! Important
Before beginning this procedure, review how to load the drives based on drive type,
speed, and capacity. For more information, see the HP 3PAR StoreServ 7000 Storage
Installation Guide.

There are two types of drive enclosures that are used for expansion:
• The HP M6710 Drive Enclosure (2U24) holds up to 24, 2.5 inch SFF SAS disk drives arranged vertically in a
single row at the front of the enclosure. The back of the enclosure includes two 580W PCMs and two I/O
modules.
• The HP M6720 Drive Enclosure (4U24) holds up to 24, 3.5 LFF SAS disk drives, arranged horizontally with
four columns of six disk drives. The back of the enclosure includes two 580W PCMs and two I/O modules.

HP Restricted 71
HP 3PAR StoreServ 7000 Hardware Training Rev. 12.42

• DP2 of a 7200 is limited to 3 expansion drive enclosures

• DP1 of a 7200 is limited to 2 expansion drive enclosures
• DP2 of a 7400 is limited to 5 expansion drive enclosures
• DP1 of a 7400 is limited to 4 expansion drive enclosures
The combined total for 7200 is five expansion drive enclosures (six enclosures total, include the node
enclosure) and nine for the 7400. A system that has two 7400s will have a maximum capacity of 18 expansion
drive enclosures (20 enclosures total including the two node enclosures).

HP 3PAR StoreServ 7000 Hardware Training Rev. 12.42

You can install additional disk drives to upgrade partially populated drive
enclosures.
• When adding the first expansion drive enclosure to a system, the enclosure must be populated with the
same number of disk drives as the node enclosure
• When adding a pair of disks in a drive enclosure they must be in an identical pair and the disk drives
should be placed in the lowest available slot numbers
• The same number of disk drives should added to all of the drive enclosures of that type in the system
• The minimum upgrade to a two–node system without expansion drive enclosures is two identical disk
drives
• The minimum upgrade to a four–node system without expansion drive enclosures is four identical disk
drives

Chain for node 1 is reverse of that for node 0

Next add cage connection to chain on node 1
• Remove path from service where new cage will be added
− This will gracefully move all I/O to path on node 0
− Command used is “servicecage startfc”

• Find cable connecting SAS port on node 1 to IN port on IFC 1 of first cage in the chain and unplug it from the
IFC IN port
• Plug this cable in to the IN port of IFC 1of the new cage
− Depending on location of new cage, this cable may need to be replaced if not long enough.
• Connect new cable from OUT port on IFC 1 of new cage in chain to IN port on IFC 1 where cable was
previously disconnected
• Verify SAS connectivity on path where cable was added
• Restore service to path

Service Processor enhancements

The Service Processor (SP) includes several improvements compared to previous versions. Whereas previous SPs were
installed in two steps (base image installation and then the SP application installation), the new SP is easier to install.
Installation is completed in a single install step, for both the base image install and the SP application install.
Additional enhancements include:
• It is easier to deploy an SP, and the Virtual SP (VSP) can be deployed using VMware ESX/ESXi tools
• SP setup is easier using the SP Setup Wizard
• Storage System setup is easier using the Storage System Setup Wizard
• Upgrades are easier using the Service Processor Online Customer Care (SPOCC)
Note: The SP is only supported on 7000 Storage systems.

HP Restricted 8
HP 3PAR StoreServ 7000 Software Training Rev. 12.42

Service Processor functionality

Physical installation of the SP is performed with a single ISO file. The virtual Service Processor (VSP) is deployed from an
Open Virtualization Format (OVF) template in VMware.
The SP setup wizard is an HTML form-type application where all SP setup and configuration information is entered. This
wizard then talks to the SP and configures it.
The Storage System Setup Wizard is also an HTML form type application where all storage system setup/configuration
information is filled out. This wizard then talks to the storage system and configures the same. Upgrade uses SPOCC,
an HTML-based tool, and is intuitive to use.

HP Restricted 9
HP 3PAR StoreServ 7000 Software Training Rev. 12.42

Configuration rules
All configuration rules are enforced in the HTML forms. Any invalid entry will be caught and help will be provided for the
acceptable inputs. The SP is a service tool, so installation, upgrade, and downgrade can be performed during any
convenient time
• The storage system will not be monitored during the downtime caused to the SP.
• Any critical events from the Storage System must be monitored directly on the Storage System during the SP
downtime.

