Dates First week of July, 2020 Topic Lesson 1 17.1 - Organic chemistry Lesson 2 17.2 - Hydrocarbons (Part 1) Resources Textbook: Essential Chemistry for Cambridge IGCSE (Roger Norris) Key words Homologous series, Functional group, alkanes Learning Lesson 1 Objectives - Describe the concept of homologous series as a ‘family’ of similar compounds with similar properties due to the presence of the same functional group - Describe the general characteristics of a homologous series - Recall that the compounds in a homologous series have the same general formula - Distinguish between molecular and structural formula - Name and draw the structures of basic organic compounds - methane/ethane/ethanol/ethanoic acid - Establish rules of number of bonds formed for carbon, hydrogen and oxygen Lesson 2 - Define the term hydrocarbon - Name and draw the structures of alkanes according to IUPAC guidelines Learning activities Lesson 1 and tasks - Learners could draw (with the help of the teacher) some basic organic compounds to determine the structural formula of successive members (Methane - Pentane) and emphasise the difference of CH 2 between successive members of the homologous series. - Work out successive members using general formula. - Teacher will stress that the functional group determines chemical reactions, but Mr and length of molecule affects physical properties, e.g. state, boiling point. - Discuss the effect of increased molecular mass down the series on boiling point. Lesson 2 - Distinguish hydrocarbons from other organic compounds (exclusively C and H) - Students to learn naming of straight chain alkanes. - Students to learn the name of alkyl prefixes. Lesson plan 1 1. Teacher describes today’s learning objectives 2. Teacher carries out the Learning objectives and tasks 3. Children to ask about areas they are still struggling with or have doubts about. 4. Teacher answers above queries. 5. Teacher selects some past paper questions relevant to the topic which they solve in class. DPS-STS School Online weekly learning plan: Grade 10 (Chemistry)
