1 About this document

1.1 Contents

The AIR application you with an information research system in the Aftersales area that maps technical and
commercial service data in a single system.

Searching for information is significantly quicker and easier thanks to the application, allowing you to devote
more time to customer care and completing tasks in the workshop.

AIR can be called up by other applications with transferred parameters and then displays specific information
for the case in question. For example, vehicle data (vehicle identification number, diagnosis codes and fault
codes, etc.) can be transferred from ISTA to AIR.

Important:

 For users from the AOS portal (independent operator) the repair history can only be called up
using ISTA.

 The warranty history is not available to AOS users.

 The AIR Client is not available to AOS users as this requires communication with the local
Dealer Management System, released by BMW.

You can find a detailed description of ISPI Next in the "reader's guide" to the ISPI Next documentation.

Areas marked with this symbol provide you with additional information.

1.2 Purpose

The AIR user guide gives the user an overview of the functionality provided by the AIR application and
allows the implementation of the following:

 Carrying out an efficient information search with AIR

 Recognising and understanding the work scope of services by AIR as well as its functionalities

 Correct and reasonable application of the AIR functionalities

 Correct interpretation of the search results

1.3 Target group

This document is intended for all users of the AIR software. This includes all employees who are interested
in information for the Services in Aftersales process:

 Authorised BMW Retailer, e.g. Service Advisor and Service Technician

 BMW Branches, e.g. Service Advisor and Service Technician

 independent operators, such as freelance workshops, police or training companies

 BMW Internal

2 General operation of the application

The operating concept of AIR is clearly structured and ensures that similar actions take place in the same
way, even for different content.

This increases the ease of use of AIR and its functions. The AIR user interface is configured in the same way
on all end devices and offers the same functionality. The basic elements for the operation of AIR are
explained in detail below.

2.1 Header

An unchanging header is located at the top area of every AIR page. It consists of the navigation, watchlist,
feedback and language setting areas. Clicking the AIR logo (Figure "AIR header, item 1) always returns you
to the start page, irrespective of what page you are on.

Figure 1 AIR header

2.1.1 Navigation field: back to previous pages

Frequently, you might need to return to a page you visited previously. The Air header contains the navigation
buttons "Back"(<) and "Next" (>) (Figure "AIR header", item 4), which allow the user to return to pages that
have been visited previously and also revisit pages that have been left as a result. The original pages are
restored in the same form as when they were left.
BMW Group Page 11
AIR user guide Version 18.1.a of 295

Clicking the "Next/Back" buttons (Figure "AIR header", item 4) and holding the mouse button down enables
jumping to pages that are several steps back.

Do not use the browser's "Back" button to go back to earlier pages, instead always use the AIR
navigation history in the upper section of the display screen.

2.1.2 Watchlist

The watchlist (Figure "AIR header, item 5) function makes it possible to collect information objects related to
the vehicle for use at a later date. In general, information from different detailed views can be added to the
bookmark list.

A detailed overview of the functionality can be found under the watchlist (Section “Watchlist”).

2.1.3 Feedback form

Clicking the "Feedback" button (Figure "AIR header", item 2) opens a web-based form, giving you the
opportunity to send feedback to the AIR team. The form contains free text entries and multiple choice
questions.

2.1.4 Setting

On the right edge of the AIR header you can find the button for entering settings (Figure "AIR header", item
3). For detailed information about settings, see the Settings section of the guide

2.1.5 Full-screen mode

AIR changes to full-screen mode by clicking on the symbol, see item 6.

2.1.6 Closing the application

Clicking on item 7 closes the AIR application.

2.2 Toolbar
BMW Group Page 12
AIR user guide Version 18.1.a of 295

The toolbar is a permanent element of AIR and is located directly below the header. Here, depending on the
dialog opened, you will find various interaction components which are explained briefly below.

Figure 2 AIR toolbar

1. “Reset vehicle identification number” button (figure "AIR toolbar", mark 1)

Clicking this button deletes the displayed vehicle identification number and takes you back to the AIR
start page.

2. “Vehicle” button (Figure "AIR toolbar", item 2)

Display of the current vehicle context and jump to the detailed vehicle view.

3. "Search area" button (Figure "AIR toolbar", item 3)

The search area consists of an input box and a "Search" button with a magnifying glass icon.
AIR allows searches to be performed for any keywords. These can be entered in the input field. The
search is executed by pressing the "Search" button. The search finds all hits in all available measures
and vehicles, taking into account the contracts and market classification of the current user. The search
returns all matching, as well as related results of a search term. Keywords can also be entered using
placeholders. In this case, the flexible portion of a search term is replaced by an "*" (asterisk).
Consequently, entering “engine*” would find not only “engine” but also “engine control”.

4. Page navigation (Navigation of the search results) (Figure "AIR toolbar", item 4).

5. “Watchlist” button (Figure "AIR toolbar", item 5)

Using this button, selected objects of the Watchlist can be added.

6. "Measures" button (Figure "AIR toolbar", item 6)

This button is used as filter and allows you to restrict the search to one measure. Clicking a measure
transfers this automatically to the search box. If you want to change the measure, simply click a different
measure.

2.3 Displaying the searched-for content

BMW Group Page 13
AIR user guide Version 18.1.a of 295

Content that corresponds to the search criteria is presented in AIR clearly and in a comprehensible manner.
The search query is expanded to target the best possible hits. This is why the search term is not always
contained in the results.

The functions the user can use to manage the display are always the same, even for different content.

There are two different methods available to present the content:

 The list view briefly presents the search results as a list

 The detailed view presents an individual search result in detail

Both presentation methods are explained below.

2.3.1 List view (hit list) - Overview of the search results

Figure 3 Hit list

Several hits are displayed as a list. Every entry has a title and, if necessary, other brief information (item 2).
Search results consisting of many hits are restricted to a specific number. These can then be extended using
the buttons (item 4). The total number of hits (results) is specified on the left side (item 1).
BMW Group Page 14
AIR user guide Version 18.1.a of 295

You can see the detailed view of an individual hit in the search result by clicking the corresponding list entry
(item 2).

The list can be restricted using the filter menu on the left side (item 3). The filters on the toolbar cannot be
selected for a search without vehicle identification number.

2.3.2 Filtering the hit list

2.3.2.1 Refining the list by applying a filter

The filters offered in the filter menu are arranged hierarchically. The "+" "-" symbols next to the filters indicate
that you can expand and collapse them. You can click on the entries in the filter menu to navigate through
the filter hierarchy (Figure “Limiting the list of results“, item 2). The entries displayed in the hierarchy either
contain more subentries themselves, which can be displayed by another click, or directly refine the hit list
when they are selected (Figure “Limiting the list of results“, item 3). Clicking on an entry that has already
been selected removes the corresponding filter, so that the number of hits is then increased. Along with a
filter option, the respective number of hits assigned to a group is displayed.

2.3.2.2 Limiting the list using free text entry

The search offers you the option to limit the list of results by means of another text search. To carry out a
search query, enter the desired text in the input box (Figure “Limiting the list of results“, item 1) and click on
the search button next to it on the right. The list of results is reduced to the new number of hits.

The free text search option takes into consideration the set filters in the search and shows the results
accordingly.
BMW Group Page 15
AIR user guide Version 18.1.a of 295

2.3.3 Details view - detailed information

The detailed view shows additional information about a vehicle. The toolbar contains interaction
components, such as the Search (item 4), the deletion of the current vehicle, and the watchlist.
BMW Group Page 16
AIR user guide Version 18.1.a of 295

Figure 4 “Vehicle” detailed view

The content area (Figure“Vehicle” detailed view, item 1) provides a detailed overview of the selected
information object. Furthermore, the print operation can be initiated on the stored printer by clicking the
printer symbol (item 3).

Various sections with supplementary information can be opened or closed, default setting for all of these is
open. These sections, identified as accordion entries, are created as dynamic list of contents (item 2).
Clicking a category (item 2) takes you directly to the desired content.

On the toolbar (Figure ""Vehicle" detailed view", item 5), you can set filter to further restrict the search. When
you click the button the number of hits that are available on the linked list page appears on the button after a
short time; if the exact number of hits is not currently measured a question mark appears. In each case,
clicking displays the content, which is available in the context of the currently displayed details. The buttons
BMW Group Page 17
AIR user guide Version 18.1.a of 295

are deactivated if a situation exists where a jump is not possible. An additional message text provides
information about the cause.

In addition, the filter can be further restricted by entering a search term (Figure ""Vehicle" detailed view", item
4). To carry out a search query, enter the desired text in the input box and click on the search button next to
it on the right.

2.3.4 Display keyboard

For operation on ISID, AIR is set up so that a keyboard (Figure "Windows display keyboard“) is displayed
immediately after clicking in a text field. This setting can be changed at any time via the "settings" button. If
the keyboard is not displayed, it must be deselected under Settings.

Figure 5 Windows display keyboard

2.3.5 Context filter

If you jump from a detailed view to linked contents (Figure "Vehicle" detailed view" in Chapter "Detailed view:
Detailed information", mark 4), a context filter is used in the following list view. This filter restricts the results
list in relation to the contents of the detailed view.

Context filters are always shown on the left in the list view (Figure "Hit list with restriction of a context filter",
item 1). By pressing the “Remove context filter" button you can remove the context filter. Alternatively, the
filter can also be removed by clicking again on the checkmark.

You can additionally restrict the hit list already restricted by an active context filter by selecting further filters
from the filter menu.
BMW Group Page 18
AIR user guide Version 18.1.a of 295

The context filter is not available when jumping from the vehicle details page.

Figure 6 List of results with restriction of a context filter

2.4 Watchlist

The watchlist function allows you to collect information objects related to the vehicle for use at a later date.
Generally, information from various detail views can be transferred to the watchlist. Flat rate units, defects,
repairs, packages, measures (or service bulletins), plate entities, maintenance schedules and repair
instructions are currently supported.

The watchlist is divided into two areas: the free research and Service Cases. Initially, only unrestricted
searching is visible; a service case is only displayed when information has been assigned.

2.4.1 Calling up the bookmark list

Call up the watchlist by clicking on the “Watchlist” button (Figure “ Calling up the watchlist from the header“,
item 1).
BMW Group Page 19

Figure 7 Calling up the watchlist list from the header

This function is only available if a vehicle was previously selected. If no vehicle is currently selected, the
"Watchlist" button is greyed out (Figure "Inactive watchlist button on left, active watchlist button on right"). If
the watchlist is active it is silhouetted in blue.

2.4.2 Adding/editing entries in the bookmark list

You can take information objects from the respective detail view using the "add" button on the watchlist. The
“Watchlist” button can be found in the toolbar (Figure "Addition information objects from the detail view",
item 1).

In addition a selection of the relevant information can be made using selection fields (Figure “Addition
information objects from the detail view“, item 2).

Adjust the selection of subordinate information objects in order to change a corresponding entry in the
watchlist then press the "Add" button again.

