EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Internet Marketing in its simplest terms refers to the marketing and selling of goods
and services using the Internet as the sales and distribution medium. What started as a cottage
industry in the early nineties has mushroomed into a global multibillion-dollar industry that
has been embraced by industrial giants such as Microsoft and General Electric. The Internet
has reduced the world into a global village, has made distance irrelevant and time zones little
more than an inconvenience. Businesses in the remote parts of India can easily service clients
in the bright cities of America, while goods produced in China are sold to consumers in all
parts of the world this study covered most of the respondents comes under male categories
and most them purchases offer time purchases decision making is his own decision and most
of the respondents feel to durability of product purchased and after ordering product delivery
is feel to very quickly after that service also better service provider to sellers and there is very
low level categories respondents only getting a duplications product and un less quality of
product and customers service related issues.
Internet marketing involves the usage of the Internet to market and sell goods or services. In
this thesis I wished to seek answers for the following questions with the help of secondary
data obtained from the News Papers, Business Magazines, Online articles along with web,
email surveys and e-questionnaires taking into consideration consumer perspective, and see if
they are moved by the internet marketing done by the companies or not, and if they are then
up to what extent. The survey results helped me in predicting the trends in Internet marketing.
Internet Marketing in its simplest terms refers to the marketing and selling of goods

industry in the early nineties has mushroomed into a global multibillion-dollar industry that

has reduced the world into a global village, has made distance irrelevant and time zones little
more than an inconvenience. Businesses in the remote parts of India can easily service clients
in the bright cities of America, while goods produced in China are sold to consumers in all
parts o f the world. The Internet has made all this possible and made Internet Marketing a
reality. Internet Marketing offers anybody over a certain age with access to a computer and
access to an Internet connection, the opportunity to go into business for themselves with little
or no start-up costs. There are two main ways to conduct business over the Internet. You

Page | 6
could either sell your own products and services, in which case you will be doing business as
a merchant. Many people though, have neither the time nor resources to create and offer their
own products or services. Fortunately for this large group of people they can still earn
significant sums of money as affiliates. Affiliates are Internet Marketers who are actually
middlemen or women. They will typically have a website of their own, and on this website
they will promote or review a product or service that is provided by a third party (the
merchant). Affiliates earn money by joining the affiliate programs of merchants, and earn
commissions when visitors t o their websites go to the merchant’s website by clicking on
either a textual or graphical link strategically placed on the affiliate’s website. In the brick
and mortar world, businesses only make profits when they make sale they only make sales
when they have customers and clients… which they only get when they have prospects. It all
starts with prospects. It is the same with Internet Marketing.

Statement of the problem

The study on current trends in internet marketing towards online purchasing is aimed t
o know how the customer are, what they want, how they use and react to the product. This
study also helps to know how various internet marketing variables such as price, product
features, advertising messages and corporate image affect the buyer. The study on internet
marketing reveals to the management about the taste, preference and choice of different
people and so on.
This study will help to gain knowledge about the online shopping. In this context, the
researcher felt that it is suitable to study the market condition of internet marketing and
online purchase. This study will help to gain knowledge on issues such as the primary factors
influencing online shopping, buying opinion and ideas of customers about the internet
marketing.

Scope of the study

This study aims in assessing the internet marketing towards online shopping. This study also
covers the customer’s opinion about the online shopping in India. A cut- threat is existing in
market to complete one product to another product. In this juncture an attempt was made to
study the role of current trends in online marketing to fulfill the needs and wants of the
customers’ and to what extent the products is concentrating on quality, quantity, price, level
of satisfaction, problem faced by the customers.

INTRODUCTION OF THE TOPIC
Internet marketing utilizes the power of electronic commerce to sell and market products.
Electronic commerce refers to any market on the internet. E-commerce supports selling,
buying, and trading of products or services over the internet. Internet marketing forms a
subset of electronic commerce. With the outburst of internet growth, internet marketing has
started becoming very popular. It is said that Internet marketing first began in the beginning
of 1990 with just text-based websites which offered product information. With growth in
internet, it is not just selling products alone, but in addition to this, information about
products, advertising space, software programs, auctions, stock trading and matchmaking. A
few companies have revolutionized the way, internet can be used for marketing, such as
Google.com, Yahoo.com, Amazon.com, Alibaba.com and Youtube.com.
Flipkart is a private company founded by Binny Bansal and Sachin Bansal. Established in the
year 2007, it deals with e-commerce. The company website is one of the most popular
websites in India and has an employee count of more than ten thousand. Its slogan, ‘The
Online Megastore’ is very apt and popular. As Indian’s are being accustomed to online
purchases, they have contributed towards the success of this online website. Flipkart is no
longer just a shopping website; it has become the heart and soul of the shopaholics.

