PRINCIPLES FOR REOPENING
GUIDED BY OUR MISSION

The pandemic caused by the novel coronavirus presents a severe public health crisis and poses an extraordinary challenge for
educators worldwide. The 2019-2020 school year was unlike any other in the history of Christ Academy. Now we have
shifted our attention to re-entry strategies for the fall to understand that the threat posed by this virus will be with us indefinitely.

Our current plan is to open the 2020–2021 school year on campus on our regularly scheduled start date, August 13th. Our
deeply relational model of education works best in person, and we believe it is in the students' best interest to bring them back
together. We are putting in place an abundance of safety precautions to return and remain on campus.

Although we are taking every possible step to offer on-campus education, we know there will be some students who will be
learning remotely for a variety of reasons. We are acquiring technology to ensure that students working from home can follow
classroom instruction in real-time. Planning for a hybrid model will permit us to move readily back into distance learning should
circumstances require.

Above all, we seek to maintain our programs' educational excellence while ensuring that all students can participate
meaningfully, whether learning on campus or remotely. No matter the conditions, we will deliver our mission to produce
academically well-prepared students who model the character of Jesus Christ—a task that is more critical than ever during times
of global challenge.

This Re-entry Plan provides an overview so that all members of our community know what to expect. The plans shared in this
document are in line with the most current public health assessment. We ask that you continue to be flexible as we work
diligently to stay abreast of new information and modify this living document accordingly.

COMMUNITY PLEDGE

With the guidance of local public health officials, we are putting new community standards and behaviors in place to promote
a safe learning environment for our students, faculty, and staff. We are developing protocols around personal protective
equipment, introducing screening measures to detect illness in the community, and enhancing processes and procedures
around sanitizing and disinfecting.

Undoubtedly this will be more of a parent-student-school partnership than ever before and an opportunity to work together to
protect each other's health. We trust that all our families, faculty, and staff will commit to our community standards to help
mitigate the spread of COVID-19 and keep our campus open.

It is imperative for parents to actively partner with us to ensure remote or on-campus learning is successful for your student.

It will take all of us working together to make this successful.

1
HEALTH, SAFETY, AND WELLNESS
PRACTICES TO PREVENT COVID-19 FROM ENTERING THE SCHOOL

1. All teachers and staff will self-screen each day before coming to campus. This self-screen includes a review for
COVID-19 symptoms (as defined at the end of the document) and a temperature check.

2. Any teacher or staff member with COVID-19 symptoms, lab-confirmed COVID-19, pending COVID-19 test result, or
close contact (as defined at the end of the document) with a person with lab-confirmed COVID-19 will report such
circumstances to the school. Such individuals will remain off campus until the criteria for re-entry are met, as noted
below.

3. Parents or guardians must not allow their student to attend school with COVID-19 symptoms, lab-confirmed COVID-
19, pending COVID-19 test result, or close contact with a person with lab-confirmed COVID-19. Parents or
guardians must report any such circumstances to the school. Such individuals will remain off campus until the criteria
for re-entry are met, as noted below.

4. A temperature check will be performed on all students upon entry to school. Additionally, students may be evaluated
for symptoms at the teachers' or staff members' discretion. Any student with or reporting COVID-19 symptoms or with
a temperature above 100.0 will be diverted and sent home with the parent or guardian.

5. All students, regardless of grade level, teachers and staff, will wear a mask or face shield upon disembarking their
vehicle and entering the school. Additional details regarding the use of masks and face shields inside the school are
outlined in the next section.

6. Visitors, including parents, will not be allowed into the school building. A parent may walk outside with their student at
drop-off and pick-up, but only if wearing a mask or face shield. Any visitor who must enter the building for exceptional
circumstances will be screened for symptoms, checked for temperature, and always required to wear a mask or face
shield.

7. All off-campus school activities (excluding away competitions) are suspended in order to limit unnecessary student and
staff movement and prevent unnecessary congregating in vehicles.

RE-ENTRY POLICY FOR STUDENTS, STAFF, AND TEACHERS

Those with lab-confirmed COVID-19 may return to school when all 3 of the following conditions are met:

1. At least 24 hours have passed since fever and symptoms resolved

2. At least 10 days have passed since symptoms first appeared

3. At least 10 days have passed since “original” positive test (measured from the day the sample was collected)
2
Those with COVID-19 symptoms or fever, but are not lab-confirmed positive, may return to school when the following
conditions are met:

1. At least 24 hours have passed since fever and symptoms resolved (resolution of fever without the use of fever-reducing
medications) AND at least 10 days have passed since symptoms first appeared
OR
2. 1 test result are obtained on samples collected at least 72 hours apart (tests should be for active COVID-19 infection.
Serology/Antibody testing is unacceptable)

Those with close contact to a person with lab-confirmed COVID-19 may return to school when the following conditions are
met:
1. At least 14 days have passed, without the development of symptoms, since last close contact with the lab-confirmed
COVID-19 individual
OR
2. Two negative test results are obtained on samples collected at least 72 hours apart (tests should be for active COVID-
19 infection. Serology/Antibody testing is unacceptable)

PRACTICES TO MITIGATE THE LIKELIHOOD OF COVID -19 SPREAD INSIDE THE SCHOOL

1. The school will have hand sanitizing stations at each entrance and provide hand sanitizer and/or hand washing
stations with soap and water in every classroom.