If changes have been made to the relevant information that is to be accepted in the watchlist,
when you skip to another page a warning will be issued by means of a confirmation dialog, if the
changes have not yet been transferred to the watchlist. It is possible to return to the detail view or
skip over it.

Figure 11 Addition information objects from the details view

To complete the transfer to the watchlist, the information object to be transferred must be assigned either a
service case with a related job (Figure “Assigning an information object to a service case“, item 1) or free
research (F Assigning an information object to a service case“, item 2). The maintenance schedule
information object is an exception to this: It is not assigned to a job, but directly to a service case instead.

when re-opened. However the values entered have no influence on the display on the “Flat rate unit items”
detailed view. After inputting a flat rate unit item, the text displayed beside the input box changes to "AW" in
the same way as an ordinary job item.

The description text for a working time position is limited to 100 characters. The flat rate unit value
entered must be a numerical value.

Figure 23 Vehicle search with type code

AIR enables the user to start a search with a type code.

To do so, enter the type code in the box (item 1) and click the magnifying glass to start the search.

PSDH/VDWH is going to introduce the "X" type of transmission for new type codes. This will take the place
of the previous "MECH" and "AUT" types of transmission for all new type codes. As a result of this, it will no
longer be possible to find out the type of transmission using the type code for new vehicles.
BMW Group Page 35
AIR user guide Version 18.1.a of 295

Figure 24 Virtual vehicle

It should be pointed out that a vehicle identified by type code is just a virtual vehicle.

For this reason not all information objects are available as they require a more precise identification of the
vehicle.

3.4 Vehicle search without vehicle

AIR offers the option to search without the vehicle. This can be selected on the start page (1).
BMW Group Page 36

3.5 Vehicle search using the number plate

AIR offers client users vehicle identification using the number plate (1). The search logic corresponds to that
of the local Dealer Management Systems. If a search is started using the number plate, AIR sends a request
to the Dealer Management System.

Only vehicles are displayed, that are created in the local Dealer Management System and have a valid
vehicle identification number. If no or a faulty vehicle identification number is saved in the Dealer
Management System, AIR displays a fault message.
BMW Group Page 38
AIR user guide Version 18.1.a of 295

If the full number plate is not known, you can also search with part of the number plate. Here it is important
that the search ends with an asterisk *. This asterisk * acts as a placeholder.

Figure 27 Search via number plate

If several vehicles are found in the Dealer Management System for a number plate, a window opens in which
the desired vehicle can be selected.

4 Information research

4.1 PuMA or parts technology measures

This scenario describes how you can search for PuMA or parts technology measures (TTS measures) for a
vehicle; in the US market, "Service Bulletins" is offered instead of PuMA measures (except Rolls-Royce
Motor Cars). As both search procedures are identical, we will concentrate on the description of the search for
PuMA measures.

4.1.1 Tolerance sample catalogue

AIR also displays tolerance sample catalogues under the PuMA measures filter in the header. Tolerance
sample catalogues define what level of faults should be accepted as a warranty case in delivered vehicles.
This should support Service Advisors when assessing customer complaints, so as to avoid unjustified
warranty cases. These documents are displayed in AIR as a PuMA measure and can be used in ISPA Next
and ISPA Mobile.

The PuMA measures filter (1) must be selected to call up the tolerance sample catalogue.

Figure 32 PuMA tolerance sample catalogue

BMW Group Page 44
AIR user guide Version 18.1.a of 295

In order to display the tolerance sample catalogues, you can enter tolerance sample* (1) in the free text
search to filter the results.

It is very important that the asterix * is entered after tolerance sample so that AIR can perform the search.

Figure 33 PuMA tolerance sample catalogue search

Alternatively you can search using the measure type.

BMW Group Page 45
AIR user guide Version 18.1.a of 295

Figure 34 Tolerance sample catalogue measure type

Then the desired tolerance sample catalogue can be selected.

In the respective entry PDF files are saved which contain the tolerance sample catalogue.

Clicking on the attachment (1) opens the PDF document.

4.1.2 Creating a PuMA or parts technology case

A basic prerequisite for creating a PuMA case is that there is a Service Case for the vehicle being used, or
one is created.

The user must first log in via S-Gate.

BMW Group Page 48
AIR user guide Version 18.1.a of 295

Figure 37 Logging in to create a PuMA case

There are two ways of creating a PuMA case, with the buttons for creating the PuMA case in AIR located in
different positions:

1. Service Case has been created by ISPA Next together with a job: the buttons are on the "job level"
BMW Group Page 49

Using the vehicle identification number you can determine the associated vehicle according to the
description (Section "Vehicle search via the vehicle identification number").

4.1.5 Show PuMA or parts technology measures - Step 2 - PuMA measures relating to vehicle
BMW Group Page 51
AIR user guide Version 18.1.a of 295

If you now click on the "PuMA measures" button (Figure ""Vehicle details page", item 1) on the vehicle
details page, all suitable PuMA and TTS measures for this vehicle are displayed. All measures are not
translated in all languages. If a measure is not available in the user language, it is displayed in another
language – preferably in English.

Figure 40 Vehicle details page

4.1.6 PuMA or parts technology measures - Step 3 - Restrict search

In order to find the correct PuMA and TTS measures of the vehicle from the complete list of PuMA
measures, you can refine the list according to additional criteria. This is performed with the filter menu to the
left of the results list. On the one hand by selecting the “Measure type” filter (Figure "List of measures for a
selected vehicle", item 3) you can restrict the list of PuMA or TTSmeasures, on the other hand you have the
ability to filter PuMA and TTS- measures according to the fault location (Figure "List of measures for a
selected vehicle ", item 2).
BMW Group Page 52
AIR user guide Version 18.1.a of 295

Figure 41 List of measures for selected vehicle.

The PuMA measures can be narrowed down further by clicking on Production date (1). If you select the
Production date field, the PuMA measures are limited to a particular day. This means that only currently valid
PuMA measures are displayed. No other PuMA measures are displayed.
BMW Group Page 53
AIR user guide Version 18.1.a of 295

Figure 42 Narrowing down PuMA measures using production date

The filtering is carried out by gradually refining and selecting the areas in which a multiple selection is
possible.

For example, it is possible to first select "Fault location", then "2x – Drive" and then "24 – Automatic
transmission". On the bottommost level you can make your (multiple) selection by clicking the selection field
(Figure "“Selecting filter criteria from the engine subgroup“", item 1).
BMW Group Page 54

4.1.7 Select PuMA or parts technology measures - Step 4 - Suitable PuMA measure

Now you can see a list of PuMA measures for the vehicle, refined by the selected filter criteria, is displayed.
In this list, you can jump to the respective detailed view by clicking on individual entries (Figure "Selecting
filter criteria from the engine subgroup ", item 2).

The cause, the actual PuMA measure and the validity information are displayed in the "PuMA measure"
detailed view (Figure ""PuMA measures" detailed view, item 1, 2 and 3). You can open the areas individually;
by default, all areas are displayed open. With the "Back" button (Figure ""PuMA measures" detailed view",
item 5) you can switch back to the "PuMA measures" list view (Figure "List of measures for a selected
vehicle" in Section "PuMA or TTS measures - Step 3 - Restrict search"). You can print out the selected

4.2 Repair instructions

4.2.1 Navigation

The following scenario demonstrates how to search for a vehicle's technical service data. Repair instructions
are used as an example.

4.2.1.1 Navigation - Initial situation

BMW Group Page 56
AIR user guide Version 18.1.a of 295

Technical service data, for example a repair instruction, needs to be found for a vehicle (vehicle identification
number available).

4.2.1.2 Navigation - step 1 - Searching for the vehicle

Enter the vehicle identification number (e.g. "C728092") in the AIR start page (Figure "Searching for the
vehicle with the vehicle identification number C728092", item 1). After a click on the “Search” button, AIR
performs the search.

Figure 45 Searching for the vehicle with the Vehicle identification number 0C28511

Since the search for a vehicle identification number always yields an unique result, no results list is
displayed. AIR jumps directly to the details page of the vehicle.

4.2.1.3 Navigation - step 2 - Displaying the repair instructions for the vehicle

Click on the "Repair instructions" button in the vehicle details page (Figure "Vehicle details page", item 1).
AIR switches to the “Repair instructions” list view and displays all repair instructions available for this vehicle.
BMW Group Page 57
AIR user guide Version 18.1.a of 295

Figure 46 Vehicle details page

4.2.1.4 Navigation - step 3 - Restrict search

Refine the list of repair instructions according to additional criteria using the filter menu on the left of the
results list (Figure “List of repair instructions for the selected vehicle“, item 1). When carrying out a search for
repair instructions, it is useful to filter according to main group / subgroup. This allows you to quickly find the
queried repair instructions.
BMW Group Page 58
AIR user guide Version 18.1.a of 295

Figure 47 List of repair instructions for the selected vehicle

Filtering in AIR is performed by refining and selecting the areas in a step-by-step process. Multiple selection
is possible.

For example, you can select "63 - Lights". On the bottommost level you can make your (multiple) selection
by clicking the selection field (Figure "“Selecting filter criteria from the engine subgroup lights“", item 1).
Afterwards the hit list is reloaded and contains then only the desired entries.
BMW Group Page 59
AIR user guide Version 18.1.a of 295

Figure 48 Selecting filter criteria from the Lights subgroup

4.2.1.5 Navigation - step 4 - Select suitable repair instructions

Upon successful filtering, AIR displays a refined list of repair instructions for the vehicle as per the selected
filter criteria. In this list, you can jump to the respective detailed view by clicking on individual entries (Figure
"Selecting filter criteria from the engine subgroup lights" "Navigation - step 3 - Restrict search", mark 2).

Contents of the repair instructions are displayed in the detailed view (Figure “ “Repair instructions - detailed
view“, item 2). Using the “Back” button (Figure ““Repair instructions” - detailed view“, item 1) you can return
to the repair instructions list. If the execution of a repair is relevant for TeileClearing, a part clearing symbol
(Figure ""Repair manual" - detailed view, item 4) appears in the title bar. Further information can be found
under TeileClearing (Section "Parts Clearing" 1.7.1).

In the left column, AIR provides you with the option of navigating to other linked contents such as packages,
flat rate units and repairs (Figure ""Repair manual"-- detailed view", item 3). Certain repair instructions also
BMW Group Page 60
AIR user guide Version 18.1.a of 295

contain overviews of special tools used, technical data and tightening torques as linked contents (Figure
“Repair instructions with accordion for preliminary work, main work and reworking“, item 1).