People have started feeling that this online portal is giving more choices in products than
others. In a recent development, the Indian Textile Ministry has signed with Flipkart a
memorandum of understanding. Under this MOU, the handloom weavers will get an easy to
use platform through Flipkart to display their products and conduct sales. Flipkart will also
provide infrastructural support to the weavers. However, this move has been made for the
growth of handloom industry but it will also benefit the website. To associate with any
government project is in itself a testimony to their reputation.

PLACE IN THE MARKETING MIX OF FLIPKART

Flipkart functions entirely in India and it has its headquarters in the Garden City of Bangalore
in Karnataka. It is owned by a Singapore based company and is registered over there.
According to India’s foreign policy, a foreign company is not allowed e- retailing over here.
Therefore, in India, Flipkart sells the merchandises through an Indian company WS Retail.
Flipkart also provides its own platform to other companies who are interested in selling
their goods. The website is very easy and hassle free. Browsing, keeping track of products,

Page | 9
getting reviews, ordering goods and payment methods are very convenient for the
individuals.

At first Flipkart started its operations on the consignment model in which they personally
bought the book and couriered it. Later they opened many warehouses where the goods were
stored safely. The first warehouse was opened in Bangalore and later in Delhi, Mumbai,
Chennai, Hyderabad, Pune, Noida and Kolkata. As of today, more than five hundred
suppliers are working for Flipkart. At least 80% of the orders placed are handled and
controlled via warehouses. Shipping companies and courier companies are the real mediators
in this setup. The quick and well-organized service is the reason why the company has been
able to put its mark on the Indian market. Their delivery network is spread over thirty-seven
cities with delivery being possible in any nook and corner.

PRODUCT IN THE MARKETING MIX OF FLIPKART

Flipkart is an online retailing industry and started its operations with the sale of books. For
two years, it sold only books through its website as the management and shipment of books
was much easier. After its expansion, it started dealing with products like air coolers,
Washing machines, air conditioner, life style products, stationary supplies, cell phones,
computers, calculators, microwave ovens, water purifiers, laptops, cameras, audio players,
products relating to health care, dishwashers and e-books. Products sold on Flipkart have the
same warranties of the brand if sold outside in a showroom.

It has recently launched its personal product range called “DigiFlip”. Under this brand, it
offers products like computer accessories, camera bags, headphones and pen drives. In July,
Flipkart introduced its own tablet phones and networking router under its personal range
“DigiFlip”.

On February 5, 2014 in a special tie up with Motorola Mobility, Flipkart has provided a
platform for the launch of ‘Moto G’. Online shoppers went crazy with the unveiling of this
smart phone. This awe-inspiring response resulted in the sales of nearly 20,000 mobiles in a
few hours. Continuing their association,‘Moto X’, an Android smartphone, was introduced on
March 19.

On May 13,‘Moto E’was launched at the same site triggering the same response.  Continuing
this success story Flipkart in a tie up with Xiaomi Techintroduced ‘Xiaomi Mi3’ on its
platform. In the first phase on22nd July all the phones were sold in just 39 minutes and in the
2nd phase on 29thJuly the sold out was complete in only 5 seconds. On 5 th August the sale was

Page | 10
completed in just 2 seconds. This amazing response and hyper mania has helped in giving
Flipkart an immense lift up.

PRICE IN THE MARKETING MIX OF FLIPKART

Though Flipkart started its venture with an investment of just INR 400,000, today its net
worth is nearly 1billion dollars as its sales are increasing day by day. It still earns revenue of
50% from selling books online.Electronic commerce has become a huge hit because of
Flipkart. Its price policy is very flexible because of online transactions. Amount to be charged
is determined after looking at the innumerable expenses like transport expenses, supplier
expenses, packaging costs, courier charges, shipping cost, office expenses, maintenance
expenses, discount allowances, depreciation, taxes, advertisement expenses and many other
expenses.

Discounts up to 35% are allowed periodically to boost up the sales and maintain competitive
prices. For payments, Flipkart allows credit card transactions, cash payment after delivery,
transaction through debit card, by swiping card on delivery, vouchers available as e-gift and
net banking.