Troubleshooting the Service Processor

When you are gathering information to troubleshoot the Service Processor, the GUI gathers any files you need for
troubleshooting.
There are no commands that need to be run, because the SP in InForm OS 3.1.2 is moving away from the command line
to a GUI.
Error messages are generated by the application when the inputs to the HTML form do not match the validation rules
embedded in the application or when there are connectivity issues to the system operated upon. Examples of error
messages include:
• Invalid Service Processor ID (SPID)
• Connection to the storage system is not working
• Invalid IP address or other problems

HP Restricted 11
HP 3PAR StoreServ 7000 Software Training Rev. 12.42

Troubleshooting error messages

• Invalid SPID—Invalid SPID means that the SPID is not any one of the following:
− 7-character SP ID—The literal 'SP' string (2 characters) + 5 digits, e.g., SP09997 (Legacy SP IDs)
− 12-character SP ID—The literal 'SP' string (2 characters) + 10 alphanumeric characters containing the HP serial
number; for example, SP5463AB1253 (HP Gen 8 IDs)
− 34-character SP ID—The literal 'SP' string (2 characters) + 32 alphanumeric characters; for example,
SPT1234567890K12345678901234567890 (Virtual SP IDs)
• Connection to the storage system is not working—The connection to the storage system could fail for a variety of
reasons: networking issues, firewall blocks, or secure shell (SSH) keys issues, among others.
• Invalid IP address—Invalid IP address means that the IP address does not conform to the dotted decimal IPv4 address
format or the IP address used is from a reserved address space from IANA.

Virtual ports overview

The addition of virtual ports to 3PAR InForm OS 3.1.2 allows 3PAR host-facing ports to mimic the WWN or port of a
partner node in the event that the partner node goes down or the link is down.
• On Fibre Channel ports, the system uses N_Port ID Virtualization (NPIV).
• On iSCSI ports, the system uses IP failover.
In SAN connect configurations, port switchover keeps host paths online, so that online software upgrades can proceed
without the risk inherent in any dependency on multipath software.

HP Restricted 100
HP 3PAR StoreServ 7000 Software Training Rev. 12.42

Nondisruptive upgrade
Mission-critical Tier1 environments require consistent high availability. When online software upgrades depend on
multipath software, there is a possibility that the failover and failback will cause a service disruption. If multipath
software were to fail during an online software upgrade, a business could suffer an application outage with no host
paths available. NPIV allows for online software upgrades without the depending on multipathing.

HP Restricted 101
HP 3PAR StoreServ 7000 Software Training Rev. 12.42

Business benefits of port virtualization

The host path remains online throughout the online software upgrade process with no multipath disruption.
• The storage controller reboot is transparent to host paths.
− Error recovery does not extend into host-based path management.
• There is no dependency on the host multipath software. The array informs the switch that both ports are available.
− Host multipath software does not take a path offline, because the SAN relays that all paths are available.

HP Restricted 102
HP 3PAR StoreServ 7000 Software Training Rev. 12.42

Virtual ports concepts and terminology

The HP 3PAR port numbering scheme is:
Node:Slot:Port (N:S:P)
Each host-facing port has a Native identity and a Guest identity. The Guest identity is associated with a pre-designated
backup port on another 3PAR node.
Each host-facing port has only one backup port on a different node in the storage .
A 3PAR port can serve as the primary port for a given host ports and backup port for host ports connected to its partner
port.

HP Restricted 103
HP 3PAR StoreServ 7000 Software Training Rev. 12.42

How do Virtual Ports work?

If the primary port’s node goes down, the backup port on the partner node assumes it’s responsibility:
• The port logs into the fabric with the identity of the backup port, in addition to it’s primary port.
• The Fabric to 3PAR changes the path from the primary port to the backup port.
• Effect is visible at the Fibre Channel layer, not the SCSI layer.