Figure 49 “Repair instructions” - detailed view

Documents containing further information for a repair instruction are displayed by links stored in blue (Figure
“Repair instructions with linking and navigation history“, item 1). You may call up the linked documents via
these links. AIR displays the navigation history at the top left (Figure “Repair instructions with linking and
navigation history“, item 2). You may jump back to the previous documents via the displayed navigation
history.
BMW Group Page 61
AIR user guide Version 18.1.a of 295

Figure 50 Repair instructions with linking and navigation history

Documents can be structured across several levels. The first level of division is represented by accordions.
Certain repair instructions divide their work steps, for example into preliminary work, main work and
reworking (Figure “Repair instructions with accordion for preliminary work, main work and reworking“, item 2)
The second level of division is represented by links within an accordion. They enable jumping to sub-
documents. By clicking on a link, you can jump to the view of the sub-document.. Using two navigation
buttons (Figure “View for a subtask with navigation buttons“, item 1), it is possible to navigate to the previous
or next subdocument. This enables reading continuously without jumping back to the overview of the
document.

4.2.2 Print configurer

For passenger car premium repair instructions as well as for motorcycle repair instructions and workshop
installation instructions for motorcycles, the print configurer offers the ability to print out all work tasks listed
in the accordion in one document. For each individual work tasks, the option is provided as to whether only
the designation of the work tasks is to be printed or alternatively the detailed work task description is to be
included.

4.2.2.1 Print configurator - Initial situation

You have opened passenger car premium repair instructions, motorcycle repair instructions or workshop
installation instructions for a motorcycle and see the work task accordion in front of you on the screen.
BMW Group Page 64
AIR user guide Version 18.1.a of 295

4.2.2.2 Print configurator - step 1 - Open the Print configurator

The print configurator is started by clicking on the "Print" button in the toolbar. A dialog is opened with its own
toolbar (Figure "Print configurator dialogue", item 1), any available advance information on the selected
repair instruction (Figure "Print configurator dialogue", item 2) as well as the activity accordion (Figure "Print
configurator dialogue", item 3).

In addition, three new selection boxes are integrated in the print configurator (item 4). If one of the new
selection boxes is activated, the associated information object is appended at the end of the printout of the
repair manual.

By default, the select boxes are deactivated, and the printing sequence corresponds to the sequence of the
selection boxes.

The sequence within the information objet corresponds to the sequence of the display in AIR (sequence
matches the usage in the premium repair manual)

Figure 53 Print configurator dialogue

BMW Group Page 65
AIR user guide Version 18.1.a of 295

4.2.2.3 Print configurator - step 2 - Configuration of the document to print

All activities within the activity accordion have selection fields. A selection field that is selected means that a
detailed activity description is printed, while a selection field that is deselected means that only the
designation of the activity displayed in the accordion is printed. The selection for each activity can be
changed by clicking on the corresponding selection field. When the print configurer is started, all main work
tasks are always selected for detailed print, while all preliminary work and follow-up work is deselected. By
clicking on the selection field in the heading of an accordion entry you can simultaneously select or deselect
all the activities contained in this section for detailed printing.

Figure 54 Print configurer toolbar

In the toolbar of the dialog there are four more buttons with additional functionality. Clicking on the "Select
all" button (Figure “Toolbar of print configurator“, item 1) selects all activities for detailed printing. Clicking on
the “Deselect all" button (Figure “Toolbar of print configurator“, item 2) selects all activities for detailed
printing.

If preliminary information about repairs is available, this is always displayed in the print configurator dialog
above the accordion and printed in the print document. The prior information can not be deselected for
printing.

Within the repair instructions, individual activities can contain safety information for the service technician. If
work tasks are selected in the print configurer and contain safety information, this also appears on the
printout.

Furthermore the safety information selection field (Figure “ Toolbar of print configurator“, item 3) gives the
option of configuring a summary of the safety information at the start of the document. In this way you can
ensure that safety information from work tasks that are not selected also appears on the printout. If the
selection field is selected, all the safety information that appears in the individual activities of the repair
instructions is printed in a bundle at the start of the document. It is irrelevant whether the workstep to which
BMW Group Page 66
AIR user guide Version 18.1.a of 295

safety information is associated is selected for the detailed printout or not. Each page of the printout
additionally contains information indicating that all safety information is located at the beginning of the
document. If the selection field is deselected, there is merely a note at the start of the document and on
every page of the printout to say that the safety information is not being fully printed at the request of the
user.

The safety information selection field can be selected and deselected by clicking on the selection field or the
text beside it. When the print configurer is started, the printing out of safety information is selected by default.

The deselection of the print option for safety information can result in safety-relevant information
not appearing in the printout.

Regardless of whether the safety information selection field is selected or deselected, all the safety
information from activities that were selected for detailed printing are also printed in the relevant place within
the activity.

4.2.2.4 Print configurator - step 3 - Final printing of the document

By clicking on the "Print" button (Figure "“Toolbar of print configurator”" in section"Print configurator - step 2 -
Configuration of the document to print", item 4) in the toolbar of the dialogue, the configuration of the print
document is ended and the normal printer function of your browser starts. The document to printed has then
the following structure.

At the top of the first page of the printout there is information on the dealer and the selected vehicle or
motorcycle. A banner follows which offers information on the print variant selected for the safety information.
This banner is reproduced again as a header on every following page. If the printer option for the safety
information has been selected, the collected safety information from all work tasks associated to the repairs
follows. Following this, if it is available, comes the prior information on the selected repairs. At the end the
work tasks follow in the same order as in the accordion, although either only the designation of the work
tasks (if deselected) or a detailed description of the work tasks (if selected) is printed depending on the
selection made for individual work tasks in the print configurer.

4.2.3 Overall view

For passenger car premium repair instructions as well as for motorcycle repair instructions and workshop
installation instructions for motorcycles, you have the option to display on one screen all subwork tasks
(including prior information) of the selected repair instructions in the order that they are to be performed. By
clicking on the "Overall view" button in the toolbar of the repair instructions (Figure “Toolbar of overall view“,
item 1) the overall view of the repair instructions appears with all details.

4.3 Technical Campaigns

If technical campaigns are available for a vehicle, AIR informs you via a note next to the vehicle image
(Figure ""Vehicle details page for vehicle with open Technical Campaign", item 1). The "Technical
Campaigns" accordion entry (Figure "Vehicle details page for vehicle with open Technical Campaign", item
2) provides you with an overview of the current technical campaigns. In the expanded state, AIR tabularly
lists all available Technical Campaigns that are open and in progress.

Figure 57 Vehicle details page with Technical Campaign

Each table entry for a Technical Campaign includes a "Details" button (Figure "Vehicle details page for
vehicle with Technical Campaign", item 3). By clicking on the "detail" buttons, AIR opens a dialog with further
details on the Technical Campaign (Figure “Dialog for Technical Campaign with further details (all markets
except US)“). In the US market, the details will be opened in the form of a service bulletin (Figure "Dialogue
for Technical Campaign with further details (US market)") (except for the Rolls-Royce Motor Cars brand). If
SI defects are linked to the technical campaign, it is possible to jump to them with the "SI defect codes"
button (Figure "Vehicle details page with open Technical Campaign", item 4).

4.3.1 Reserved Technical Campaigns

Technical Campaigns can be reserved by a Retailer, so that other Retailers cannot carry out the reserved
Technical Campaign. Since there is always the possibility that customers with an open Technical campaign
have to drive into an unknown Retailer while in transit, the reserving Retailer is displayed in AIR, see item 1.
Until now, only the reserving Retailer could see that they had made the reservation, but now all users can
see that a reservation exists (status "Active"). During a service visit, Retailers can now check whether a
Technical Campaign exists and if this is booked by another Retailer. If the Technical Campaign must be
carried out urgently, the reserving Retailer can be contacted and asked to release the Technical Campaign.

4.5 Vehicle components

4.5.1 Vehicle components - step 1 - Displaying the parts for the vehicle

In the vehicle details page, click the "Parts" button on the "toolbar" (Figure "Vehicle details page", item 1).
AIR changes the list view and displays for you all picture panels suitable for the basic type of this vehicle.
BMW Group Page 74

Figure 63 Vehicle details page

4.5.2 Vehicle components - step 2 - Restrict search

Refine the list of parts according to additional criteria using the filter menu on the left of the results list (Figure
“List of picture panels for a vehicle“, item 1).
BMW Group Page 75
AIR user guide Version 18.1.a of 295

Figure 64 Picture panel list for a vehicle

The filtering is carried out by gradually refining and selecting the Unified Parts Group, whereby multiple
selection is possible.

For example, you can first select "54 – Slide/tilt sunroof / convertible top". On the bottommost level you can
make your (multiple) selection by clicking the selection field (Figure "“Selecting filter criteria from the engine
subgroup slide/tilt sunroof/ convertible top", item 1).
BMW Group Page 76
AIR user guide Version 18.1.a of 295

Figure 65 Selecting filter criteria from the slide/tilt sunroof/convertible top subgroup

You now see a list of picture panels for the vehicle restricted according to the selected filter criteria. In this
list, you can jump to the respective detailed view by clicking on individual entries (Figure "Selecting filter
criteria from the engine subgroup slide/tilt sunroof/ convertible top", item 2).

4.5.3 Vehicle components - step 3 - Determine part numbers

In the "Picture panel" detailed view (Figure "Picture panel detailed view"), you will find detailed information
about the picture panel and about the parts contained in the graphic. The parts information displayed
corresponds to the vehicle equipment and is identical to the information you know from the EPC.
Retrofittings are not taken into account.
BMW Group Page 77
AIR user guide Version 18.1.a of 295

Figure 66 Picture panel detailed view

In the parts listing under the picture panel you may select or deselect the desired parts (Figure "Picture panel
detailed view", item 1) and specify the desired quantity (Figure "Picture panel detailed view", item 2). You
may now add these parts to the bookmark list as usual. If a part is relevant for TeileClearing, a TeileClearing
symbol is displayed (Figure "Picture panel detailed view", item 3). Further information can be found under
TeileClearing (Section “TeileClearing”).

Using the "Zoom" buttons (Figure "Picture panel detailed view", item 4) you can change the display size of
the graphic.

In the graphic you can move the mouse over each of the picture number block hotspots (Figure "Picture
panel detailed view", item 5) to get information about the particular picture number block designation and
part number. If the picture number block is not installed in the present vehicle, a note on this is displayed.

A click on the picture number block hotspot marks all entries associated with the selection both in the graphic
as well as in the parts list beneath the picture panel. This applies similarly in reverse by clicking on a part in
the pars list.
BMW Group Page 78
AIR user guide Version 18.1.a of 295

On the bookmark list, parts designations are always displayed in the language they were added to
the bookmark list in. This means that if you call up an existing watchlist you will see parts on the
watchlist in the language they were originally added to that watchlist in. For this reason, the
designation may be displayed in a different language than the current language setting.

4.5.4 Parts Clearing

If a TeileClearing action exists for a part then this is displayed in the form of a TC icon (TeileClearing icon)
(Figure "”Picture panel” detailed view" in section "Vehicle components - step 3 - Determine part numbers",
mark 3). The TeileClearing information is updated daily, and is also vehicle and market-specific.

