Test 2
1) (a) Express 2𝑥 2 − 𝑥 + 6 in the form 𝑝(𝑥 − 𝑞)2 + 𝑟, where p, q and r are constants to be found. Hence, state the least
value of 2𝑥 2 − 𝑥 + 6 and the value of x at which this occurs.

(c) Solve the inequality 9𝑥 2 + 2𝑥 − 1 < (𝑥 + 1)2 .
2) (a) Find the set of values of k for which the curve 𝑦 = 2𝑥 2 + 𝑘𝑥 + 2𝑘 − 6 lies above the x-axis for all values of x.
(b) Sketch the graph of 𝑦 = |(2𝑥 + 3)(2𝑥 − 7)|. Determine the number of solutions that satisfy the equation
|(2𝑥 + 3)(2𝑥 − 7)| = 2𝑥.
(c) The number of bacteria B in a culture, t days after the first observation, is given by 𝐵 = 500 + 400𝑒 0.2𝑡 .
(i) Find the initial number present.
(ii) Find the number present after 10 days.
(iii) Find the value of t when B = 10 000.
4) (a) The line 𝑦 = 𝑚𝑥 + 2 is a tangent to the curve 𝑦 = 𝑥 2 + 12𝑥 + 18. Find the possible values of m.
(b) The polynomial 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑎𝑥 3 − 15𝑥 2 + 𝑏𝑥 − 2 has a factor of 2𝑥 − 1 and a remainder of 5 when divided by 𝑥 − 1.
(i) Show that 𝑏 = 8 and find the value of a.
(ii) Using the values of a and b from part (i), express 𝑓(𝑥) in the form (2𝑥 − 1)𝑔(𝑥), where 𝑔(𝑥) is a quadratic
factor to be found.
(iii) Show that the equation 𝑓(𝑥) = 0 has only one real root.