Online software upgrade flow (1 of 3)

Pre-check tool validates that virtual ports cabling is valid
− Ensures same host WWNs appear on the pre-designated primary/backup port pair
− Ensure primary and backup ports connected to same fabric
− Online software upgrade does not proceed if invalid cabling is detected
Host-facing ports on node 0 are switched over nondisruptively to their predesignated backup ports on node 1
− Ports switchover
Node 0 is shutdown, upgraded, and restarted
− Starts up with new InForm OS version

HP Restricted 105
HP 3PAR StoreServ 7000 Software Training Rev. 12.42

Online software upgrade flow (2 of 3)

• Host-facing ports on node 0 are re-activated
− Ports switchover
• Online upgrade process pauses
− Applicable only if a wait time was specified
• Host-facing ports on node 1 are failed over nondisruptively to their pre-designated backup ports on node 0
− Port failover occurs similarly as described in step 2
• Node 1 is shut down, upgraded, and restarted
− Starts up with new InForm OS version

HP Restricted 106
HP 3PAR StoreServ 7000 Software Training Rev. 12.42

Online software upgrade flow with Virtual Ports (3 of 3)

Host-facing ports on node 1 are re-activated
− Ports switchover
Same process continues until every node in the system has been upgraded
Online software upgrade completes

Virtual port usage

Virtual ports are administered with the following CLI commands:
• controlport
• showport
• showportdev
• statport/histport
• showvlun / statvlun
• showiscsisession / statiscsisession
controlport
The controlport command controls failover and failback. It is most useful for performing a manual failover and failback
to verify that the SAN supports failover.
• controlport failover N:S:P
• controlport failback N:S:P

showport
showport provides a ‘Partner’ and ‘FailoverState’ column to indicate the partner/failover port for the current port and
the current failover state.
The assignment of partner port is hardcoded.
The following output describes the results of the showport command:
root@snodec69d:S170# showport 0:0:1 0:0:2 0:4:1 0:4:2 1:0:1 1:0:2 1:4:1 1:4:2

showport
‘FailoverState’ can be:
• none—Failover not in operation
• failover_pending—Failover to partner request has been issued but not yet completed (transient state)
• failed_over—This port is failed over to its partner
• failback_pending—Failback request has been issued but not yet completed (transient state)
• active—The partner port is failed over to this port
• active_down—The partner port failed over to this port, but this port is down. For example, the cable missing.
• active_failed—The partner port failed over to this port, but the action failed. For example, the Fibre Channel switch did
not have NPIV enabled.

showportdev
The showportdev command shows the devices that are seen by a given physical port. Where a physical port is hosting
multiple WWNs, the ‘vp_WWN’ indicates which virtual port WWN the given device is associated with, such as in normal
mode, where there is only the single native WWN hosted by the physical port.

Configuration rules
Failover partnership rule
This is a hard coded rule: N:S:P partners with N^1:S:P
Example
• 0:1:1 partners 1:1:1 means that:
− 0:1:1 provides failover for 1:1:1
− 1:1:1 provides failover for 0:1:1
• 2:1:1 partners 3:1:1 means that:
− 2:1:1 provides failover for 3:1:1
− 3:1:1 provides failover for 2:1:1
Fabric configuration rules
Fibre Channel Fabric must have NPIV enabled.

HP Restricted 118

Port configuration rules

When you configure ports, remember that host and guest ports must be same HBA type.
• Fibre Channel ports—Must be in target mode, with ‘point to point’ connection type
− Fibre Channel fabric must have NPIV enabled
• iSCSI ports—Configure IP address, disable DHCP
Additional considerations:
• Performance benefits—There are no performance benefits to port virtualization.
• Compatibility—Port virtualization works on any 3PAR InForm OS 3.1.2 capable storage array.

If NPIV on the switch disabled, using controlport illustrates the states ‘failover_pending’ and ‘active_failed’.
After NPIV is enabled, the state changes to ‘active’. A subsequent cable pull would cause the state to change again to

Information to gather for path level problems

If a problem occurs during failover, path level problems can be seen in the host system log or multi-pathing software.
Information from the storage system should be collected for analysis by engineering. In the first instance, collect
information from:
• sysmgr log: /var/log/tpd/sysmgr
• eventlog (using showeventlog)
• output of showport, showvlun –lvw, gethost
For further analysis, generate an InSplore.

Transparent failover with 3PAR and VMware Metrocluster

In transparent failover configurations, each host is connected to each array on both sites with redundant fabric. Each
volume is exported in read-write mode, with the same WWN from both arrays on both sites. Volume paths for a given
volume are only active on the array where the primary copy of the volume resides. Other volume paths are marked
“passive”. Synchronous copy of the volume is kept on the partner array or site.