In addition, the TC icon will be shown on all information objects part of a TeileClearing action:

 Parts (Figure "”Picture panel” detailed view" in section "Vehicle components - step 3 - Determine part
numbers", mark 3).

 Work units.

 Packages (Figure ""Package" detailed view with a TeileClearing relevant part" in Section "Packages -
Step 4 - Select package", item 1).

 Repair manuals (Figure ""Repair manual" - detailed view in Section "Navigation - Step 4 - Select suitable
repair manual", item 4).

 Repair overviews (in Section "Repairs - Notes on diagnosis relevance", item 1).

All information necessary for your specific application is in the appropriate place and so previous and thus far
necessary research effort to determine of the validity of the corresponding TeileClearing-action is not
necessary.

4.6 Packages

4.6.1 Packages - Initial situation

The service technician has a task to carry out, e.g. "Replacing a water pump”. He wants to find a suitable
package for this task.

4.6.2 Packages - step 1 - Vehicle search

BMW Group Page 79
AIR user guide Version 18.1.a of 295

Using the vehicle identification number, you can determine the associated vehicle (Section "Search for
vehicle with vehicle identification number").

4.6.3 Packages - step 2 - Selecting the associated work packages

In the "Vehicle" detailed view on the right side under "Packages" (Figure "Vehicle detailed view,", item 1) it is
possible to jump to linked Service Repair Packages (SRP) as well as warranty repair packages (WRP) for
this vehicle.

4.6.4 Packages - step 3 - Restrict search

In order to find the packages for replacing a water pump in the hits, these can be refined. This can be done
using the filter menu on the left of the hit list (Figure “List of packages for selected vehicle“, item 2).
BMW Group Page 81
AIR user guide Version 18.1.a of 295

Figure 69 List of packages for selected vehicle

When carrying out a search for work packages, it is useful to filter according to main group / subgroup.

The filtering is carried out by gradually refining and selecting the areas in which a multiple selection is
possible.

After correctly selecting the filter (Figure “Selecting filter criteria from the engine subgroup , item 1) the hit list
is reloaded and now contains the desired entries only.

Figure 70 Selecting filter criteria from the engine subgroup

4.6.5 Packages - step 4 - Select package

Now the desired package can be selected from the refined list.

For example, you are interested in the Warranty and Repair Package (WRP) "11 51 504". By clicking on the
package (Figure "Selecting filter criteria from the engine subgroup" in Section "Packages - step 3 - Restrict
search", mark 2) you can switch to the “Packages” detailed view (Figure "Packages detailed view").

All detailed information on a package is displayed in the “Packages” detailed view. By clicking on "Packages"
(Figure "Package detailed view", item 4) you can switch to the appropriate (SRP).

4.6.6 Packages - Step 5 - Selecting packages according to package type

AIR offers a selection of different package types, including:

 WRP = Warranty repair package

 MKP = Marketing package

 SRP = Service Repair Package

 SIP = Service Inclusive package

 VLP = Value line package

These package types are vehicle and market specific. Not every package type is available in every market
and for every vehicle.

The warranty repair package should preferably be used during the warranty period.

The marketing package can contain dealer-specific and lighthouse (LH) marketing campaigns.
BMW Group Page 85
AIR user guide Version 18.1.a of 295

The Service Inclusive package can be selected, if a valid service contract exists for the vehicle.

The value line package is interesting for older vehicles, which are tied to BMW Service by particularly
attractive package prices.

4.7 Retrofits

4.7.1 Definition of retrofittings

Retrofits are optional equipment not fitted ex works, but fitted to the vehicle retroactively. AIR only displays
retrofits performed with an encoding (retrofits relevant for coding).

4.7.2 Fitted retrofits

Installed retrofittings for a vehicle can be found in the "Vehicle" detailed view by scrolling to the "Optional
equipment" accordion entry; alternatively you can jump to it directly in the dynamic list of contents on the left
edge (item 1). The left column of an "Optional equipments" accordion contains all optional equipment fitted
ex works. In addition written supplementary control words (E-Words) and customer service words (K-Words)
are displayed in the left column ex works. The right column lists previously fitted retrofits. If not data is
available or no retrofits were fitted to the vehicle, an appropriate message is displayed.

In general, the descriptions of the retrofits are displayed in the language set in AIR. If no descriptions are
available in the set language, the retrofits are displayed in English.
BMW Group Page 88
AIR user guide Version 18.1.a of 295

Figure 76 "Vehicle" detailed view with optional equipments

4.7.3 Possible retrofitting

Retrofits that are available for the current vehicle, but have not yet been fitted, are displayed in the “Possible
retrofitting" accordion entry (Figure ““Possible retrofitting on the “Vehicle” detailed view“, item 1). Here, AIR
differentiates again between available retrofits and potentially available retrofits.

Potentially available means that it is not possible to clearly determine whether the retrofit may be fitted since
fitting is dependent on the software version of the control unit. To confirm this, validation via ISTA/P is
necessary.

Figure 77 Possible retrofitting on the “Vehicle” detailed view

4.8 Information on faults

On the vehicle details page you will find an "Information on faults" accordion entry (Figure ""Information on
faults" accordion entry"). If you scroll to this section, the existing information on faults for the selected vehicle
BMW Group Page 90
AIR user guide Version 18.1.a of 295

is displayed.

Figure 78 “Information on faults” accordion entry

The information on faults is subdivided according to workshop and service consultation and are
correspondingly shown by two separate tables. The number of diagnosis codes, fault codes and fault
patterns compiled in the workshop are displayed for you in the workshop as well as the Service Consultation
table (Figure ““Information on faults” accordion entry“, item 1 and 2). Using the "Arrow" buttons (Figure
"“Information on faults” accordion entry", item 3) you can open a dialogue in which the corresponding codes
or fault patterns are stored with information.

You can navigate the searched content using the "PuMA measures" button as well as the "repair" button
(Figure "“Information on faults” accordion entry", item 4). The selection fields selected in the table show you
which information on faults is used to make the jump.

4.9 Navigation maps

The vehicle details page contains a "Navigation map" accordion entry (Figure ""Vehicle details page" with
"Navigation map" accordion entry"). This accordion entry shows information on the navigation maps fitted in
the vehicle, the existing subscriptions and possible updates.
BMW Group Page 91
AIR user guide Version 18.1.a of 295

The first column shows the installed navigation map detected from the central system. As maps can also be
manually brought into vehicle, it can be the case that the map detected does not correspond to the actual
map installed in the vehicle. The time of installation of the displayed map is represented by a note.

In some cases, the map installed can not clearly be determined even though information is
available on compatible navigation maps. In these cases additional information appears, that the
precise map could not be determined, and probably one of the displayed maps is installed. This
may lead to more than one possible navigation map being shown.

The second column displays the matching enabling code, if available. In the case of newer enabling codes,
the validity of the enabling code will be displayed here. In older enabling codes the message "Update
possible" indicates that a newer free map can be installed. The message "no valid subscription available"
means that the navigation map is already at the status of the enabling code.

The two columns that follow show, respectively, the latest free of charge navigation map (according to the
enabling code) and a navigation map subject to a fee. If a map should be available in multiple versions (such
as the East and West Europe map), both versions are represented.

Navigation maps can be updated free of charge, if the version of the navigation map is within the period of
the subscription. Keep in mind for this however that in this case expense is incurred due to the effort of
introducing the new map. If the map is not within the period of the subscription, then the customer can
acquire an enabling code for this at a charge. The customer can choose between a one-time update and a
subscription update.
BMW Group Page 92
AIR user guide Version 18.1.a of 295

Figure 79 Vehicle details page with a "Navigation map" accordion entry

A map update is symbolised by a button with the navigation map name, independent of whether the update
is with or without charge. By clicking on the “Update” button (Figure "“Vehicle” detailed view with “Navigation
maps” accordion entry") the detail view is called up to the linked navigation map (Figure "“Navigation maps”
detailed view with flat rate unit item and two possible parts"). The flat rate unit for the installation of the map
data is listed on the detailed view. Navigation maps, the validity of which is not covered with an enabling
code, parts can also appear, that correspond to e.g. a single software update (valid for 1 month) or a
subscription. The flat rate units and navigation map parts can be transferred to the watchlist. They are
assigned in the navigation map watchlist. A navigation map cannot be transmitted to ISPA.

4.10 Service contracts

The vehicle details page contains a "Service contracts" accordion entry (Figure ""Vehicle details page with
open "Service contracts" accordion entry", item 1). If active service contracts are available for the selected
vehicle a note is displayed below the vehicle information (Figure ""Vehicle details page with open "Service
contracts" accordion entry", item 4). The "Service contracts" accordion entry shows you the existing service
contracts and related information (Figure ""Vehicle details page with open "Service contracts" accordion
entry", item 2). The details of the contract can be viewed by pressing the "Arrow" button (Figure ""Vehicle
details page with open "Service contracts" accordion entry", item 3). Clicking on item 5 automatically displays
the applicable packages for the existing service contract.

4.11.1 DMS price query and DMS transmission

In order to be able to use the DMS price query and the transmission into DMS, the DMS must be connected
to AIR. The configuration can be carried out by your administrator under settings in AIR. Additional
information can be found in the ISPI administrator handbook. In order to query prices and parts availabilities
in the local DMS, one click on the DMS symbol (mark 1) is sufficient. AIR now sends a request to the local
DMS and shows the price and the parts availability. The user is therefore always informed about the local
parts inventory and price. Also dealer-specific parts such as engine oil, brake fluid and cleaning fluid,
provided they have been entered in the DMS, are automatically transferred into the Service Case.

4.11.5 Roll-independent communication with the Service Case

Via the Service Case, the ISPI application (ISPA Next, ISPA Mobile, ISTA und AIR) are connected to one
another. Selected comment fields can therefore be taken from here for communication between the
applications.

One example is the location of the vehicle in the car park. If the customer parks the vehicle in space 125 in
the car park, this information can be entered. The next employee can therefore see in the system where the
vehicle is parked.

If the vehicle is then moved away from space 125 into the workshop, this can also be noted. After the vehicle
has been removed from the workshop again, it is parked in space 83 and entered into the system.

Therefore, for each employee in the retailer it can be immediately seen in which space the customer vehicle
is parked.

This can be done analogously for all further comments, for instance job comment, case comment, etc.

4.11.6 FRU plausibility check

In the Service Case, the FRU plausibility check can also be carried out.

Every Service Case containing flat rate unit positions can be called up (item 1). The flat rates could have
been selected directly or added to the Service Case via packages or repairs.

It is now possible to add flat rate units from packages and repair overviews to the selection list for
transmission, in addition to separate flat rate units and flat rate units from flat rate groups in the selected
Service Case.

The sorting by jobs is retained.

The result of the warranty precheck should now be not only displayed, but also saved in the Service Case.

The plausibility check is only possible for catalogue flat rates, not for open working times.

