Grammar: Past Simple vs.

Past Continuous
A) PAST SIMPLE
Use: -To talk about actions that started and finished in a specific point in time.
-The actions happened just once.
-These actions are often referred as “the main event”
Verbs: -Regular: -ED
WORK – WORKED /t/
STAY – STAYED /d/
WANT – WANTED /id/
-Irregular: NO rules.
EAT – ATE
SING – SANG
READ – READ /red/
PUT – PUT
Auxiliaries:-Other verbs: Did/Didn't
-Verb To Be: Was/Wasn't – Were/Weren't

B) PAST CONTINUOUS:
Form: Verb To Be (was / were) + V-ING
Use: -To describe an action in progress in the past and was interrupted.
I was doing my homework when you called.
-While/When are often use to connect sequence of events.
While he was playing video games, she cooked dinner.
When they arrived, we were singing karaoke.
SPELLING RULES
-Have – having
-Swim – swimming

Grammar explanation
Stative verbs describe a state rather than an action. They aren't usually used in the present continuous form.
I don't know the answer. I'm not knowing the answer.
She really likes you. She's really liking you.
He seems happy at the moment. He's seeming happy at the moment.

Stative verbs often relate to:


•thoughts and opinions: agree, believe, doubt, guess, imagine, know, mean, recognise, remember, suspect, think,
understand
I'm agree with you / I agree with you / I don't agree with you.
•I think today is a beautiful day (opinion)
•I'm thinking about making pastas for lunch (action)
•feelings and emotions: dislike, hate, like, love, prefer, want, wish
•senses and perceptions: appear, be, feel, hear, look, see, seem, smell, taste
•The boy smells of fish (sense)
•The boy is smelling the fish (action)
•possession and measurement: belong, have, measure, own, possess, weigh.
•I have a car
•I'm having a car

Verbs that are sometimes stative


A number of verbs can refer to states or actions, depending on the context.
