AMTG-2 Accurate Magnetic Thickness Gauge
Using Manual

1. Introduction
AMTG-2 Accurate Magnetic Thickness Gauge adopts the magnetic probe sensing technology. It’s used for

performing the non-destructive thickness measuring of non-magnetic materials, such as plastic, glass,

aluminum, titanium, copper etc.

Basing on the principle of Hall Effect, with different sizes of steel balls and analyzing the different signal

strength feedback from the balls, the accurate measurement can be achieved.

6) After entered the measuring screen, it is ready to perform the measurement. To carry out a measurement,

simply place the probe tip on one side of the material, then place the steel ball (the one that calibrated in

the previous operation) on the other side near the probe tip. The ball will be attracted to the probe tip by

magnetic field. Once the ball is within range, the system will begin to display thickness values providing

the tip and ball are both in contact with the material. The value display on screen is the actual value. Or to

recheck the accuracy of the instrument, please use the steel ball to measure the equipped standard block

gauge to compare the value.

*Measuring the sample

*Measuring the 3.000 mm standard block gauge to recheck the instrument

Notes: During the measuring, the steel ball and magnetic probe will bring some magnetism to the probe

tip, which will affect the measures. Therefore, please do not perform the measure in a rapid and

continuous way. Please wait for 5 seconds before measuring a new sample or changing a new standard

block gauge. Or press the “QCAL” button located on the side of the probe to demagnetize.

9. Single-Point calibration
The Single-Point calibration, it is to let the instrument to detect the zero point when the probe is in no-load

status and the steel ball type that is being used (whether it is 4.76 mm, 3.18 mm or 1.59 mm steel ball). So the

Single-Point calibration is not a linear one, and it does not lead to any linear correction.

This is a simple and convenient way of operation. Granted that a wrong calibration has been done, it just needs

to simply do it again to correct it with a few steps in couple seconds. So generally, it is suggested that users to

operate in this mode.

4) Use the steel ball which has been calibrated just now for the measures. Measuring range refers to the

below table:

Recommended measuring range after Accuracy of single-point

Steel ball dia.

0.063" (1.59 mm) 0.00 – 2.00 mm 5% ±0.003 mm

10. Multi-Point calibration

Multi-Point calibration is an advanced calibration mode that base on the Single-Point calibration, to build up a

detail linear section, divided the measure range up to 13 segments and calibrates them respectively, which to

make the whole data section highly accurate.

Standard block gauge thickness (units: mm)

Ball Spec.
0.000 0.230 0.500 1.000 2.000 3.000 4.000 5.000

1.59 mm A1 B1 C1 D1 E1

3.18 mm A2 B2 C2 D2 E2 F2 G2

4.76 mm A3 B3 C3 D3 E3 F3 G3 H3

Please perform the multi-point calibration according to the above table and select the corresponding steel ball
to measure the sample within the corresponding measuring range as below table. Please note that the accuracy
will not be ensured if the measurement is out of measuring range as below table. (Caution: the accuracy is
only basing on the correct method of the multi-point calibration. Otherwise, the accuracy may not be
ensured. Please contact us for advice if there is any doubt of the multi-point calibration process.)

AT2E www.at2e.com

Recommended measuring range after Accuracy of multi-point

Steel ball dia.
multi-point calibration calibration

0.187" (4.76 mm) 0.00 – 6.00 mm 1% ±0.003 mm

0.125" (3.18 mm) 0.00 – 4.00 mm 2% ±0.003 mm

0.063" (1.59 mm) 0.00 – 2.00 mm 3% ±0.003 mm

The calibration data is saved in the system, only when the Multi-Point calibration is performed will the data of

A-H be re-written to the table. Referring to the table data, system will detect the strength of magnetism and

convert to the corresponding thickness value.

Therefore, when performing the Multi-Point calibration, it MUST be very careful. If there is any mistake

during the process, it will cause the data error to the table and finally lead to the inaccurate measurement.

Generally, the above data table will be used when performing the single-point calibration. Performing the

multi-point calibration is attended to modify the data of the above table. If the measurement is accurate in the

Single-Point calibration mode, there is no need to perform the Multi-Point calibration. Unless there is a large

deviation occurred in the Single-Point calibration mode, it is necessary to perform the Multi-Point calibration

for rebuilding the table data.

In addition, the Multi-Point calibration to every type of steel ball is independent from each other. That means

when calibrating the 4.76 mm steel ball, it will only rewrite the A3, B3, C3, D3, E3, F3, G3, H3 data, while the

data of 3.18 mm and 1.59 mm steel balls will not be changed.

When finishing a Multi-Point calibration, user can use the standard block gauges to perform a comparison test

to check whether the calibration data has been well set.

More standard block gauges could be ordered to build up a more accurate linear section, such as: 1.500 mm,

2.500 mm, 3.500 mm, 4.500 mm, 5.500 mm standard block gauges. With these additional standard block

gauges, the multi-point calibration shall be carried out from the thin standard block gauge to the thick ones.

For example, when performing the multi-point calibration with 4.76 mm magnetic steel ball, please use the

standard block gauges as the following sequence: 0.230 mm, 0.500 mm, 1.000 mm, 1.500 mm, 2.000 mm,

2.500 mm, 3.000 mm, 3.500 mm, 4.000 mm, 4.500 mm, 5.000 mm, 5.500 mm. Including the 0.000 mm data,

the maximum data which will be written into the data table is 13.

13. Communication setting

AMTG-2 has the data output function. Press “SEND” button to send out the data to PC or data collection

device, its communication protocol is as below:

1) Baud rate: 9600

2) Data bit: 8

3) Check bit: none

4) Stop bit: 1

14. Maintenance
1) The instrument is using the magnetic sensing as measuring medium, so the storing and operating

environment of the instrument has a strict requirement for the magnetism. In avoiding the interference,

the instrument cannot store or operate in the environment that has strong magnetism, or in the place that

has the possibility to create electromagnetic effect, like the nearby of large motor, magnet, loudspeaker

and other instruments that with magnetism.

2) Probe operation. The probe tip is very important component, during the daily measure, please do not drag

the sample fiercely when it contacting with the probe tip, in case of the sample scratches on the tip. When

moving the samples, the better way is to lift up the object, then move to the target position, so that to

reduce the friction on the tip and extend its service life.

3) Inside the mainframe, there is a built-in rechargeable lithium battery, please ensure there is sufficient

battery power to support the instrument during the daily operation. Generally, it is suggested that to use

the battery when measuring, after the measure is done, connect the charger to recharge the battery. By this

means, it is able to avoid the interference from unstable external electric source, so that avoid the

interference to the measures. If the instrument is not using for a long time, it is recommended that to

switch on the instrument for a least half an hour each month, and recharge the battery appropriately to

activate it, in avoiding the battery failure due to the long time storing.

4) The instrument is not designed to water proof. Please keep the instrument away from water source when

operating or storing to avoid any damage caused by water.