You can use selection fields to select which flat rate unit positions should be checked.

4.15.2 Maintenance - Configuration

Maintenance schedules can be created either statically or dynamically. Both variants require information
prior to being created which can be entered by the user. The input is carried out via a multi-step dialog. The
dialogue opens as soon as a maintenance plan is selected in the list view (Figure "Maintenance plan
configuration - step 1: Select version").

You are asked to input the usage an several points during the configuration. You can enter these in both
kilometres as well as in miles. The unit of miles is pre-selected only in the markets of the USA and Great
Britain. For all other markets, the preselected unit is kilometres.

Depending on whether a dynamic or static maintenance schedule is to be created, the configuration of the
maintenance schedule encompasses up to five steps:

 Step 1: Selecting the version

 Step 2: Selecting the optional equipment

 Step 3: Entering the head data

 Step 4: Entering the service data (only for dynamic maintenance schedules)

 Step 5: Entering the service positions (only for dynamic maintenance schedules)

In the first step, you are shown a list of optional equipment that is available for the selected maintenance
schedule (Figure "Maintenance schedule configuration - step 2: Select optional equipment", item 1). The list
already contains the pre-selected optional equipment, which has been identified by the previous selection of
the vehicle. Optionally, you can select or deselect additional optional equipment (by clicking the selection
field in question). You can open up the next configuration step with a click on the "Continue" button (Figure
"Maintenance plan configuration - step 2: Select optional equipment", item 2).
BMW Group Page 147

Figure 138 Maintenance schedule configuration - Step 2: Selecting the optional equipment

In the third step, you can enter the optional header data ("Customer", "Number plate" and "Order number")
for the maintenance schedule (Figure "Maintenance schedule configuration - step 3: Header data of the
dynamic maintenance plan", item 1). The header data is displayed later on the "Maintenance schedule"
detailed view. You can open up the next configuration step again with a click on the "Continue" button
(Figure "Maintenance schedule configuration - step 3: Header data of the dynamic maintenance plan", item
3). To return to the previous configuration step, click the "Back" button (Figure "Maintenance schedule

Figure 139 Maintenance schedule configuration - Step 3: Head data of dynamic maintenance schedules

In the third step of configuring the maintenance schedule, you have to select the version. For the static
maintenance plan you also have the option to specify the usage (Figure "Maintenance schedule
configuration - step 3: Header data of the static maintenance schedule", item 1). You can enter the usage in
either kilometres or in miles.

Furthermore, instead of the "Continue" button, a "Create" button is now displayed (Figure "Maintenance
schedule configuration - step 3: Header data of the static maintenance schedule", item 2), as this is the last
configuration step in the maintenance schedule.

Figure 141 Maintenance schedule configuration - Step 4: Entering service data - 1

Depending on vehicle type, either input boxes for usage or operating hours are displayed. For vehicles with
the type code 0145, operating hours are displayed; for all other vehicles the usage is displayed.

The vehicle delivery date is filled in by AIR in advance. Depending on whether the first date of approval,
delivery date or production date is stored in the system, the vehicle transfer date is set according to the
following priority list:

1. First date of approval

2. Delivery date

3. Production date

Example: If there is no first date of approval, but rather a delivery date is known, then the vehicle transfer
date is initialised with the delivery date.
BMW Group Page 151
AIR user guide Version 18.1.a of 295

Underneath the service data, you can select the vehicle deployment if this is recorded in the maintenance
plan (Figure "Maintenance schedule configuration - step 4: Entering service data - 2", item 2). You can select
or deselect the vehicle deployment by clicking the selection field.

To return to the previous configuration step, click the "Back" button (Figure "Maintenance schedule
configuration - step 4: Entering service data - 1", item 4) you return again to the entry of the header data.
When you click on the “Continue” button (Figure "Maintenance schedule configuration - step 4: Entering
service data - 1", item 3), your entry will be checked and then the next configuration step will be displayed. If
the entry check fails, the incorrect boxes are marked in red and a corresponding note is displayed.

Figure 142 Maintenance schedule configuration - Step 4: Entering service data - 2

The entry check involves the following rules:

 Mandatory fields have been entered:

o Vehicle transfer date

o Date of the BMW service today

o Odometer reading or operating hours of today's BMW Service

BMW Group Page 152
AIR user guide Version 18.1.a of 295

 Date and usage (or operating hours) of the last BMW service are optional, as long as none of these
fields were filled in. If these fields are filled in, then the other field must also contain a value.

 Date and usage (or operating hours) of the next BMW service are optional, as long as none of these
fields were filled in. If these fields are filled in, then the other field must also contain a value.

 The values of the dates must be plausible: Production date < Vehicle delivery date < Date of last BMW
Service < Date of planned BMW Service, date of today's BMW Service.

 The date of the planned BMW Service may also be before the date of today's BMW Service

 The usages and operating hours must be plausible: Status of the last BMW Service < status of the
planned BMW Service, status of today’s BMW Service

 Usage or operating hours of the planned BMW Service can also be prior to the status of today’s BMW
Service

Figure 143 Maintenance schedule configuration - Step 5: Selecting service positions (1/2)

In the last configuration step you can select the service positions of the dynamic maintenance schedule. The
list of the positions that can be selected is subdivided in different areas:
BMW Group Page 153
AIR user guide Version 18.1.a of 295

 Maintenance steps to be carried out (figure "Maintenance schedule configuration - step 5: Selecting
service positions (1/2)", item 1) Due items, which should be carried out

 Maintenance items to be carried out soon (Figure "Maintenance plan configuration - step 5: Selecting
service positions (1/2)", item 2) items, which are to be carried out in the near future

 Non-due maintenance items (Figure "Maintenance plan configuration - step 5: Selecting service items
(1/2)", item 3)

All maintenance positions to be performed are already pre-selected. Maintenance positions which are due
soon or not due are not pre-selected. You can select or deselect an item by clicking the selection field. If two
service positions are in conflict with one another, then the conflicting positions are "deactivated" thus
preventing a selection that is conflicting.

Maintenance positions can also be designated as sensitive. Sensitive maintenance positions are displayed
to you in red text. If a maintenance schedule contains at least one sensitive maintenance item, an
explanatory note is displayed under item 2.

At the end of the page, a date and a kilometre interval for the next service appointment are suggested
(Figure "Maintenance plan configuration - step 5: Selecting service items (2/2)", item 2). Furthermore, the flat
rate units for all selected maintenance plan items are displayed as a total (Figure "Maintenance schedule
configuration - step 5: Selecting service items (2/2)", item 1). If you change the selection, then the sum is
recalculated.

With a click on the “Create” button (Figure "Maintenance plan configuration - step 5: Selecting service items
(1/2)", item 5), the dynamic maintenance plan is created. With the “Back” button (Figure "Maintenance
schedule configuration - Step 5: Selecting service items (1/2)", item 4) you return again to the service data
entry.

 Date and usage (or operating hours) of the planned BMW service (only for dynamic maintenance
schedules)

 Vehicle transfer date

Below the head and service data a list of positions to be checked and the selected service positions are
displayed. If you explicitly deselect the maintenance schedule positions due in the fifth step, then these are
shown to you at the end of the list. These entries do not have a selection field at the end of the line.

At the end of this list there is a placeholder for the signature of the service technician and the customer. The
signature of the customer is especially required on the printout of due but explicitly deselected maintenance
schedule positions.

Figure 147 Maintenance schedule - accordion and further functions

BMW Group Page 158
AIR user guide Version 18.1.a of 295

In the list of the maintenance schedule positions there can be positions that contain packages. These items
are shown as accordion, which is always displayed open. The package details for the associated
maintenance schedule position are also displayed (Figure "Maintenance schedule - accordion and further
functions", item 2). This view precisely matches to view of the “Package” detailed view – including the display
and selection option for alternative items and optional parts.

There can be packages, repair instructions and maintenance instructions linked to the maintenance
schedule. It is possible to navigate to the linked information using the buttons shown in (Figure “Maintenance
plan - accordion and other functions“, item 4).

As with all detailed views (Section "Detailed view: Detailed information") the print function is also available
here (Figure "Maintenance plan - accordion and further functions", item 6).

Figure 148 Printout of a maintenance schedule

Furthermore - like on the “Package” detailed view - you can query the prices and availabilities of the
packages or the items they contain, using a linked DMS. You can carry out the price query using the “DMS-
query" button (Figure “Maintenance plan - accordion and other functions, item 7). Following a successful
price query, you are shown the entire price for the maintenance schedule beneath the list of maintenance
BMW Group Page 159

positions. The price sum is computed according to the selected package positions. Only the price of the
selected positions is taken into consideration for computing the sum. If you change the selection, the sum is
re-computed. If the price of a selected package item is unknown, the total price of the maintenance schedule
is also unknown (displayed by "(–)").

You can carry out a maintenance configuration using the "Edit" button (Figure "Maintenance schedule -
accordion and other functions, item 8). Clicking the "Edit" button re-opens the dialogue for the maintenance
schedule. All input boxes are filled in with the already entered data.

You can put the configured maintenance plan on the watchlist using the watchlist button (Figure
“Maintenance plan - accordion and other functions”, item 5). You can also query the prices and availability
for a maintenance schedule on the watchlist – including the calculation of the entire sum for a maintenance
schedule.

4.16 Wiring diagrams

BMW Group Page 160
AIR user guide Version 18.1.a of 295

4.16.1 Wiring diagrams - Technical details

In the following you will find information regarding the basic understanding of wiring diagrams (functional
wiring diagram and component wiring diagram) and other diagnostic documents (installation location,
connector view, pin assignment, functional description and brief component description).

4.16.1.1 Wiring diagrams - Document types und Special features

Document types

The following information types are assigned with diagnostic documents:

 Functional wiring diagram (Identifier SSP-SSP): Wiring diagrams, which are anchored in the function
structure.

 Component wiring diagram (Identifier SSP-BTS): Wiring diagrams, which are anchored in the component
structure.

 Installation location(Identifier EBO-EBO): Graphics, which are anchored in the component structure.

 Connector view (Identifier STA-STA): Graphics, which are anchored in the component structure.

 Pin assignments (Identifier PIB-PIB): Documents, which are anchored in the component structure.

 Functional description (Identifier FUB-FUB): Documents, which are anchored in the function structure.

 Brief component description (Identifier FUB-FUB); Documents, which are anchored in the component
structure.

An identifier e.g. SSP-BTS-T6108059 is part of a diagnostic document number. With this identifier, the
document can be found in the user-defined search.

Specific features

The following special features apply to diagnostic documents:

 There are pin assignments only for control units with diagnostic capability that are not fully shown on the
function wiring diagram.

 There are connector views for connectors as from 2 plug-in contacts.

