies
freely around you. These particles are not connected to each other and takes up
whatever space is available.