HP Restricted 131
HP 3PAR StoreServ 7000 Software Training Rev. 12.42

Peer Persistence
Peer persistence is a new feature that has been added to Remote Copy in InForm OS 3.1.2. It allows synchronous Remote
Copy volumes to be created on primary and secondary arrays using the same WWN addresses, and exported to the
same host set from both arrays. Host I/O access is managed using synchronous Remote Copy to allow volume access
to be migrated between primary and secondary arrays without disrupting I/O from the host set.
This migration is managed with the setrcopygroup switchover <group> command.
Business benefits
The Peer Persistence feature allows versatile deployment of storage services within data centers.

HP Restricted 132
HP 3PAR StoreServ 7000 Software Training Rev. 12.42

Asymmetrical logical unit access

Access to these volumes is controlled using different target port groups as defined in SPC-4.
Asymmetrical Logical Unit Access (ALUA) is used to define different target port groups for both primary and secondary
array allowing the primary target port group to be configured as Active and the secondary target port group
configured as Standby.
Active target port groups supports SCSI read/write access. The Standby target port groups do not support SCSI
read/write access.

HP Restricted 133
HP 3PAR StoreServ 7000 Software Training Rev. 12.42

Transparent failover
When the setrcopygroup switchover <group> command is issued, host access to the primary volumes is blocked, and any
in-flight I/O is allowed to drain. The group is then stopped and failed over to the secondary volume. Target port groups
on the primary volume are changed to Standby and secondary target port groups will become Active.
Any I/O which was blocked on the primary volumes will now be unblocked and returned to the issuing host with a sense
error indicating the change of target port group. The host will perform fresh inquiries on all target ports and reissue
the I/O to the secondary volumes.
The Remote Copy group is reversed to reflect the updated roles for both arrays, and the group restarted so that a
disaster recovery solution remains available.

Remote Copy—Issues and risks (1 of 2)

The performance goals of Peer Persistence are to ensure that the attached host set does not timeout during the
switchover operation.
For small groups with few volumes this is normally not an issue, however with a large number of volumes spread over a
number of groups the switchover operation can take a longer period of time than our goal of 30 seconds maximum.
The reason for this is that the switchover operation requires snapshots to be taken on both primary and secondary so
that recovery points are in place should the operation fail. As a result of these snapshots the system TOC is updated
which results in non-optimal switchover times.
The switchover operation is a superset of the existing Remote Copy disaster recovery commands including stoprcopy,
failover, recover and reverse operations.
The recover sub-operation requires that the volumes are promoted back to a known state.

HP Restricted 135
HP 3PAR StoreServ 7000 Software Training Rev. 12.42

Remote Copy—Issues and risks (2 of 2)

This should be a purely academic operation as the volumes should be consistent during the switchover so there should
be no data to promote, however in the event that the switchover has failed OR the user has been using different
combinations of Remote Copy commands then the recover sub-operation does require the promote to prevent
miscompares between primary and secondary volumes.
As a result of these promotes the final reverse operation which tidies up the state of the remote copy group is an
asynchronous task which might timeout if the volume promotes take longer than we expect, or if communications
between the arrays is lost during this time.
In this instance the primary and secondary groups will be marked as pri-rev and sec-rev and subsequent switchover
commands will fail until the reverse operation is completed.
To manually complete this operation the user should use the setrcopygroup reverse –natural <groupname> command
which will complete the tidyup of these groups.
Installation, upgrade, and downgrade
Use the normal procedure for installation, upgrade and downgrade of this software.

Valid configurations for Adaptive Optimization include:
• Two tiers with SAS 10K/15K and nearline
• Two tiers with SSD and SAS 10K/15K
• Three tiers with SSD, SAS 10K/15K, and nearline
Note: Configurations with SSDs and nearline storage only are not recommended

Average application I/O locality

Most applications have a locality profile that can be served for 50% of the IOPS with less than 3% of SSD capacity. The
SAS 10/15K tier should be sized for the remaining 50% of the performance requirement.

