1) Derive condition for following geometries channel sections to be most efficient.

(Page 146)

2) Prove that a trapezoidal section will be efficient when side slope, Z = 1 (Page 150)

3) Open channel is to be constructed of trapezoidal section and with side slope 1:1.5. Find the
best dimension for minimum excavation. If the flow is to be 2.7 cumec, calculate the bottom
width and the depth of the flow assuming Chezys coefficient to be 44.5 and bed slope is 1 in
4000.(Page 151)
4) The asphalt-lined trapezoidal channel shown in figure below carries 9 m3/s of water under
uniform flow condition when S = 0.0015. what is the normal depth? Also develop a
computer program (Using Python or Julia or any other programming language) to solve for
depth. [Hint: refer standard tables to choose appropriate roughness coefficient] [Page 148]

5) Theoretically it was proven that for a rectangular channel to be efficient the aspect ratio
(y/B) has to be equal to 0.5. Verify this for a concrete rectangular channel of cross-sectional
area of1 m2 and bed slope of 1o. (Assume n = 0.012) [Page 152]
[Hint: Calculate the corresponding values for different Aspect Ratio value and plot a
graph between Aspect Ratio Vs Flow Rate. Students are advised to cross-check the
calculations using Spread sheet program]
