Unit 7: Medical frontiers

Task 1: Read the following text and answer the questions below:
Dr. Robot For generations now, people have dreamed of robots taking over the world—in good ways
and bad. People have envisioned robots doing things humans don’t want to do, like cleaning their
homes and driving their cars. People have also imagined a world in which robots that humans have
invented completely take over. It’s not likely that robots will rule the world in the future, but they may
play a larger role in hospitals and doctors’ offices. There are already medical robots being used
today. Some are performing remote surgery. The doctor is not completely out of the picture, but
performs the surgery from a remote location by controlling a machine that has contact with the
patient. This allows patients to get care from expert surgeons even if they are far away from
them. Some robots, like the da Vinci surgical robot, can perform procedures like removing cancerous
cells better than traditional surgery or radiation. The da Vinci surgical robot was first designed in
1999, and today it is used for many surgeries, including head, neck, and cardiac operations. The robot
has four arms, a three-dimensional viewing system, and other operational tools that a doctor operates
from a control room separate from where the patient and robot are located. One major benefit is that
the robotic arm is much more flexible than the human hand. The da Vinci robot system has already
been used to operate on over three million people around the world, and this number will likely
increase in the future as the cost of the system decreases. However, unlike a science fiction movie, it
is doubtful that robots will ever completely replace doctors. Although some feel that entirely
automated surgeries will be possible in the future, doctors will still be needed to develop systems and
consult with patients about their treatment