2. Students, teachers, and staff members will sanitize and/or wash hands frequently.
a. Students will engage in supervised hand washing for at least 20 seconds at least two times each day, in
addition to washing hands after using the restroom and before eating.
b. Students will be taught good hand washing techniques.
c. Students, teachers, and staff members will cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue or other face covering
technique. Used tissues will be thrown in the trash and hands will be sanitized or washed immediately with
soap and water for at least 20 seconds.

3. The school will institute more frequent cleaning practices, including additional cleaning by the janitorial staff. Students
will have the opportunity to clean their own spaces before and after they are used, in ways that are safe and
developmentally appropriate.
a. There will be additional cleaning and disinfecting of surfaces that are commonly touched throughout the day.
This includes door handles, common tables/desks, and shared supplies and devices.
b. Classrooms to be used by separate class groups will be cleaned between uses.
c. Cleaning products will be safely stored, and potentially harmful products will not be used near students.

4. All staff members and teachers will wear masks or face shields throughout the school day when in the school building
(except when eating lunch).

3
5. All students in 4th grade and above will wear masks or face shields throughout the school day when in the school
building (except when eating lunch).

6. All students in 3rd grade and below will wear masks or face shields when entering the building or in other indoor
common areas (hallways, etc.). These students can remove their face coverings when in their classrooms.

7. In order to limit opportunities for exposure to both staff and students, no lunches will be provided by the school. All
students must bring their lunch from home. Microwaves will be available.

8. Students will predominantly remain in one classroom, with only limited movement to other classrooms for certain
activities. Chapel will be held separately in each student classroom, except for a once-a-month group chapel by
department following strict social distancing protocols. All other assemblies and large group gatherings will be
suspended.

9. Whenever possible, the school will work to improve airflow by allowing outside air to circulate through the building.

10. On the first day a student attends school on campus, the school will provide instruction to the student on appropriate
hygiene practices and other mitigation practices adopted by the school.

PRACTICES TO RESPOND TO A LAB-CONFIRMED CASE IN THE SCHOOL

1. In the event a student, staff member or teacher has lab-confirmed COVID-19, the school will notify the appropriate
health agencies as required by federal, state, and local laws and regulations. These notifications will abide by
confidentiality requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the Family Educational Rights and Privacy
Act (FERPA).

2. Any area of the school used by the individual with lab-confirmed COVID-19 will be closed off until the non-porous
surfaces in those areas can be disinfected, unless more than 7 days have already passed since that person was on
campus.

3. Any student, staff member or teacher who is determined to have had close contact with the lab-confirmed COVID-19
individual must leave school and may return according to the re-entry policy outlined above.

4. In accordance with school notification requirements for other communicable diseases, and consistent with legal
confidentiality requirements, the school will notify all teachers, staff members, and the families of all students if any
individual who participated in on-campus activities has lab-confirmed COVID-19.

4
INFORMATION REGARDING FACE COVERINGS

1. For the purposes of this document, “masks” include non-medical grade disposable face masks and cloth face
coverings (over the nose and mouth). “Face shields” are full-face coverage to protect eyes, nose, and mouth.

2. Christ Academy will comply with the governor’s executive order regarding the wearing of masks.

3. It may be impractical for students to wear masks or face shields while participating in some athletic or other
extracurricular activities. In such circumstances, the school will require students, teachers, staff members and any
visitors to wear masks or face shields when entering and exiting the facility or when not actively engaged in those
activities. Students who are in physical education or outdoors may remove face coverings.

USE OF NON-CLASSROOM SPACES

1. In the appropriate circumstances (such as physical education classes), preference will be given for students to gather
outside because of the likely reduced risk of virus spread outdoors.

2. The school will continue to evaluate its extracurricular activity offerings but will continue to limit offerings only to those
who can be provided without undue risk.

3. Middle bathroom sinks will not be in use and will serve as dividers.

4. As previously stated, the school will no longer provide lunches. EC3 through Grade Five students will eat lunch at their
desks. Grade Six through Twelve students will eat lunch in their assigned areas following strict social distancing
protocols.