PROMOTIONS IN THE MARKETING MIX OF FLIPKART

Flipkart has changed the concept of multi brand retailing of products through internet in
India. Its huge success has proved to be an inspiration for other companies. It operates mostly
through mouth advertising. The satisfied customers have been their best promoters. To have a
firm grip on the online world Flipkart has used the services of Google Ad-words and SEO.
These marketing tools have made them household names. Downloading the exclusive app of
Flipkart helps in getting alerts about the current offers, order status, price drops, recent
launches and various gift coupons.

Flipkart has also taken the help of creative and interesting advertisements so that an
awareness and trust is generatedfor their website amongst the people. Their first campaign
was shown on TVC with the concept that books can be delivered with just a single click.
Recently an ad has been launchedto increase the social visibility where the tag line is “No
Kidding No Worries”. Trained individuals are hired to fulfill their responsibilities adequately.
The systematic planning and level of effort undertaken to reach such heights is commendable.

HISTORY

Flipkart was founded on 2007 by Sachin Bansal and Binny Bansal , both alumni of the Indian
Institute of Technology Delhi. They worked for Amazon.com, and left to create their new
company incorporated in October 2007 as Flipkart Online Services Pvt. Ltd. [9] The first

downloads did not get popular in India due to the advent of free music streaming sites.

After the success of its 2014 Big Billion Sale, Flipkart carried out a second Big Billion Sale.

where it is reported that they saw a business turnover of $300 million in gross

operating through a complex business structure which included nine firms, some registered in
Singapore and some in India. In 2012 Flipkart co-founders sold WS Retail to a consortium of
investors led by Rajeev Kuchhal.

Page | 14
CRITICISM
On 13 September 2014, a Flipkart delivery boy allegedly molested a house maid in
Hyderabad. The house maid's employer has been fighting against Flipkart for justice on this
issue, and also for making offline delivery services safe.
On 6 October 2014 Flipkart launched a promotion called 'Big Billion Day' with the intention
to increase the popularity of their website by targeting a billion sales in 1 day. This, even
though Flipkart achieved the target, led to public outcry and widespread criticism among
consumers, competitors and partners, heavily damaging its reputation. Many users could not
place orders because of high server load and errors which led to frustration among
customers. Many users who placed orders received emails stating that their orders were
cancelled. Most of the products were sold for less than their cost, and Flipkart was accused of
anti-competitive behavior. Major competitors filed complaints against Flipkart with the
commerce ministry, claiming that selling products lower than cost is against the commerce
policy of the country. The Ministry said that they would formulate new trade rules for
electronic retail after this incident.
Flipkart was criticized on the subject of net neutrality after their announced partnership with
Airtel to use the Airtel Zero platform which would have made the Flipkart app free for Airtel
Users. On 14 April 2015 Flipkart retracted its decision to use Airtel Zero platform.
Sellers on Flipkart have been facing several challenges while doing their business on its
marketplace portal, to the extent that some of them had to quit the portal. Some of these
challenges include its unfair policies for sellers, lack of a competent logistics service and
customer returns that are purely as a result of consumer fraud.

INTRODUCTION OF TOPIC

The early existence of online shopping started in the early 1990's when text-based and simple
websites were predominantly used in offering product or service information around the
world. The Bristol-Myers Squibb was the first company that officially launched an online
shopping campaign. A US-based drug company, the BristolMyers Squibb launched the use of
online shopping to basically develop the public awareness in using a certain drug called
"Excedrin". During the tax season in 1997, law and marketing firms declared the Excedrin as

Page | 16
a "Tax Headache" supplement from online advertising websites. Bristol-Myers provided an
online free sample of the drug to American internet users. According to Linda Himelstein of
Business Week, the use of the World Wide Web in promoting Excedrin resulted to series of
good responses coming from Bristol-Myers. Himelstein also wrote in her article that in just
one or two days, the Brtistol-Myers already estimated 30,000 added names in their online
customer list. Standardized technology industries such as Microsoft and IBM began to
incorporate their internet providers and several software programs in the Bristol-Myer's
existing online shopping campaigns. Both industries
also began throwing away millions of dollars from online shopping efforts to give way for the
Bristol-Myer's campaign. Several websites such as Yahoo is said to be one of the online-
based firms that was able to quickly acquire high amount of profit from online shopping.
Yahoo successfully targ eted the "never before seen" type of messages from the online
shopping industry. The highly trafficked website generated the monitoring of hits every
online advertisement acquires per day. In 2000, many online shopping firms were forced by
Yahoo to tighten their online advertising revenue. During the same year, Yahoo reported that
the online shopping firms' customer bases dwindled during the "Cooling Stage" of the US
economy. The expenses used for online shopping in the US, Canada and other neighboring
countries totaled to 300 Billion Dollars in 1996. In 1994, the average online shopping figure
totaled to 175 Billion Dollars which were all spent for traditional advertising campaigns in
one year. The online shopping industry began to rise when the number of internet users and
home based businessmen or entrepreneurs continued to increase in America during the mid-
1990's. In the year 1997, the online advertising industry's budget increased to $1 billion.
Online shopping expertise and advertisement writer Bill McRea wrote in his article that one
of the most popular online shopping firms in America and some European countries today is
the "Houston Online Marketing". According to McRea, the Houston online shopping has
several advantages that comprises well with affiliated online shopping firms in the US
including several western and European countries as well. The benefits of Houston online
shopping provided.

