A High-Tec Story telling… generic overview of content capture types

Each day of the expedition the team accumulates and captures a variety of dynamic multimedia content: high-definition video and stills, 360 panoramas, ‘Geo-
Immersive’ Video; sound samples, GPS tracking/route information, multi camera video streams, sat mapping etc. By utilising a selection of hi-tech tools – night
vision, thermal, digital hi-speed, underwater, PVR CAM (multiple body worn web-cams) and HOVERCAM (a remote controlled helicopter for aerials) – we can
deliver ‘special feature’ content when applicable. By applying cutting-edge communications equipment at a grass roots level, we explore the human landscape,
dig into issues, meet with fascinating characters, face challenges and overcome obstacles to get the inside story, while we receive advice and guidance from
the viewers and people on-line as the journey unfolds.

EXAMPLE OF FEED UTILISATION:

VIDEO: This content type breaks down into: standard store & forward, non-linear immersive narrative, 360 geo immersive, selectable perspective & body
worn lipstick cameras, night vision, thermal, underwater and RC heli-cam aerial. For the purpose of this document we have focused on one type ‘Non Linear
immersive Narrative’ illustrating how it can be used in the context of our journeys, with specific relevance to Google’s many applications:

Video Feed:
A Video report from the field is sent via satellite to our web team and servers: This video has Meta tag data embedded within its time line. These are simple key
words that call for associated data as the video plays out.

Example: While travelling through the region the team meets a tribe to explore issues related to land rights and deforestation.
The narrative of the piece to camera reveals a number of key points that can be supported by aggregated content: As the video plays within its screen, meta-
data embedded into the time code, calls up deeper ‘drill down’ information in many forms. Ideally this additional information is seamlessly presented in
surrounding web space, alternatively it could be drawn into windows and frames of specific types (see below). The idea being that these, additional content
sources: enforce, inform and support the core narrative supplying the user with contextual information of many types. A simple mouse click pauses the video
and links to content type.

This content falls into 6 main categories. Each embedded meta tag will action a search on each category as the video plays; momentarily presenting that
information to the user as a ‘drill down’ option.

BROAD JUSTIFICATION & AUDIENCE HOOK: 2009 will see the 200 th Anniversary of the publication of Darwin’s ‘Origin of the species’.
As others focus on Darwin, our high tech collaborative journey takes a different path! Little known but widely held, Darwin was
accused of plagiarising the work of others, most notably the intrepid explorer and naturalists … … Sir Alfred Wallace.

The Wallace journey (as below) and its timely association with Darwin session (major BBC series etc) represents a tangible but broad
narrative line (audience ‘HOOK’) that allows us to explorer (in unprecedented ways) what has happened to the region in the 200
years since it was first ‘discovered’ by the great explorer. The historical context of the region is immense. The search for the Spice
Islands and later the North Western passage represents a tipping point in history and the birth of so call modern exploration.
Spice was not the only commodity that returned on the ships, knowledge of the wider world also flowed into the commercial hubs
the western world…. Expanding the horizons of modern man and revealing the rich cultural, as well as commercial diversity of
distant shores…

Much has changed… as our journey will reveal.

LOCATION: South Pacific, Indonesian Island Group: Maluku, Halmahera, Kai and Banda (former Dutch Spice Islands), within the
Banda and Arafura Seas, touching on West Papua and Northern Sulawesi. This portion of the South East Asian expedition (lead by
