CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS SETTING

INTRODUCTION

Today, speaking in English language is a very serious topic especially for


students’ who are not aware about English Proficiency. English Proficiency is a
students’ ability to use English to make and communicate meaning verbally and
in writing during their program of study. The basic goal of high school English is
to enhance the student knowledge and skills so that they can function effectively
in English particularly in classroom setting. It was stated in the Philippine
education system that high school students with ages ranging from 12 to 17 are
expected to have basic knowledge about English and the four communication
skill which will enable them to function satisfactorily in certain English
communication situation.

English Proficiency is important in the global market place therefore cannot


be understated, learning English really important in our life. It is associated with
different factors and it is indeed important for teachers to know of these factors in
order to have the learners appreciate the importance of English in the mastery
and for them to become a competitive student. Learning English gives us
competitive advantage in the real world. Variety of employment opportunities
have evolved where mastery of English is compulsorily needed. English is the
dominant business language and it has become almost a necessity for people to
speak English if they are to enter a global work force.

English is the universal language. Learn and use it in particular purposes is


our obligation to understand the correct usage of grammars and speaking skills
to express ourselves in English fluently. The more the students’ are proficient
with the English language the more they are likely to perform well in their
academic subjects. The students’ difficulty in English included difficulties in
making inferences and interpretation of information and summarizing ideas as
well as their written works.

The main goal of this study is to determine the factors affecting the
English Proficiency of the Grade 10 Saint Joachim students of Mount Carmel
College of Casiguran. These also aims to suggest applicable ways to further
improve the English Proficiency of the students.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This study is conducted to determine the factors affecting the English


Proficiency of the Grade 10 Saint Joachim students of Mount Carmel College of
Casiguran.

Specifically, it will be conducted to answer the following questions:

1.How the profile of the respondents be described in terms of the following:

1.1 Age

1.2 Gender

1.3 Educational attainment of parent

1.3.1 Mother

1.3.2 Father

1.4 Language spoken at home

2. What are the factors affecting the English Proficiency of the Grade 10 Saint
Joachim students of the Mount Carmel College of Casiguran?

ASSUMPTIONS

In conducting this study, the researchers assume that:

1.The perceptions of the respondents differ because of their demographic


characteristics.

2.That there are factors affecting the English Proficiency of Grade 10 Saint
Joachim of Mount Carmel College of Casiguran.

SCOPE AND LIMITATION

The study focuses on the factors that affect English Proficiency of the
Grade 10 Saint Joachim students of Mount Carmel College of Casiguran, School
Year 2018 to 2019. The researchers will be adopted the qualitative research
design using questionnaire as the main data gathering instrument. The variables
of the study are the demographic profile of the respondents and the factors
affecting the English Proficiency. Primary data will be gathered websites in the
internet and assessed information from giving questionnaires of the respondents.
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The results of the study will be expected to offer value of the following:

For the students

This study will inform students about the importance of learning English.
This will provide information to make them be aware of the correct usage of
grammar. This will not only motivate them to perform better but will also suggest
tips to improve their proficiency in English.

For teachers

The findings of the study will provide the teachers sufficient information
for them to assess their students in learning English. This will be an opener to
use teaching strategies that will effectively enhance the English Proficiency
among students.

For the parents

This study will enable parents to motivate their children concerning on the
English Proficiency.

For the future researchers

The outcome of this study will serve as reference material for the future
studies of the future researchers.

DEFINITION OF TERMS

Demographic profile- It provides data regarding research participants and is


necessary for the determination of whether the individuals in a particular study
are a representative sample of the target for generalization purposes.

Factors- It is something that helps produce or influence a result.

English Proficiency- Is a students’ ability to use English to make and


communicate meaning verbally and in writing during their program of study.

Junior high school students- Refers to the groups of students whom a researcher
conducted the study Junior High School students are those students whom the
researcher chooses as respondents of this study of English Proficiency.
Private High School- Refers to the private institution wherein the students are
studying. It stands for Mount Carmel College of Casiguran which is one of the
private school in Casiguran Aurora.
