Lesson: Comparing Decimals

Grade: 4th

Event of Instruction Description

1. Gaining Attention I will begin the lesson by showing a short video on the topic
that we are about to learn. (My students LOVE videos/
audio/ pictures and it is a way I usually gain their attention)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RHUl4kZDD6c&t=104s

2. Objective Students will echo me as we review the objective for the

day. “We will be able to compare decimals to hundredths
by reasonings about their size.” (4.NF.C.7)

3. Recall of Prior Learning Before moving onto the new lesson, students will be
presented with their POD (problem of the day). The POD
will reflect the previous day of learning. Students may
complete the problem in their head or use their
whiteboard to solve it.
4. Presenting Content Students will begin TAP (try alone and persevere) time,
working on the unlock the problem (guided problem).

We will review the problem as needed after TAP time.

(Sometimes more review is needed than others)

Students will be given a few more examples to complete

with their group partners. Students will complete together
in a break out room and come back together and share
once time is done.

Students will be asked to show their answer in two

different ways: number line and tenth/hundredths grid

I will use the popsicle stick app and call on random

students/groups to give me their answer.

5. Providing Learning Teaching students multiple strategies to solve (hundredths

Guidance grid, number line, fractions, etc.)
Students will take notes as needed in their notebook
throughout the guided practice.
6. Eliciting Performance Before moving onto their independent work, they will
complete the 2-question CFU. This will allow me to see who
met the objective and who still needs support during 1-1
time.
7. Providing Feedback Students will be given corrective feedback after they
complete their CFU quiz. (check for understanding).
8. Assessing Performance Students will then logon to GoMath and complete their
independent work for the day. Students can join my office
hours if needed for extra support while completing.
9. Enhancing Retention After independent work, depending on their
and Transfer understanding, students will either receive enrichment or
reteach on the topic.