TRANSPORTATION

1. In the event buses are used, students and staff will use hand sanitizer upon boarding the bus. When feasible, bus
windows will be opened to improve ventilation with outside air. After each bus trip, buses will be thoroughly cleaned
with an emphasis on high-touch surfaces such as seats, steering wheels, knobs, and door pulls. Windows will also be
opened during cleaning when feasible.

2. At this point, we are only providing transportation for athletes.

3. There will be no off-campus trips or excursions during the fall semester. That includes field trips, industry visits, global
exchanges, service-learning trips, retreats, and off-campus professional development.

5
STAFFING

1. Employees of Christ Academy, like employees of any organization, must continue to meet the work expectations set by
their employers, subject to any applicable employment contract terms.

2. Teachers and staff will be trained specifically on the protocols outlined in this document and the practices adopted by
the school.

3. The school will reduce in-person staff meetings or other opportunities for adults to congregate in close settings. When
those meetings are necessary and cannot be done via electronic means, everyone must follow the face covering
protocols in this guidance, remain at least 6 feet apart where feasible and consider whether increased airflow from the
outdoors is possible in those settings.

DEFINITION OF CLOSE CONTACT

For the purposes of this document “Close Contact” is defined as:

1. Being directly exposed to infectious secretions of a person who is confirmed COVID-19 positive (e.g., being coughed
on while not wearing a mask or face shield)
OR
2. Being within 6 feet of a person who is confirmed COVID-19 positive for a cumulative duration of 15 minutes while not
wearing a mask or face shield.

COHORTS

For effective social distancing, we recognize the need to minimize interactions between cohort groups. Our goal is to keep
students within consistent groupings throughout the day while ensuring they have access to the same breadth of course
offerings.

In the early childhood and lower school, the cohort group consists of a child's classroom and teachers. Total numbers in each
cohort will vary based on grade admission caps. In the upper school, the need for flexible scheduling and coordinated classes
precludes small cohort groups' formation, so the division represents a cohort group.

6
COVID-19 SYMPTOMS

An individual who has recently developed any of the following is considered to have COVID-19 symptoms:

1. Feeling feverish or having a measured temperature greater than or equal to 100.0 degrees Fahrenheit

2. Loss of taste or smell

3. Cough

4. Difficulty breathing

5. Shortness of breath

6. Headache

7. Chills

8. Sore throat

9. Shaking or exaggerated shivering

10. Significant muscle pain or ache

11. Diarrhea

LEARNING
We are committed to delivering our mission through an educational experience rooted in blended learning.

While we aspire to open the campus, we are preparing for various scenarios, knowing that we could encounter another wave
of infections and a need to return to remote learning.

We are pleased to present two learning scenarios described below. We believe each approach will enable us to deliver the
type of program that has defined the Christ Academy experience.

ON-CAMPUS

With our large campus, we are fortunate to bring our full student body onto campus for in-person instruction five days a week
while still maintaining appropriate physical distancing.

However, campus life is going to look and feel different for us during the pandemic. Christ Academy is implementing changes
to support physical distancing and the best practices necessary for on-campus learning.

To promote safety, specific programs will not run as they have in the past, and our community gathering times, such as Chapel,
will switch to a monthly format separated by department.

BEFORE/AFTERCARE

1. We will offer before and aftercare for students.

2. Students may enter the building as early as 7:30 a.m. and go directly to the cafeteria to wait until 8:00 a.m.

3. All students will wear a face-covering in communal spaces.

4. Club Warrior will follow all guidance provided in our plan.

SUPPLEMENTAL AND EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

1. All music and visual performing arts academy offerings are suspended for the 2020-2021 school year.

2. Studio arts will continue while following all guidance in our plan.

3. All sports academies for Early Childhood Three through Grade Five will be offered on campus. All Grade Six through
Grade Twelve school sports academies will continue while following all guidance in our plan.

4. At this point, we are only providing transportation for athletes.

8
5. There will be no off-campus trips or excursions during the fall semester. Spring semester is to be determined. That
includes field trips, industry visits, global exchanges, service-learning trips, retreats, and off-campus professional
development.

6. Guest speakers will take place in a virtual forum or outdoors.

EARLY CHILDHOOD (EC 3–EC 4)

1. Each classroom constitutes a cohort group, and the cohort groups will remain isolated when feasible under the most
current guidelines.

2. Each group will be assigned a time to use the playground, which will be cleaned between each use.

3. Children will continue to eat in their classrooms. Student lunch may be brought to the office for staff to distribute to the
student.

4. Students will travel to supplementals, recess, and physical education, and each class will be staggard to limit time in
communal areas such as hallways.