 There are overarching component wiring diagrams (SSP-BTS) in the following configurations: Ground
overview, fuse overview, connector overview, component overview, plug overview
BMW Group Page 161
AIR user guide Version 18.1.a of 295

o There are ground overviews for all ground points or ground connectors, which are not fully
shown on the function wiring diagram. They provide the information which components are
connected to a ground point or ground connector in the vehicle.

o There are fuse overviews of each fuse. The provide information on which components are
connected to the fuse and where the voltage supply for this fuse comes. In contrast to the
function circuit diagrams, the entire path is represented on the fuse overviews, from the fuse to
the components.

o There are connector overviews of all connectors that are not fully represented on a function
wiring diagram.

o Component overviews are created for control units with diagnostic capability which are not fully
shown by the function wiring diagram and the supply wiring diagram. Component overview
represent an overview of all lines of the respective component. The lines are represented up to
the next component, connector or plug connector. Only the main component is referred to with
text. All other components have a hotspot, a link with the component code label, which leads to
more detailed information.

o There are plugs views for plug connectors as from 2 plug-in contacts. The lines are represented
up to the next component, connector or plug connector. The components are not labelled with
text. They have a hotspot, a link with the component code label, which leads to more detailed
information.

 No installation location is offered mirror image for right-hand drive vehicles. Exception: The installation
position is not mirror imaged for right-hand drive vehicles, but is definitely different.

 There is no component descriptions for all electric component codes e.g. for fuses.

Special features for system wiring diagrams

System wiring diagrams are organised in the function structure starting from F01 under the "Function wiring
diagrams" structure node. Function wiring diagrams are not intended as wiring diagrams for troubleshooting!
The system wiring diagrams show the functional networking of a system. As a result, the increasing
networking in the vehicle should be borne via the bus system account. It provides an overview of the
technical connections and should make them understandable.

4.16.1.2 Wiring diagrams - Content and presentation

Wiring diagrams divide the entire electrical system of the vehicle into individual circuits. The components are
arranged on the wiring diagram so that the current course from positive terminal (above) to the negative
terminal (below) can be traced.
BMW Group Page 162
AIR user guide Version 18.1.a of 295

 The presentation of the components and lines is not to scale. So, e.g. a line of about one
metre in length is not represented differently as a line that is only a few centimetres long.

 Usually the complete vehicle equipment is shown on the wiring diagram. It is not possible to
create individual wiring diagrams for each equipment specification.

 Content varieties are shown on the wiring diagram with so-called selection brackets.

Following, the different contents of a wiring diagram represented individually.

The wire colours are indicated in the wiring diagram either as text (e.g., BL/RT) or with a coloured box and
with real wire colours (as of E8x and E9x, except for E83 and E85). High-voltage cables are always
displayed as thicker lines in the colour orange.

The wire colours provide for orientation. In the production of the wiring harness is not guaranteed
that the development target (basis for the wiring diagram) is always implemented. For this reason,
the wire colours on the wiring diagram may differ from the colours in the vehicle! Only the pin
assignment is binding for the troubleshooting!

list view of these wiring diagrams. If only one wiring diagram is available, you will go to the corresponding
wiring diagram detailed view.

In the interests of clarity the complete representation of all plug connections and cable branches within the
individual wiring diagrams is waived. Where required, fuses, ground connectors and solder connector are
shown on general wiring diagrams (via Linked Information). Some of the internal interconnections in the
components are only shown in schematic form. High-voltage components are always carry a warning
symbol.

The linked wiring diagrams can be divided into two types:

 Wiring diagrams, connected via one of the component codes. They provide more information about a
part inside of the wiring diagram.

 Wiring diagrams, connected via the Unified Parts Group. They provide information to a larger system
overview.

Find more information about the currently selected wiring diagram by clicking on the wiring diagram (Figure

4.24 Service Information Technology (SIT)

AIR provides the user with the option of using the "SIT technology" filter (1) to call up information about
Service Information Technology.

An SIT compiles information relating to servicing, e.g. how this information can be obtained and other
technological aspects.

It contains hotspots linking to other information objects, such as operating fluids, and may also contain
external links.

An SIT may also contain images, and general and legal information on carrying out the periodic exhaust-gas
test in EU countries.

4.25 Key history

AIR also provides the user with information about the key history. All key data displayed in AIR result from a
physical read-in procedure with the ignition key. This means all read-in procedures, which did not take place
via the KeyReader, e.g. Teleservices, Remote KeyRead etc. are not displayed either.

To call it up, click "Key history" (1) on the vehicle details page.

The dynamic list of contents then takes you directly to the expanded accordion entry (2).

This entry contains the read-in date (3), the odometer reading (4) and the retailer (5).

The key history is displayed differently from other BMW applications. It is deliberately designed to display
only the most important information.
BMW Group Page 218
AIR user guide Version 18.1.a of 295

It is primarily intended to inform the user about compliance with service intervals. The user can quickly see
whether a service is overdue and whether this could have any effects on warranty claims etc.

It is also possible for the Service History and the key history to differ. A key history will only be available if the
ignition key has been read out with the KeyReader. An entry can be created in the Service History
independently of that.

Figure 208 Key history

If you now move the mouse pointer (1) over the individual entries, additional information appears.

5 Interaction between ISTA and AIR

5.1 ISTA-AIR - Jump to search for PuMA measures

After reading out fault memory entries in ISTA, you have the possibility to search for PuMA measures in AIR.

There are two ways of jumping from ISTA to AIR. These are explained below.

The change from ISTA to AIR can be achieved in two ways:

1. By pressing the “Search measures“ button (Figure "Change from ISTA to AIR with fault codes", item 2):
This brings you directly to the list of PuMA measures in AIR, that are relevant for the diagnosed vehicle
(Figure "List of PuMA measures, filtered according to vehicle context and fault codes", in Section "ISTA-
AIR - step 2 - PuMA measures on faults").

2. By pressing the “AIR“ button (Figure "Change from ISTA to AIR with fault codes", item 1):
You come to the vehicle details page in AIR. From there, you can search for PuMA measures via the
menu item “Information on faults workshop/Service Consultation” (Section “Information on faults”).
BMW Group Page 239
AIR user guide Version 18.1.a of 295

Figure 231 Switching from ISTA to AIR with fault codes

AIR provides you with the following navigation options for searching for PuMA measures:

5.1.1 ISTA-AIR - step 1 - Calling up AIR with diagnosis information from ISTA (PuMA)

You have switched out of ISTA to AIR to search for information. As a result of the diagnosis information
transferred by ISTA, AIR is opened on the vehicle details page. The vehicle is already identified and the
transferred diagnostic information is contained in the “Information on faults workshop/Service Consultation”
area (Section “Information on faults”).

Clicking on the "PuMA measures" "button under the workshop table in the “Information on faults
workshop/Service Consultation“ accordion entry brings you to relevant PuMA measures for this vehicle with
this information on faults.

However the "PuMA measures" button on the top right of the vehicle details page under "Linked
content" leads to the display of all PuMA measures for the vehicle, without taking into account the
information on faults.
BMW Group Page 240
AIR user guide Version 18.1.a of 295

5.1.2 ISTA-AIR - step 2 - PuMA measures to information on faults

In the following, you come to a list of the relevant PuMA measures. Corresponding filter options are available
on the left to further restrict the results (Figure "List of PuMA measures, filtered according to vehicle context
and fault codes", item 3).

5.3 ISTA AIR diagnosis relevance

The diagnosis relevance states whether within the vehicle diagnosis a suitable diagnosis exists for a certain
VFC fault location-type of fault combination or for a type of fault-fault position combination (i.e. test module in
ISTA) and if this must be carried out.

Currently four possible cases exist for diagnosis relevance:

1. MANDATORY: The test module in ISTA has to be carried out before repair.

2. OPTIONAL: Test module can be performed in ISTA.

3. NONE: No test module is to be performed in ISTA.

4. NOINFO: No data is available that permits a statement about diagnosis relevance.

Figure 243 Flat rate unit quick search

6.3 Transfer of search results to ISPA Next

In AIR, search results are collected in the watchlist. You can make your search results available from this
watchlist to other applications, e.g. ISPA Next. Your administrator can display or suppress the button for the
"Allow ISPA write access" function. For more information about this topic, refer to the Configuration section in
the ISPI administrator manual.

To provide your search results, open the list and click on the "Provision" button (Figure ""Provision of AIR
search results for ISPA Next"", item 1).
BMW Group Page 252
AIR user guide Version 18.1.a of 295

The function is greyed out until you select at least one element using the watchlist selection field. If you
make the selected search results available using the function, the display updates itself and displays the
status (Figure “ Making the AIR research results available for ISPA Next“, – item 2). The colour of the
symbols has the following meaning:

 Green: The search result was provided successfully.

 Orange: The search result was provided successfully in the past but was changed in the meantime. The
change was not made available again yet.

 Red: The search result could not be provided.

Every use of the "Provision of AIR search results" function provides the selected elements once. If
you use the function twice on the same elements, then all elements are provided twice.

Figure 244 Provision of AIR search results for ISPA Next

BMW Group Page 253
AIR user guide Version 18.1.a of 295

If you work on a job in ISPA Next and then jump to AIR, ISPA Next sends the service case and the Job-ID of
the job currently being processed to AIR. If a service case and a Job-ID were sent to AIR the tuple is
preassigned when research results are added via the watchlist.

If you now transfer the watchlist entry to ISPA Next using the button stated at the start of this section, the
watchlist entry is not transferred directly to ISPA Next but is first stored in IPS. If a service case no longer
exists, a dialogue is displayed and you can assign the information object being transferred to another service
case. If a job no longer exists, a dialogue informs you of this and a new job is automatically created. As soon
as you open ISPA Next again, ISPA Next reads the service case back out of IPS and displays the
information search result from AIR.
BMW Group Page 254
AIR user guide Version 18.1.a of 295

7 Interaction between ISPI Process Services (IPS) and AIR

In ISPI Next, information about a service procedure (e.g. customer name, workshop appointment, Service
Advisor, etc.) is used across several ISPI Next programs (e.g. in ISPA Next and in AIR). The ISPI Process
Service (IPS) is used for the exchange of information, where the installation of the corresponding component
is also necessary.

Apart from the transfer of research information to the service case via the watchlist (Section “Watchlist” and
Section “ Transfer of research information to ISPA NEXT”) the data exchange occurs silently in the
background.

7.1 Button for displaying the Service Case

With Service Case Management, warranty relevant information is stored in the Service Case via ISPI
applications and the dealer has the option to export this information from IPS as a final Service Case report
to use in their local archive. The dealer can use this exported data as part of a warranty audit. In order to
give the dealer the option to check the contents of the Service Case for completeness and content accuracy
before export, AIR has a button for displaying the Service Case report as a PDF file including all
attachments. Clicking on the button calls up this document, see item 1.
BMW Group Page 255
AIR user guide Version 18.1.a of 295

Figure 245 Creating a Service Case report

Then a window opens which contains the PDF file, see item 1.

Simply double click on the document to open it, see item 2.