HP Restricted 149
HP 3PAR StoreServ 7000 Software Training Rev. 12.42

Adaptive Optimization sizing best practices

Always include SAS 10/15K disks in Adaptive Optimization configurations
With a 7400-4 nodes, make sure all tiers are available on each node pair. Do not add SSDs or nearline disks to only one
node pair or Adaptive Optimization will not work optimally
Ensure that at least 1/3 of the capacity and 50% of the performance can be delivered by SAS disks
Use the following rule of thumb for sizing capacity of each tier
• SSD—2-3% of the capacity and 50% of the performance requirement
• SAS—35-40% of the capacity and 50% of the performance requirement
• Nearline—Rest of the capacity
Upgrade and downgrade considerations
• Upgrade:
− Customers using the existing Adaptive Optimization implementation will need to manually port their configurations
from the external System Reporter/Adaptive Optimization system to the new version.
• Downgrade
− If a customer with an on-array Adaptive Optimization configuration downgrades to an earlier version of the 3PAR OS
(InForm OS), the Adaptive Optimization configurations will be lost and will need to be recreated manually if they
upgrade to 3.1.2 again.

On-node System Reporter overview

System Reporter (version 3.2) includes historical data sampling and Adaptive Optimization within HP 3PAR InForm OS
3.1.2, without any dependency on an external controller or master node. System Reporter now runs on one of the
controller nodes, where it provides historical performance and space data, which are collected and stored in internal
SQLite databases. This data can be organized in reports for viewing this data in various useful ways.
System Reporter supports a full external version of System Reporter (3.1) running on an external server with an external
database. However, the external version does not support AO for 3.1.2 systems but will continue to work for 2.3.1 and
3.1.1 systems.
Adaptive Optimization can be implemented on the controller node to use historical performance data to perform sub-
LUN tiering.

On-node System Reporter—Overview

For InForm OS 3.1.2, System Reporter (version 3.2) includes historical data sampling and Adaptive Optimization within
InForm OS, without any dependency on an external controller or master node. System Reporter now runs on one of the
controller nodes, where it provides historical performance and space data, which are collected and stored in internal
SQLite databases. This data can be organized in reports for viewing this data in various useful ways.
Adaptive Optimization can be implemented on the controller node, to use historical performance data to perform sub-
LUN tiering.
System Reporter is divided into the following functions:
• Debugging—Tracking down issues, drilling down
• Trending—Identifying upgrade needs
• Data sampling—Collect and store performance and space data
• Reporting—Provide reports derived by querying the data
On-node System Reporter provides the following functions:
• Configuration of Adaptive Optimization
• Scheduling Adaptive Optimization
• Adaptive Optimization algorithm
• SQLite database
Chargeback function
System Reporter 3.1 also offers a chargeback function, which provides data for customized chargeback.
Note: System Reporter does not provide actual chargebacks.

HP Restricted 155
HP 3PAR StoreServ 7000 Software Training Rev. 12.42

System Reporter 3.2

System Reporter 3.2 for InForm OS 3.1.2 runs on the non-master nodes, and stores performance and space data in
SQLite data files. If the node it is running on fails, it simply moves to another node and continues to run.
Note: The system must therefore have more than two nodes.
System Reporter can perform Adaptive Optimization on the controller node.
Configuration and setup
System Reporter is part of InForm OS 3.1.2, and does not need to be installed or configured. The only setup is to create
the .srdata volume, which happens automatically with oodb or adminthw commands. There is no configuration
required to set up sampling. You can stop and start System Reporter, but there is no way to change the sampling or
intervals.
To upgrade from 3.1.1 or earlier, customers only need to create the .srdata VV, which is created by running ootb or
admithw.
Considerations
If the system is very busy, or if the disks that the .srdata VV uses are very busy, sampling might be slower than expected.
Note: For example, high-resolution samples could take longer than five minutes.
Important! If there is only one node online, it will be the master node and will not mount the .srdata VV. This is deliberate
so that the master node does not get overloaded.

HP Restricted 156
HP 3PAR StoreServ 7000 Software Training Rev. 12.42

System Reporter—Compatibility
The external System Reporter in the previous version (3.1) will still work with System Reporter for InForm OS 3.1.2—it
runs on an external server with an external database. Adaptive Optimization will not work for InForm OS 3.1.2 systems
running System Reporter 3.1, but it will continue to work for 2.3.1 and 3.1.1 systems. Off-node Adaptive Optimization
is not supported in 3.1.2, regardless of the platform. It is only available for 3.1.1 and earlier.
System Reporter can be administered through the command line interface (CLI) and also through the Management
Console.
Note: The older, external version of System Reporter will not support Adaptive Optimization for InForm OS 3.1.2
systems.
Running System Reporter from the nodes avoids a performance problem to earlier versions of System Reporter, because
the program is not affected if the master node is very busy.
Note: Performance might vary depending on CPU/memory/disk resources.
