What’s In

During your past lesson, you learned about lines, colors, space, and harmony
through painting and was able explain and illustrate landscapes of important
historical places in the community (natural or man–made) using one – point
perspective in landscape drawing, complementary colors, and the right proportions
of parts. This module will focus on understanding of the use of lines, shapes, colors,
texture, and the principles of emphasis and contrast in designing a logo using new
technologies.

Logos are the most common symbols we see around us. We see them
almost everywhere and many logos have become famous and a delight to see.

Logos are among the most common symbols in our visual environment. We
see them on television, on the Web, on billboards, in newspapers, in magazines, etc.
They are printed on clothes, buses, notebooks, and so on. Many of these logos have
become famous and easily recognized.

Logos as symbols convey a message, an idea, or information about that

which they represent.

4
In designing a logo, the artist needs commitment, perseverance, creativity and
technical know-how to create a standout material that truly represents the company,
organization, or brand it represents. Logos come in two different types. The first one
is Personal logos and the Business and Product logos. It also use different Art
elements in making them such as symbols, colors, words and texts, shapes,
symmetry and balance and uniqueness and individuality among others.

A successful logo is usually simple and direct in design, it should be easy to

read or understand, even at a distance and is normally limited to one to three colors.

Logos come in different types. The following are the two types of logos:

1. Personal logos – Logos used as personal images represent brand

possessions, achievements, or even persona l identity.

2. Business and Product logos – Among the popular symbols are trademarks,
which are symbols of a business or product. Because the business environment
became so competitive the companies had to create a trademark image for them
to survive and aimed to have a company logo that was a visible symbol of a
standout product.

Logo design is an important field of graphic arts. Like all graphic arts, logo
design is about communicating a specific message to the intended target audience.
Many logo designs are about selling different product and services made by different
logo designers.

Logo designers are the artists who attend to the visual presentation of a
logo. These visual artists take charge of how to effectively convey the message of
the logo that represents the company or brand.

Art Elements Used in Logo Design

Designing a logo takes technical know-how, as well as good sense of design

and art. That being so, it is not just something a logo designer introduces to the
world. Effective logo design should consider the following attributes:

1. Symbols – Symbols instantly make people associate

traits or messages with a company, group, product, or
service. Through symbols, people find it easier to
recognize, identify, or recall images than texts.

5
2. Colors – Color is a very powerful. Every color can
create varied emotions within customers. Red is warm.
It conveys strength, passion, and excitement. Blue is
cool. Rainbow color logos carry meanings that are
friendly, fun and youthful. Keep the number of your
colors few - one to four colors – and simple.

3. Words, Texts – Many of the most popular and

Successful companies prefer logos with simple and
easy-to-grasp text. In this way, the logo is easier to
see and remember.

4. Shapes, Symmetry, Balance – The use of simple

Geometric shapes like the triangle, square, and circle
are quite popular in logo design. Like simple texts,
using simple, neat, and easy-to-recognize geometric
shapes can convey unique identity in the eyes of
the viewers.

5. Free-form – Logos that are free-form should not

appear like they are about to fall, loose, or look
unstable even if they do not have even or straight
lines or predictable shapes.

6. Fonts, Typeface – The style of the lettering or typeface

speaks a lot about the visual story of a logo. It can, for
example, send the right or wrong message. The STOP
logo on this page uses a form that sends a serious
and well-meaning message.

7. Proportions, Size – Logos should be versatile and flexible for their many uses.
Well-designed logos should look just as great on billboards, streamers, posters,
clothes, stationeries, bags, and others.

6
8. Uniqueness and Individuality – It is the wish of logo
designers to create logos that are elegant, meaningful,
and timeless. The Mickey Mouse logo, for example, is
undeniably one of the most popular, effective, and
timeless logos in the world.

Identify the following logo.

1. 5.

2. 6.

3. 7.

4. 8.
