Granny Heart Square

Requirements:
4mm crochet hook
30g Double Knit cotton yarn
darning needle

Abbreviations (US Terminology):

4 ch, join with a slip stitch in first ch to form circle (or complete using
the Magic Circle).

Round 1: 3 ch (counts as first dc),


2 dc in circle,
*2 ch,
3 dc in circle,
rep from * twice more,
1 dc in top of beg 3-ch to join.

Round 2: 3 ch (counts as first dc),


2 dc in same sp,
2 ch,
3 dc in same sp,
*1 ch,
3 dc, 2 ch, 3 dc in next sp,
rep from * twice more,
1 ch,
1 sc in top of beg 3-ch to join.

Round 3: 1 sc in next 2 sts,


1 sc, 2-ch picot, 1 sc in next 2-ch sp,

This completes the heart. The following rounds square up the heart motif to
make a square.

Round 4: join new colour into 2-ch picot at bottom of heart,


[1 sc, 2 ch, 1 sc] in this same 2-ch picot sp,

sk next 2 sts,
1 sc in next st,
rep from * all the way around to the last st before the dip in the
top,
2 ch,
1 sc in next st (across the dip),
rep from * all the way to the point at the bottom, ending with a
sl st into the first sc st to join (there should be 7 ch sps on
each side of the heart with a smaller ch-sp at the top and another
smaller ch-sp at the bottom).

Round 5: sl st into next 2-ch sp (bottom of heart),

1 dc, 1 tr, 1 dtr, 2 ch into the next ch-sp(corner made),

2 hdc, 1 dc, 1 ch into the next ch-sp,
2 dc, 1 tr, 2 ch, 1 tr, 2 dc, 1 ch into the next ch-sp (corner
made),
1 dc, 2 hdc into next ch-sp,
1 hdc into 2-ch sp at top of heart,

Round 7: 1 sc in first st and every st and ch-sp all the way around, with 3
sc sts in each corner,
sl st in first sc to join.

Add more rounds of hdc and/or sc in each st, with 3 sts in the corners to
increase the size of the square.
In the square pictured the following rounds were added to give a measurement
of just over 6 inches:
1 round of hdc,
1 round sc,
1 round hdc,
1 round sc

Finish: Fasten off and weave in ends of yarn. Block work.
