Aims Required materials

The student can (in a team): -

under supervision execute and describe a predefined design process Recommended materials
formulate a design question based on a given design goal in a given context Manual and material
can, from his own specific expertise, contribute in a multidisciplinary team
deliver a set of requirements, preferences and constraints that respects the given design question
define functions that have to be realized in the design to meet the given list of requirements, preferences Instructional modes
and constraints College / course
from a creative process, generate an elaborate list of realization possibilities of the different functions in the
design that have to be realized
can distil a number of design concepts from an extensive list of realization possibilities General
make a concrete design choice based on the elaboration of a number of (typically three) concepts -
elaborate a chosen design in light of requirements, preferences and constraints
transform a design into a prototype, while finding an optimum between budget, choice of components and Remark
production methods -
develop and execute a test plan for the prototype
evaluate a prototype based on test results and give an advise for redesign
reflect on the realized design in light of the given context Tests
write a design report describing the design process, the foundation of the choices made and the evaluation Final report
of the delivered design Test weight 50
Minimum grade 6
Test type Final report

before. In this course you will learn to formulate design goals, handle external and internal constraints and
Test duration in minutes -
manage time. You will experience the difficulties in prototype realization and the stress while demonstrating your
design in a demanding test environment.
Assessment
-
Every student will be a member of a small design team with every participant coming from a different major. Since
the course runs in the second year of the Bachelor, every student can add knowledge from his own field to the

assessment and an individual assessm
The course ends with a contest where design groups compete in order to determine the best design. This is not

just a game, but also a model of how your design solutions can and will survive in the real world. The products are
tested for efficiency in a contest and judged by a jury on quality and elegance of design.

The followed design process consists of seven consecutive steps and lead to a tested and evaluated design Individual assessment

1 Formulation of the design question Opportunities Block 1
Test duration in minutes -
specification of design goal: requirements, wishes and constraints
description of functions which need to be part of the design Assessment

Short promotional description of the course

The search for casualties of a disaster such as an earthquake or a fire is often at great risk. Working in a damaged
building with risk of collapse, the presence of toxic gases and radiation is a dangerous task. A new and more secure
means to rescue casualties through the use of robots. The mission of this course is to design an original remote-
controlled "search-and-rescue" vehicle, capable of safely retrieving casualties from a disaster area.
