Embodiments of a method implemented in at least one fat tree network node for improved load distribution wherein the node is one of a plurality of fat tree network nodes
fat tree network each of which implement a tie breaking process to produce minimum cost trees is described. In some embodiments a spanning tree computation for each

61/373,928, filed August 16, 2010, entitled, "Algorithms and Automated Traffic
Engineering To Apply 802. laq to Fat Tree Networks."
FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The embodiments of the invention relate to a method and apparatus for
improving load distribution in a network. Specifically, the embodiments of the
invention relate to a method for load spreading in fat tree networks or other highly
regular switching hierarchies that have multiple equal cost paths between nodes in the
network.
BACKGROUND
Load distribution or load spreading is a method by which bandwidth is more
effectively utilized and overall performance is improved in a network. Most
automated load distribution and load spreading techniques deployed today operate