Cricket stats record the fastest hundred, fastest fifty and every time the record is bro ken, it is
prominently recorded. But the fastest growing companies have no record-keeping body or an
award-giving organization to show that they have grown faster than others. Media keeps
talking about them when they make news but it’s more like flirting rather than a solid
relationship.
Myntra
Established by Mukesh Bansal along with Ashutosh Lawania and Vineet Saxena, Myntra was
in the business of on - demand personalization of gift items. It mainly operated on the B2B
(business to business) model during it s initial years. Between 2007 and 2010, the online

calendars, watches, teddy bears, pendants, wine glasses and jigsaw puzzles.

Each a global market. Online marketing also lets your business reach customers around the
world. Because your business isn’t limited to a particular geographic location, you can reach
a much wider target audience and have a higher chance of success.
Reach your target market easily. Online marketing can also help you reach your target
market immediately and potential customers will be able to find you with a quick search.
Convenient payment collections. With e-commerce enabled on your website, you’ll also be
able to collect payment easily and conveniently.

Affiliate marketing. You can earn passive income from affiliate marketing combined with
your Internet marketing.
DISADVANTAGES OF ONLINE MARKETING
No instant trust. Because online advertising is everywhere, there is no way for potential
customers to tell if the marketing is good or bad. It can take some time for a business
marketing online to gain the trust of users.
Competition. One of the biggest downsides to online marketing is the stiff competition. It
can be very difficult to make your business and information stand out with companies around
the world competing.
Skill and knowledge required. Online marketing today also requires a great deal of
knowledge and skill to be successful.
Many businesses find it helpful to consult with or hire an advertising firm or design company
to help them with their marketing strategy.
Because online marketing comes with so much competition, it’s worth a second thought
before you jump in and try to market your own business online.
Internet marketing offers so many benefits when done properly and helps you connect with a
broader customer base.
Avoid wasting your time and money and consider a web design and marketing company to
help you stand out and see better sales.

SUGGESTION & RECOMMENDATIONS
1) This survey suggests that book is the most popular item on the Internet and
Flights/Holidays is the second popular item. Online shopping basically provides the
way consumers go shopping and purchase services and goods with reasonable price
on the Internet. For some consumers, shopping and purchasing online have become
part of their daily lives, while others may not even care about it.
2) Search discount sites like Overstock.com for the item you want before buying it
elsewhere. These retailers purchase excess items that manufacturers couldn't unload
on other retailers at a discount and generally pass the savings onto customers. Don't
be afraid of purchasing refurbished items either -- this is often just another word for
surplus inventory source.
3) It's a reasonable requirement, but some restocking fees are easier to swallow than
others. While some retailers charge up to 25 percent or more, a fee of 15 percent of
the price you paid for the returned item has become customary for intensively
packaged products, like electronics. Before proceeding to checkout, familiarize
yourself with the retailer's return policies, which should be explicitly stated
somewhere on its Web site.
4) Most credit card companies now offer single-use credit card numbers for online
shopping. These expire after one purchase and only your credit card company knows
which account it's linked to. Some Web browsers now have larger certificate windows
that are easier to read and that allow users to examine site information more carefully.
If you can't catch a break on shipping, ordering early enough will allow you to opt for
standard shipping. It's almost always the slowest, but if you order early, you've got time on
your side. Give yourself a little more time if you're ordering from a third-party vendor
through a big online retailer. The retail site's delivery date is an estimate, one the vendor
doesn't always meet.

marketing but consumers did not agree to this view.
Companies and consumers agree that awareness of internet marketing trends is mandatory for
internet marketing trends. Also it is vastly accepted that that internet marketing will surely