8 DMS integration

With the help of a DMS, AIR can determine prices and availabilities for flat rate unit items, packages, and
parts. In addition, AIR can attach bookmark list contents to an existing order in the DMS. Your administrator
can display and suppress the buttons for the DMS functions. You can find more information on this topic in
the "ISPI administrator manual" in the chapter "AIR Client configuration: DMS connection".

When items are selected in AIR, the software checks whether at least one flat rate unit, part, package or
repair is selected. If this is the case, the "transfer to DMS" button is activated. The system requirement for
this is that the AIR Client setting for DCOM is set to "write". If you then click the button, the software checks
(via the DCOM interface) whether the DMS can actually accept all three types, which is to say flat rates,
parts and packages. The transfer will only take place if all three are accepted. Otherwise a message appears
saying that the transfer is not possible.

The motorcycle DMS NMS does not support parts separate from packages, so DMS order extension is not
possible. Nevertheless everything else should be able to be transferred. A solution is being implemented to
allow flat rate units and packages to be transferred.

8.1 DMS query of prices and availabilities

AIR can read out and display prices and availabilities from a Dealer Management System (DMS). This
functionality is available wherever parts and/or flat rate units are included (e.g. “Packages” detailed view,
“Repairs” detailed view, “Flat rate unit items” detailed view and watchlist). You start the price and availability
query by pressing the "DMS query" button (Figure "“Packages” detailed view after DMS query", item 2).
BMW Group Page 259
AIR user guide Version 18.1.a of 295

Figure 248 “Packages” detailed view after DMS query

AIR displays a loading screen while the request is being processed. If your request is completed, prices for
flat rate units (Figure "“Packages” detailed view after DMS query ", item 2) as well as the existing number
and the price of parts are displayed (Figure "“Packages” detailed view after DMS query", item 3). If
replacements are available for particular parts in the Dealer Management System, these are exchanged on
the display after the DMS query (Figure ““Packages” detailed view after DMS query“, item 3). If according to
the Dealer Management System less parts than required for a position are in stock, this is highlighted in red
(Figure ““Packages” detailed view after DMS query“, item 3).

Only prices and availabilities are requested. No reservations of parts or orders are performed by
initiating the query.

A printout always includes all the information contained in a page. This also includes prices and availabilities
if these have been requested.
BMW Group Page 260
AIR user guide Version 18.1.a of 295

A Dealer Management System request is not automatically carried out during a printout and must
therefore be performed by a user in advance.

8.2 DMS order extension

Within the watchlist AIR gives the user the option to transmit selected (Figure “Watchlist after DMS order
extension“, item 1) items to the DMS and attach them to an order. The transfer is started by pressing the
"DMS transfer" button (Figure ""Watchlist after DMS order extension ", item 2). Once the transfer is
complete, the list displays which items were transferred successfully (Figure "Watchlist after DMS order
extension ", item 3), which have been edited since the last successful transmission (Figure "Watchlist after
DMS order extension ", item 4) and which have failed (Figure " Watchlist after DMS order extension", item 5).
For every part and every flat rate unit item it also displays whether they were successfully transmitted (Figure
“Watchlist after DMS order extension“, item 6).
BMW Group Page 261
AIR user guide Version 18.1.a of 295

Figure 249 Watchlist after DMS order extension

The order extension is only available if your Dealer Management System supports the following
functions:

 Extension of an order

 Support of parts outside a package

8.3 DMS new creation of Service Case / new order creation

BMW Group Page 262
AIR user guide Version 18.1.a of 295

In order to create a new order or Service Case in the DMS, the contents of the watchlist are sent to the DMS.
The watchlist must be opened for this (1).

10 General topics

10.1 Data protection

When using the described ISPI Next application, you will be asked to provide personal information that is
needed to set up and manage your account. The personal details requested are gathered, processed and
used for the purposes of user registration, account setup, account administration, authentication,
authorisation and ensuring proper operation of BMW AG and in individual cases of its subsidiaries, in the
context of provisions pertaining to the current data protection legislation. The data will not be passed on to
third parties.

10.2 Faults/problems

ISPI Dealer Self Support provides information on current faults and known problems (DSS) You can find the
ISPI Dealer Self Support in your ISPI Cockpit under the tab "Self-help (ISPI Dealer Self Support)" or in your
ISPI User Cockpit.

EventIDs:

In many places, an EventID will be shown in the case of an fault that occurred in AIR (Figure “EventID in the
“Navigation map“ accordion entry“).

These assist in the rapid localisation of faults. Specify these when contacting Support, so that the
corresponding faults can be quickly identified and fixed.

11 Appendix : Additional information on Commercial Service Data

In this appendix, additional information on Commercial Service Data is displayed. This information can be
used if background or basic knowledge is required for the information research.

11.1 General information about job item inclusive texts/from E39 models on

General information about job item inclusive texts/from E39 models on

The inclusive texts describe the work scope of the job items. The job item inclusive texts also serve as:

 Supplement to the flat rates and repair instructions

 Help with creation and processing of workshop orders

 User guide for use in workshop

The job item inclusive texts only describe the most important work steps. The displayed work sequence does
not claim to be the correct order. Job item texts, which are short or self-explanatory, do not contain inclusive
texts. The display of the inclusive texts is controlled by the number of the job item and the type code of the
control type. The version is displayed, if necessary. For work steps which do not contain an activity feature,
"remove and install" must be added as required.

A job item can contain several job item numbers. These so-called inclusive positions must not be invoiced
separately as the work contents are part of the work to be carried out.

11.2 General information on the defect codes

11.2.1 Defect code structure

The defect code is 10-digit, of which only the first 8 digits are given in the defect code catalogue. At the 9th
and 10th digits are both replaced by “0”. The 9th and 10th digits can also contain other information
depending on the country. The first 4 digits of the defect code are usually identical to the first 4 digits of the
part number and are also related to the flat rate unit number. Thanks to its association with an assembly, the
defect code is easy to find, e.g:

11 Engine

12 Engine electrical system

etc.
BMW Group Page 271
AIR user guide Version 18.1.a of 295

(see main group list) Please note the two additional main groups 01 (complete vehicle) and 10 (engine
general), which contain perceived defects (see below).

Example:

The part causing the fault must be specified with the defect code (defective part diagnosis), if the dealership
employee can identify this beyond doubt. If this is not possible, or if the customer complaint was remedied
due to work on several, different components, the customer perception must be diagnosed (perceived
diagnosis). The defects can mainly be found in the main groups "01", "10", and the subgroups XX "0"X. The
10-digit defect code is composed of the following:

Figure 258 Defect code structure

11.2.2 Diagnosis of cause of failure (defective part/perceived diagnosis)

Defect codes give information about which perceived symptom caused the customer to contact the
workshop. The defect codes are summarised in a catalogue.

It contains over 5,000 possible damage specifications and can be used for the whole production programme.

The defect codes are evaluated for quality monitoring purposes. Usually the component causing the damage
is determined.

For repairs in which the part causing the damage cannot be found for certain, the perception must be
diagnosed.

In this case the customer complaint is described with the defect code. Therefore it is important that the
customer complaint is recorded on the workshop order, so that the statement can be used in the diagnosis.

11.2.3 Special defect codes

Special defects are listed in the main group 00 for special retrofitting measures, e.g. Technical Campaigns. A
letter to the Service Manager and the work instruction (Service Information) are published. The Service
Information contains all invoice details and the special defect code. Only vehicles contained in the electronic
BMW Group Page 272
AIR user guide Version 18.1.a of 295

data processing list can be invoiced. In order to invoice the corresponding action, only the flat rate unit
numbers published in the associated Service Information and the special defect codes can be used (not
catalogue defect codes). Fast warranty invoicing is imperative for retrofitting measures. This determines the
completion rate of the Technical Campaign.

11.2.4 Specific information on the defect codes

Specific information on the defect codes

Defect codes give information about which complaint caused the customer to contact the workshop. The
defect codes are summarised in a catalogue (catalogue defect code). It contains over 5,000 possible
damage specifications and can be used for the whole vehicle production programme. As well as the
catalogue defect codes, there are also two other types of defect codes (temporary defect codes and special
defect codes. These two defect types are usually communicated via Service Information/PuMA measure and
are not contained in the defect catalogue. For work resulting from Service Information, only use this special
defect code listed in the Service Information. These can also be identified using the KSD2 "Search" function.
The defect codes are evaluated for quality monitoring purposes. Therefore they must be conscientiously
diagnosed by the Retailer. Please also use the comment box in the warranty claim to communicate other
relevant details about the customer complaint. Please also observe the basic specifications in accordance
with the warranty manual. Peculiarity:

Please observe the following specifications:

1. If fault elimination can only be performed by programming the DME control unit or the DDE control unit,
then the appropriate symptom diagnoses are in Unified Parts Group. 10 must be used.

2. For complaints about tyres (defects under 36 12 or 36 11 01 57 and 36 11 02 57) the whole manufacturer-
specific DOT number on the outer tyre sidewall must be noted in the comment box of the warranty claim. In
case of non-compliance the request will be rejected. The complete DOT number for original tyres is currently
structured as follows:

DOT xx yy abcd jj ww DOT= Department of Transportation xx= manufacturer identification

yy= tyre size code

abcd= version code (d is optional and is not always used!)

jjww= year of manufacture and – calendar week (from 31/12/1989 to 31/12/1999 the year was indicated by
one digit followed by a triangle symbol)

Thus in order to use the symptom diagnoses, it is important to record the customer complaint on the
workshop order. The DOT number must also be recorded for "Tyre complaints".

Warranty costs for invoicing flash times for E6(X) and successors:

The following measures apply since 01.07.2004: After working through the test modules, which point to
programming, a vehicle-specific test code is listed. This test code must be entered in the comment box of the
BMW Group Page 273
AIR user guide Version 18.1.a of 295

warranty costs request. Missing test codes in warranty costs requests with programming result in rejection.
Vehicle wiring harness:

For complaints about the vehicle wiring harness or the auxiliary cable, a verbal description must be given in
the comment box of the warranty claim. Please write the identification of the cable (colour, cross-section,
position in vehicle or the component code X... of the plug connection or the connector) in the comment box.
Indicator lights in the KOMBI:

Complaints about indicator lights in the KOMBI must be treated in the same way. Name the faulty lights in
the comment box. Defect code structure

The defect code is 10-digit, whereby only the first 8 digits are given in the defect catalogue. At the 9th and
10th digits are both replaced by “0”. The 9th and 10th digits can also contain other information depending on
the country. The first 4 digits of the defect code are usually identical to the first 4 digits of the part number
and are generally also related to the flat rate unit number. The component causing the fault (defective part
diagnosis) must be given with the defect code, if the dealership employee can identify this beyond doubt. If
this is not possible, or if the customer complaint was stopped due to work on several different components,
the customer perception must be diagnosed (perceived diagnosis). These defects can mainly be found in the
main groups "01", "10", and various subgroups XX "00"X. Example:

Oxygen sensor:

The defects in the front oxygen sensor or monitoring oxygen sensor must only be used if the sensors were
clearly identified as the component causing the fault. For example the fault "Oxygen sensor control limit
cylinder 1-3" could have the following causes:

oxygen sensor faulty (e.g. conductor path separation)

) too much excess air (intake or exhaust)

overenrichment of mixture (e.g. fuel injector leaking)

It is imperative that the fault cause is always analysed and then the affected component determined. Please
also use the comment box in the warranty claim to communicate other relevant details about the complaint.
The specifications in the warranty manual must also be followed at all times.