5. All students will wear face-covering in communal spaces except for outdoor spaces and physical education.

6. Early childhood will adopt a 1:1 technology model, which means each student will receive an individual tablet.

ELEMENTARY (KINDERGARTEN-GRADE 5)

1. Students will be grouped into cohorts by grade.

2. Students will travel to supplementals, recess, and physical education, but each class will be assigned a time to limit
time in communal areas such as hallways.

3. Children eat in their classrooms. Student lunch may be brought to the office for staff to distribute to the student.

4. Recess times will be scheduled and organized to maintain the integrity of the established cohorts.

5. Elementary will adopt a 1:1 technology model, which means each student will receive an individual tablet or laptop
dependent on grade.

6. Kindergarten through Grade 3 students will wear face-covering in communal spaces except for outdoor spaces and
physical education.

7. Grade Four and Five students will wear a face-covering in all areas except for outdoor spaces and physical
education.

9
8. Grade Four and Five students will have face-covering breaks throughout the day.

SECONDARY (GRADE SIX-GRADE TWELVE)

1. Electives are part of the rotation, whether they happen in person or remotely. The remote choices will be limited.

2. Junior High and Senior High students are a cohort by division due to the frequent mixing of ability levels.

3. The division will continue its 1:1 technology model, meaning each student will have his/her own device that is not
shared. We will provide a laptop for each student.

4. Students will continue to eat in their designated areas while observing social distancing guidelines. Student lunch may
be brought to the office for staff to distribute to the student.

REMOTE LEARNING

We understand that some students will not be able to attend classes in person due to familial health risk, illness, or quarantine.
The remote coursework schedule is Tuesday - Monday. This allows teachers to upload videos and content at the end of the
day, for the following day's work.

If a parent chooses the remote learning option, it is imperative to realize that active partnering with us and their student is
essential for success. This choice, outside of personal sickness, or mandated quarantine requires a “virtual” meeting with the
principal.

1. Each teacher will be equipped with an iPad to record live lessons. Students who cannot physically attend school will
be provided a device and curriculum materials to follow along as they observe the lesson.

2. These students will be offered a combination of live lesson time, small group sessions, individual meetings, and
recorded instruction.

3. Coursework will include supplementals, physical education, and for upper school electives that are appropriate for
remote learning.

4. "Live" interaction, when possible and appropriate, may include times where the teacher is working with individuals or
small groups, times where teachers are walking around the room checking work and answering questions during class,
during an experiment, etc. This will be scheduled by the teacher.

5. Students in all grades will use the Learning Management System, Schoology, to track assignments, locate resources,
and turn in work.

10
6. Additional student/parent questions will be answered through email or by “virtual” appointment during the school day
hours. Teachers will not be available to assist remote students and parents after school hours.

LEARNING SUPPORT SERVICES

We will continue to support students through on-campus or distance learning, and teachers will continue to implement each
student's formal education plan regardless of setting.

Digital learning assistants will be available to provide appropriate support to aid teachers in providing remote learning.

ENHANCED PROTECTIONS
CAMPUS ACCESS AND VISITOR POLICIES

We cannot increase the risk of spreading COVID-19 from a guest to our campus community. Therefore, we have determined
that the campus will be closed to visitors and guests, including current parents and volunteers. Essential vendors will be
permitted on campus after proper screening.

FOOD SERVICES

Managing school lunch is incredibly challenging for schools during this pandemic.

1. Food service will not be available until further notice.

2. Students will eat together with their cohort groups in the assigned area or outside.

3. Students should pack their own lunch, snacks, and drinks, including enough water to last through the day. Water
fountains and filling stations are only open to refill empty containers.

4. Student lunch may be brought to the office for staff to distribute to the student.

11
PREPARING FOR INTERRUPTIONS
NEED FOR FLEXIBILITY

Despite our best efforts and thoughtful planning, there remain circumstances beyond our control. Based on public health
predictions, we anticipate possible outbreaks of COVID-19, which could potentially disrupt on-campus programming next
year.

In the event we decide to close our campus based on the prevalence of illness in our school community, instruction will continue
remotely. Please note that we do not need to follow WFISD, but our decisions will consider the local public health environment.

OUR COMMITMENT

During any period of temporary remote learning, we remain committed to delivering our mission, providing students with high
quality, student-centered learning experiences, finding ways to keep our community connected and engaged, and
communicating regular updates

WE CAN’T WAIT TO SEE YOU

When the time comes to welcome our students back, we will be ready and eager.

Although the school will look somewhat different in August, we genuinely believe that we have designed an experience that
preserves all the hallmarks of Christ Academy's education while at the same time promoting health and safety.

Thank you for your partnership and your trust as we move ahead together. If you have questions about this plan, please send
them to the Principal by emailing tcallaway@christacademywf.org.
