Teacher Rafi Tasnim Rahman Subject Chemistry Grade 10

Dates Fourth week of July, 2020
Topic Lesson 1
18.1 - Alkanes
Lesson 2
18.2 - Cracking alkanes

Resources Textbook: Essential Chemistry for Cambridge IGCSE (Roger Norris)

Key words Alkanes, Substitution, cracking
Learning Lesson 1
Objectives - Properties of alkanes (exemplified by methane) as being generally
unreactive, except in terms of burning.
- The bonding in alkanes
- Substitution reactions of alkanes with chlorine
Lesson 2
- Necessity of cracking after fractional distillation
- Cracking of HCs in the lab
- Examples of cracking: Using naphtha and ethane
Learning activities Lesson 1
and tasks - Teacher to outline properties of alkanes based on the bonding (Lack
of reactivity is partly due to the presence of strong singles bongs C–C
and C–H bonds only)
- Describe reactions of alkanes (complete vs incomplete combustion
and photochemical substitution reaction with halogens)
Lesson 2
- Teacher to explain that cracking is essentially a type of thermal
decomposition technique
- Teacher to explain the necessity for cracking to obtain desirable
products
