EVIDENCE: CULTURAL LITERACY AROUND THE WORLD

When I was 25 I had the opportunity to travel and live in Israel.

The Israeli culture is varied, full of life and difficult to describe. A significant part of the origin of
the secular culture is located in the area of Tel Aviv, even though many of the official institutions
of culture are located in Jerusalem. The Israeli culture is rich and widely varied.

Most of the crafts in Israel symbolize ethnic themes and ideas that come from folktales. Ceramic
art is commonly used and is combined with fashion crafts in the country. Jewish ceramics are
elaborated artistically and religiously by applying color to porcelain to represent visual, cultural
and picturesque motifs. Nettle Point is the new art in the country and connects Israel's modern
society with the traditions of its ancestors. The country has more than 200 museums. Therefore,
Israel has the largest number of museums in the world in terms of per capita. Some of them are:
the Museum of the Biblical Lands, Ein Harod Museum, Haifa Museum, the Haifa Railway Museum,
Israel Museum, Nahum Gutman Museum, Petah Tikya Art Museum and the Tel Aviv Museum of
Art.

Israeli music is very flexible and combines the essence of Eastern and Western music. It is very
diverse and has a great variety of influences from the Diaspora (Jewish exile). Asian and Arab pop,
Hasidic songs and Israeli hip hop are modern artistic imports in the country. The traditional
folkloric dance of the country is Hora, previously a dance of rounds of Eastern Europe. The dabke
is the traditional dance of Palestinian residents and is usually performed at weddings and other
festive events. There has been a remarkable development in Israel in the last two decades that has
allowed to merge international gastronomy and traditional cooking techniques. Some of the most
famous restaurants in Israel are Mia Hunting in Tel Aviv, Janina in Nazareth and Habira in
Jerusalem.
