PAST PERFECT
Form: HAD + VERB IN PAST PARTICIPLE
Use:
-To talk about something that happened BEFORE an action
in the past.
-Mostly used in narratives (sequence of events)

Examples:
My mom had made breakfast when I woke up.
I couldn't make a sandwich because I hadn't bought bread.
By the time her father arrived, she had finished the
homework.
Before we got fired, we had worked there for a year.
PAST PERFECT CONTINUOUS
Form: HAD + BEEN + VERB -ING
Use:
-To talk about something that was happening DURING an
action in the past.
-Mostly used in narratives (to provide details)
-The emphasis is on the DURATION

Examples:
My mom had been working in the company for 2 years
when she finally got the promotion.
I hadn't been waiting at the station for long when the bus
arrived.
They had been living together before they decided to get
married.