11.2.5 Temporary defect codes

With "temporary defect codes", special measures are invoiced, that are communicated via Service
Information /PuMA measure and for which checks or substitute measures are carried out in a customer
complaint case. Only use the temporary defect codes or flat rate unit numbers which are communicated in
the relevant Service Information for this work. The temporary defect codes have a "9" as the 5th digit.
Temporary defect codes are not contained in the defect code catalogue but are created in your electronic
data processing system and can be identified using the KSD2 function "Number search" (see also specific
information, flat rate/defect links).
BMW Group Page 274
AIR user guide Version 18.1.a of 295

11.2.6 "Service Inclusive package" defect codes

"Service Inclusive package" defect codes

The defect codes in the "Service Inclusive package" are invoiced via the established warranty systems
Service and maintenance work. This includes explicit maintenance work and services including oil, wages
and any required Original BMW replacement parts, as well as the wear repairs caused by correct operation
of the vehicle. Only use the published defect and flat rate unit numbers for this work. The defect codes for
the "Service Inclusive package" always begin with 87........

11.3 General information about the flat rates

The flat rates are a guideline for:

 overall repair processing and

 warranty and goodwill invoicing

Repair processing involves the whole process from order acceptance to invoicing. The advantages of the
service data are:

 exact order definition

 fast, transparent invoice creation

 exact precalculation (cost estimates)

 capacity-oriented scheduling

 productivity calculation for facility planning

 flat rate specification (performance wage calculation)

As well as net working time, the flat rates (FRUs) contain all the objective and personal time allowances
required to fulfil a repair order.

The flat rate units are determined in accordance with REFA guidelines. For the flat rate units:

 1 FRU = 5 minutes

The flat rate unit specifications are defined on vehicles with standard equipment. Separate allowance must
be made for optional equipment.
BMW Group Page 275
AIR user guide Version 18.1.a of 295

11.4 Job items without flat rate specifications (working time)

Job items are identified as working time if the work scope for performing the work varies, e.g. in case of
troubleshooting or function check.

E.g. 24 00 010 Check AT for function

Work, which is not described by fixed job items, can be invoiced per Unified Parts Group as "working time
without specification" if necessary (prerequisites for this are in the warranty manual).

E.g. 00 99 000 Working time without specification/maintenance, 11 99 000 working time without
specification/engine etc.

If the scope of repair work consists exclusively of non-catalogued work scopes (working time), this working
time scope has the characteristics of main work. The basis for using it in the warranty claim is the clocked-in
time and adherence to the guidelines in the warranty manual.

If however there is an overall scope which consists of work steps without time specification as well as
catalogued job items, the catalogued scope is used as main work, the working time position as associated
work.

11.5 Structure of the flat rate unit manual

The flat rate unit manual is organised according to main groups. The breakdown corresponds to the
subdivision of Unified Parts Groups as in the EPC (Electronic Parts Catalogue) and in ISTA (Integrated
Service Technical Application).

The designations of the job item texts are predominantely aligned with the designations of BMW Group
Parts.

The flat rate numbers are 7-digit and consist of a 2-digit main group, a 2-digit subgroup and the 3-digit serial
number.

Example:
BMW Group Page 276
AIR user guide Version 18.1.a of 295

Figure 259 Flat rate catalogue

Several versions with distinct flat rate specifications are specified, if structural or technical changes were
made.

Job items for the corresponding gearbox versions are indicated by M (manual gearbox / manual) or A
(automatic transmission).

11.6 Main work

Main work can be identified as follows:

 The serial number is between 000 and 499.

Main work consists of completed work processes that:

 begin with the acceptance of the order by the mechanic and end with the vehicle return at final
inspection or the workshop order at the control panel.

 Main work includes all work processes and steps required to exchange or repair a part or assembly.

Therefore the specification contains the following details:

all disassembly and installation work required to repair a part or assembly and all adjustment work, which
could arise in the work scope.
BMW Group Page 277
AIR user guide Version 18.1.a of 295

Exception for drawing off and topping up fuel. For job items in which drawing off and topping up fuel is
required, the flat rate portion is included or indicated as associated work with the corresponding job item text
"without drawing off and topping up fuel".

In this case the position must be invoiced separately with the actual number of litres drawn off/topped up.

Exception for straightening bench

For the job items in main group 41, in which a straightening bench is required, the flat rate portion is either
included or indicated as associated work with the corresponding job item text "flat rate specification without
straightening bench". In this case the straightening bench must be invoiced separately.

Exception for wheel alignment

For the job items in the main groups 31, 32, 33 and 41, in which a wheel alignment is required, the flat rate
portion is not included. Flat rate specifications are either shown as associated work according to the
corresponding job item or the note: "Job item specification without wheel alignment" is displayed. In both
cases the wheel alignment must be invoiced separately.

Exception for programming/encoding control units

For job items in which one or more control units must be programmed/encoded, the flat rate portion is
included or displayed as associated work with the corresponding job item text "flat rate specification without
programming/encoding, see 61 00 … ". In this case the programming/encoding of control units must be
invoiced separately.

11.7 Notes for workshops

BMW AG reserves the right to correct flat rates if designs, work scopes, or work methods must be changed
for structural or technical reasons. If you have any questions about flat rates: Please contact BMW AG,
repair department.

11.7.1 Explanation of flat rate specifications for body repair (main group 41)

Explanation of flat rate specifications for body repair (main group 41)

The flat rate specifications of main group 41 include:

BMW Group Page 278
AIR user guide Version 18.1.a of 295

 Ripping out the body components mentioned in the job item, cutting, adjusting and welding in or
adhering/riveting new parts.

 Removing and installing assemblies and body equipment parts. These flat rate specifications are
specified in the individual job items with the letter "R" and must never be added to the overall
specifications.

 Stripping down and refitting straightening bench with raising and lowering the vehicle. As of the Fx
series, this scope is shown separately.

 Applying sealing and damping compound (including droning insulation inside).

Preparing vehicle for partial painting. The flat rate specifications of main group 41 do not include:

 Removing retaining and mounting brackets from damaged body components and welding onto new
parts.

 Straightening work and removing dents from adjacent body components as well as reshaping.

 Repair of damaged assemblies or body equipment parts.

 Re-treating cavity preservation (see flat rate specification main group 97).

 Wheel alignment with adjustment work.

11.7.2 Explanation of flat rate specifications for paintwork (main group 99)

Work scope

In the flat rate specifications for repair painting, all work which guarantees professional painting work is
considered. Every job item (body component) is self-contained. It includes all the following listed work in the
work scope.

The flat rate specifications of main group 99 include:

· Paint structure on outer areas (with all additional works and allowing for paint stages)

· Painting the inner surfaces if necessary

· All Preliminary Work, e.g. preparing grinding tools or spraying tools, masking work, mixing painting
materials

· Blending and repolishing (within a job item or a body component)

· Spraying droning insulation (outer) if necessary

BMW Group Page 279
AIR user guide Version 18.1.a of 295

· Sanding and polishing dust inclusions

· Cleaning dry overspray, grinding dust, adhesive residue etc. from vehicle.

Note:

Spraying sample sheet metal

For all series launches since E 87 ( exception E 86) spraying the sample sheet metal is included in the flat
rate specifications and must no longer be invoiced separately. For vehicles before E 87 the sample sheet
metal is not included in the flat rate specifications. The exact work scope for each paint stage is documented
in the inclusive text.

11.7.2.1 Creation of workshop orders for repair painting

Example:

11.7.2.2 Note about creation of workshop orders

Note about creation of workshop orders

In the creation of workshop orders, ensure that main work only appears once for each order. Every other
position must be viewed as associated work. For orders with several body components to be painted, the job
item with the highest paint stage must be listed as main work. For several job items with the highest paint
stage, the job item with the highest flat rate must be listed as main work.

Abbreviations

 UN = solid paint

 ME = metallic paint

 dm2 = painted surface

11.7.2.3 Body equipment items

Stripping and rebuilding operations on body equipment items are not included in the work scope of repair
painting.

Depending on the painting scope, the flat rate specifications must be taken from the itemised list or the
summary.

If accident repair work already preceded the painting work, only the job items for the stripping and rebuilding
operations for the body equipment items, which were not already disassembled in the body repair work
(main group 41) can be invoiced.

11.7.2.4 Paint stages

1 without complete paint structure: surface painting

2 complete paint structure: screwing / adhering, riveting new part

3 complete paint structure: Straightened parts and welded-in new parts including complete paint structure

a) complete paint structure: Building up repair painting from sanding the body components to spraying the
finish paint or clear paint.

b) without complete paint structure: Surface painting or sanding old finish paint, spraying finish paint or clear
paint.
BMW Group Page 282

11.8 Performance rate of workshop

The flat rates for the individual job items are ratios of the individual working times to each other. Therefore in
every repair outlet it should be determined in advance how many flat rates are performed per working hour
on average.

Calculating the performance rate:

1. Determining the average time: In every repair outlet approx. 10 working times for performing approx. 20
of the most common job items should be noted. Using the resulting average time, the flat rates
performed per hour can be calculated for each of the 20 job items.

2. Determining the performance rate: The average calculated from these 20 job items gives the
performance rate of the workshop in flat rates/hour.

3. Determining the working times: The calculated performance rate gives the conversion factor. Using the
conversion factor, all the flat rates specified in the flat rate unit manual can be converted to working
times.

11.8.1 Shortened example for calculating the performance rate

BMW Group Page 283
AIR user guide Version 18.1.a of 295

Figure 261 Calculating the performance rate

11.9 Associated work

Associated work can be identified as follows:

 The serial number is between 500 and 999.

 Associated work supplements the main work.

BMW Group Page 284
AIR user guide Version 18.1.a of 295

There are three variations :

1. Associated work, with flat rate unit numbers identified by "+", must be carried out with some other main
work.
The job items identified by "+" are completed work processes (like main work), but don't include the time
required to move the vehicle from the car park to the workshop and back.

Example:

Figure 262 Associated work

11.10 Invoicing job items with "+" identification

For invoicing or warranty calculation, main work can only be used once per order.

Every other job item in the same order must be supplemented or invoiced with a job item identified by "+",
where available.

This also applies to special job item numbers for warranty settlements with the notes:
